They sailors watched him go quietly and then turned to look at Chase and Perry with curious eyes.

"The match is forfeit," Perry said after a moment of tense silence. "Where's the purser on this ship?"

"Up for'rard. I'll take you, if you want," Oxley offered, once it was clear that the midshipman was leaving them to get on with things.

"Thankya, lad!" Perry said, recognizing the drummer he had seen earlier. He rubbed at his cheek and gave Chase an honest grin before turning to follow the young marine.

"I'm sorry if I said anythin' I shouldn't've done, earlier," Oxley said. "Me brother was pressed, see. An' I keep hopin' that mebbe I'll find him one day, though he could be near enough anywheres by now."

Perry was surprised by the young man's sincerity, but he gave him an appreciative thump on the shoulder. "Never mind, lad! He's probably got rich off the prizes, and he'll send for you as soon as he's built you a mansion."

Oxley sighed, though he smiled at the older man's words. "Dunno. I'm savin' up me own prize money. Though I daren't go home with it - Dad'll give me a right leatherin' for runnin' off, an' I won't see so much as a brass farthin' of it ever again."

He led the way for'rard, to the purser's cabin, where he knocked on the door.

Perry chose not to make a reply. He planned to send his own money back to Madalena, but that was no one's business but his own.

Oxley glanced over to him and shrugged. It wasn't his business if he didn't want to say anything, after all. He tapped on the door again, and eventually the purser opened it and peered out.

"What d'you want?" he said.

Oxley indicated Perry. "He's jus' come aboard an' needs his stuff issuin'. Sir," he said.

The purser disappeared back into his cabin, reappearing a moment later with the key to his storeroom.

"This way, then. Full kit, I take it?"

Perry looked a bit resentful at that. It wouldn't have had to be full kit if he'd been allowed to bring some of his own things. "Aye," he grumbled reluctantly.

The purser put the key into the lock of his storeroom and turned it. "Right. Two shirts, trousers, a jacket. Shoes. Hammock. Belt - and knife."

He scribbled for a moment in his book before turning around and indicating a blank space. "Make your mark there, then," he said, offering the quill.

"Bounty? It comes out your pay, not the bounty. Ain't everyone who gets the bounty, after all. Are you goin' to make your mark here then, show you've got your things?"

"All right, all right!" Perry answered, feeling slightly mollified. He signed his name neatly and looked at the pen. "Mind if I borrow this here a while, mate?"

He glanced down at the neat signature and shrugged. "Just so long as you remember to return it when you've finished."

Finally. "Thanks very much," Perry responded, grinning and collecting his pile of new things. "And thank you too, drummer boy. What's your name again?"

"Oxley. Tom Oxley. What's yourn?" he said, glancing at the pile of things in the older man's arms.

"Paul Perry," he answered. "And now, if those lads ain't stole my paper or spilled the ink all over the cat, I'm gonna go write that note to my wife."
