Re: Midshipman Fletcher Goes Up In The World
"'E ain't likely to leather you," Terry said. "Not wiv you bein' the gunner's boy, I mean. Won't stop 'im doin' it to me, though." Anyway, Fingers was younger than Terry, and smaller, and he couldn't see the purser hurting the other boy - even Mister Foxley couldn't be that mean.
Re: Midshipman Fletcher Goes Up In The World
He puffed out his chest as best he could. "Won't let'm."
Re: Midshipman Fletcher Goes Up In The World
"You's a good mate, Fingers," he said, though he doubted the purser would take any notice of the other boy.
Re: Midshipman Fletcher Goes Up In The World
The praise made him fairly beam. "Gotta have 'un, facin' a terrer like the pusser," Fingers reasoned as he pattered down the ladder.
Re: Midshipman Fletcher Goes Up In The World
"Yeah," Terry said, though he was dragging his feet a little, wanting to delay having to face the purser for as long as possible .
Re: Midshipman Fletcher Goes Up In The World
Despite Button's obvious reluctance, Fingers saw little need for concern. Why should there be any worry?
Re: Midshipman Fletcher Goes Up In The World
It was all very well for Fingers, in Terry's considered opinion. He wasn't going to get leathered with the purser's tawse.
Re: Midshipman Fletcher Goes Up In The World
"Mebbe he won't have no work," Fingers offered hopefully.
Re: Midshipman Fletcher Goes Up In The World
"Maybe. What you wanna bet 'e won't send us to the cook or someone?" Terry was feeling unusually gloomy right now. Bother it. If they hadn't gone up the mizzenmast and helped Mister Fletcher, they wouldn't be in this situation now.
Re: Midshipman Fletcher Goes Up In The World
"Cou'd ask Mister Hennock mebbe." Even though he was already supposed to be working in the magazine.
Re: Midshipman Fletcher Goes Up In The World
"Mebbe." Hopefully he'd be better to work for than Mister Foxley. "Reckon Mister Leat'll check to see we went to the pusser, though, drattit."
Re: Midshipman Fletcher Goes Up In The World
"'Sides, it's me he'll whip, not you - he don't know you've bin skivin'. Mister Foxley, I mean. Likely 'e won't care, neither."
They were on the messdeck now, and it was only another ladder and a short walk before they arrived at the purser's store-room. Terry's steps were definitely dragging now.

Re: Midshipman Fletcher Goes Up In The World
"But we waz helpin' a officer," Fingers pointed out. It wasn't much, but it was better than nothing.
Re: Midshipman Fletcher Goes Up In The World
True... But Mister Foxley hardly likely to care about that. "Yeah... but not alla the time," Terry pointed out. And they were here now, anyway. He took a breath.
Re: Midshipman Fletcher Goes Up In The World
Fingers made a face. "Close 'nuff." He swallowed, suddenly nervous, and glanced up at Button.
"Can't be so bad, really?"
"Can't be so bad, really?"
Re: Midshipman Fletcher Goes Up In The World
"You don't know 'im," Terry muttered in reply. It probably wasn't that bad, really, but it did hurt... and he wasn't sure if Fingers knew about it, not really.
Re: Midshipman Fletcher Goes Up In The World
That was true, too. He set his shoulders and tried to make himself appear taller. "Let's go, then."
Re: Midshipman Fletcher Goes Up In The World
Terry took a breath and pushed the door open, steeling himself for whatever Mister Foxley was going to say - or do.
Re: Midshipman Fletcher Goes Up In The World
The purser squinted down his nose at the two boys. "What is this?"
"Mister Leat sen'us." Fingers peered warily at him.

Re: Midshipman Fletcher Goes Up In The World
Terry nodded silently, just as wary, and hopeful that things wouldn't be as bad usual because Fingers was there. Though it was doubtful that Mister Foxley would even care about that.
Re: Midshipman Fletcher Goes Up In The World
"Did he, now." Mister Foxley sniffed. "Well. Nicely timed. There's a lot to do. Fortunately I've two able boys around to put to work!"
Re: Midshipman Fletcher Goes Up In The World
Terry brightened a little. Maybe... Just maybe, the purser hadn't remembered that he'd bunked off.
Re: Midshipman Fletcher Goes Up In The World
That didn't sound so bad, Fingers thought.
"You," the purser went on, rounding on Button. "Haven't I warned you about skivin' off?"
Or maybe it did. Fingers stared up at Mister Foxley with wide eyes.

Re: Midshipman Fletcher Goes Up In The World
Terry automatically put both hands behind his back - as if that was going to help! and shuffled his feet. He nodded wordlessly, staring at the deck. "Y... yes, Mister Foxley," he mumbled, hoping this wasn't going to be too bad.
