14 April 1809
Dear Mum and Annie,
I am serving on His Majesty's Ship Terpsichore, and we are sailing to Lisbon, which is in Portugal. I miss you and hope you are both in good health. It is a friend who is writing this for me, and I hope you can find someone to read it for you.
Since I last saw you, I have served aboard Calypso, Surprise, Mistral and Berry. I have a good Captain and some real good mates. I hope I see you both soon. Take care, and I miss you.
The ships I was in took several prizes and so I have some prize money saved up, and if anything happens to me, it will be sent to you. It's enough for you to not worry for several years, I think.
I will try to write again soon.
