Concern touched Leveque's face as he dropped onto a seat. "I am sorry to hear it." At the final comment, however, he looked pained. "I only wish that were possible, sir. But I suspect they -- forgive me, I should not presume to speak for your subordinate -- I suspect my principal is too--" Stupid. "--stubborn for that."

Sourette shrugged fatalistically.

"It was a faint hope. Mine will not draw back, and is even reluctant to accept an apology, should it be offered. He has the added inducement of having come under a second's flag of truce and being at a disadvantage due to his injuries."

He tipped the bottle towards Leveque.

"So it remains for us to settle the details of the engagement. We will leave the choices to you, but it would be best, I think, if the matter was resolved speedily then."

Leveque opened his mouth, then closed it again, resisting the impulse to pinch the bridge of his nose. He had not come here to argue. The grievances the captain listed were legitimate ones, but declaring Jarreau's own would be fundamentally pointless; it was over and done.

"No," he said in response to the offered wine, "Thank you, sir."

"Pistols, I think. Tomorrow morning, if possible, after..." he trailed off, realizing that there might not be an 'after'. He forced a smile, "Your hope may still be realized, sir; though not, perhaps, in a manner either of us would have wished. However, as Monsieur St-Hilaire's insult was received second, I suspect it makes sense for him to receive satisfaction in the same order? Unless you or he have any objections to either of these terms?"

The captain coloured slightly. He had had no right to speak like that as a second to his opposite. He was there to make peace, if possible, not drive the severity of the insult home and make the other uncomfortable.

He sighed tiredly.

"That was uncalled for. Forgive me. Of course my principal will fight second, and tomorrow morning will suit splendidly. Which side should provide the weapons? I have a pair of good duelling pistols here, if you care to see them and assure yourself of their suitability."

"I should be very grateful to you, sir, for their use, if you are willing. And as to their suitability," he added earnestly, "I have no doubts on that account."

With some measure of awkwardness, he rose. "I should take my leave. You must have quite enough to do as it is. And it will, I think, be a long night."

Sourette used his desk as a prop to get to his own feet.

"I will see you tomorrow then, M. Leveque. Good night."
