How to get money

I ran into a practical question:

Torry's last little shopping trip to the horse fair has cost he nearly all the money he has with him. So now he needs to refill his purse.

He has plenty of money in England and banking arrangements in Lisbon and Porto, and employs the services of two men of business there, who have the legal power to withdraw money from his accounts. So the money is there. But: How does it get to him? Does he have to wait till he can go himself and has to write IOUs till then? Can it be send by post or courier without too much danger of being stolen? Has the army some kind of arrangement for this?

My research turned up nothing, so if anybody has any idea, please advise!

As far as I'm aware, the army lived 'on tick' - on credit - most of the time. Torry can write IOUs, or drafts on his bank (I guess like cheques) which will get paid when they're presented to his bank by whoemever.

I believe.

I had Vickery write home for a draft to honour a note of hand - an IOU - when he bought a horse. (Well, via letter, later on in 1809.)

Hmmm, don't think gipsies take bank drafts, so he needs real money.

I feel like I've read that the French cantinières acted as money lenders (at extortionate rates of interest of course), but I could be wrong. I'm pretty sure they acted as bankers to keep soldiers' money safe for them, so they probably loaned it out to others as well. (outis, does that sound right?). If so, maybe there are sutlers in the British army who do likewise. I can't really see Maggie solely accepting notes saying that she'll get paid once they get back to England. She needs ready money to buy produce from the locals anyway. Plus, aren't there times when wagons of the pay chests come through and have to be protected?
