Patrols and the vanguard
Having given 'orders' for various units to head off on assignment, I figure it's useful to have a separate plotting thread for possible adventures/misadventures to happen while everybody's off doing stuff.
If the KGL is willing, a certain Captain Blackwood may visit to iron out details with regard to the two separate missions and how they might support each other.

Re: Patrols and the vanguard
*bump*
The combined patrol of Guardsmen and Riflemen having stumbled across a group of cavalry suggests the French rearguard may be closer than anticipated. It may, therefore, be reasonable to expect a rise in skirmishing between vanguard and rearguard, or even an outright pitched battle between the two armies.
This could fulfill the 'requirement' for an event that turns the British back toward Oporto?

A more involved one, at least. The exchange of fire between the patrol and the cavalrymen could be the spark that leads to just such a thing, even.

Re: Patrols and the vanguard
Right. So. Should the French cavalry chase the patrol back toward the army, and thereby stir up something of a fight, or should they raise the alarm and bring a more sizable force up to pursue?

Re: Patrols and the vanguard
I've got a question. Well, several. First being, when should we return the 60th trio, back to the working army, and out of the back, and whether they would have done so before the skirmish/fighting is to send the English back, direction Oporto? Ie. that they could participate in in the fighting?
Second: Would they, when on the backing towards Oporto, have any time or orders to continue scouting, in the direction of the following French/different direction or shall they be only retreating?
Fight: I think the cavalry could chase the scouts to the army, and perhaps realise that according to the size it's best to alert their own French which should come in force after them?

Re: Patrols and the vanguard
Vickery can always send a sergeant out to see if things are OK, with orders to bring them back if things aren't going too well - which is probably justified seeing as they've already been in trouble with the provosts once. Which would get the three of them back to the Company in time for any encounter with the French.
If you think that would work, that is?

Re: Patrols and the vanguard
(*curse* .. clicked on the wrong post reply square) .. Ok, as I said before, if you consider it (though Vickery will not know yet) They have been in trouble twice. Second time, when Newbury was bothered, chick attacked, and well basically they were promised more to come later. But Vickery would be able to consider it a high probability that if they had gotten in trouble with the provosts once, the provosts might want to coax them into trouble again, and thus give an order to have them where he can see them considerably better - and certainly away from temptation.
Still wondering on the second question though. If any light could be shed on that? (and now.. off to do work x.x)

Re: Patrols and the vanguard
I can see Vickery, having had time to think on it, decide to recall Cotton and Pye, at least. Newbury still isn't quite fit to return to his duties, which will probably mean he's left behind - unless the sergeant Vickery sends tells him otherwise. ( )
As to the fighting itself - who (as in, which characters) want in on that?

Re: Patrols and the vanguard
So long as the action doesn't happen too quickly in real time, I'm perfectly willing to drag all my riflemen in, though if posting gets to be too fast, I may drop down to two or even one character - or post all action under one account, which might end up being a little confusing, if I start posting Sharpe's POV from Cotton's or Vickery's accounts. I don't mind posting both Cotton and Vickery from either of those accounts quite so much, though.
Re: Patrols and the vanguard
It shouldn't do, but there's no harm in inserting delays (in real time) if posting gets going too quickly.
Re: Patrols and the vanguard
No, no. I was asking that, when on retreat.. will they be straying any from the army at all, or keep tight on their heel (any scouting at that time?). And i'm up for either delays, or whatnot, if needed. Or of course, to post under one account, with diffy characters, with their names mentioned only or such!
Re: Patrols and the vanguard
Out of curiosity, is there any new input on the outcome of the Clash of Arms thread? I know the original plan was to have it end with a French victory, but for my part... I'm not sure now about the feasibility of that result.
I dunno either how it should go during the actual fighting, really.
And stuff.
