Questions about the Muster List

Out of curiosity, why has Leat been put up as 'Ned' and not 'Edward'?

I can always change it to Edward if you'd prefer. I wasn't sure about which name to use, but figured that if you'd put him up as Edward 'Ned' Leat, it'd be like me putting up Thomas 'Tom' Oxley, where he gets known by the nickname more.

And Emily was always 'your' cat (seeing as she's adopted Leat who's your character). It didn't feel right for us to borrow her without you being here.

I would prefer it to be Edward, if that's alright with you. I put it up as he is happy to be known as that by his friends (should any of the senior officers ever feel inclined to call him Ned), but on an official document, such as the muster list, it seems more appropriate to call him Edward.

She would probably have become the Marines' cat, to be honest - cats change loyalties incredibly quickly.*g* It was sweet of you, though.

The Marines would be pleased to have her adopt them - they do need mothering, after all.

I prefer Nedward myself.

I have only just gotten started here, but in addition to my seaman, I was thinking of creating a surgeon character and I don't see one listed in the muster. Does anyone know if there is already a surgeon in Terpsy?

There used to be (James Farley) but I've more or less dropped him from my character load. Being that he was an older fellow and still very new to the Navy, perhaps he was transferred to a larger ship, thus creating a vacancy.

Or he suffered an accident or some other calamity which can be blamed on his advanced age.

Then I'll go ahead and work out the details on my surgeon and propose him if I know I won't be stepping on any toes (especially no toes that are already out on the horses as it were).

I highly doubt there'll be any stepping on toes. Surgeons seem to have come and gone from Terpsy with startlingly regularity in the past. Somehow the crew always seems to adapt.

And surgeon's mates even moreso. Maybe vampire Bolitho has a taste for surgeons. Their blood is probably healthier anyway.

I wouldn't count on it! If they're preparing blue pills and the like then they might have some high concentrations of mercury in their tissues, putting aside any other dangerous chemicals used in physic.

Maybe he likes the taste of mercurial blood? Anyway, considering the seamen who NEED to take the blue pills to treat whatever they've picked up in port, I'd probably go for a surgeon instead.

Well, I sincerely hope that the skipper leaves the exsanguination in the able hands of the surgeons (and possibly their leaches).

Eh, they'd use lancets, surely. Leeches are for lubbers, I say.

(Oh, maybe the salt water everywhere and men's salty skin is bad for them. That would explain why I haven't heard about leeches being used at sea. Or maybe they ARE used at sea and I just haven't read it yet.)

You're quite right, I'm pretty sure they were not employed widely at sea. I merely threw them in for humorous effect.

I didn't know leeches were catch and release.

Permits are required for catch and keep, sadly.

Nah - what you want is one of these to keep them in.
