Re: Day Trip
"Might be right, lets go in then? Well, wait for officers first ,so they find a seat, if we may go with them!" Pye smiled gazing curiously at the horseless carriage. An interesting thing, but will it move? Ah well, if it didn't they could all still march.
Re: Day Trip
"Here, Cob! What're you doin' up there, and is there any more room?" Oxley called, seeing the sailor scrambling up to the roof of the strangest carriage he'd ever seen in his life. "Here, you sure this's safe - there ain't no horses anywheres."
Re: Day Trip
Chase grinned. "Better view up here, ain't there? Like sittin' in the crosstrees. Course there's room! Mind you don't climb on them shiny things hangin' off the hull, though."
Re: Day Trip
"Been awhile since I were up aloft," Evans remarked and clambered onto the carriage's roof, using open windows to help him up. "There's even stays to clap onto! Ain't that summat."
Re: Day Trip
"Don't think you's s'posed to do that," Oxley said, tilting his hat back on his head to watch Mister Evans scramble up on the roof. "There's nice chairs inside, y'know, too."
Re: Day Trip
The two seamen glanced at each other and shrugged.
"Mebbe there is, but bein' up aloft's more fun than bein' belowdecks," Chase said.
Evans tugged his tarred hat down more firmly on his head. "Aye," he agreed with a teasing smirk. "You Marines and them others had better stay below."

Re: Day Trip
"Who says I can't come up there? Bein' aloft is much more fun, like you say," Oxley said, with a frown, looking up at them both.
Re: Day Trip
A grin made the corners of Chase's mouth twitch but he held his silence. Evans looked thoughtful and said, "S'pose if you're willin'. This here's the biggest fightin' top I ever seen."
Re: Day Trip
Oxley shrugged and clambered up to the roof, trying to mind his footing and not kick anything on the way. "Here, it is nice an' big up here," he said, looking around.
Re: Day Trip
"That is... interesting," Blackwood remarked, pausing just outside the uneven door to fit his hat on. He lifted an eyebrow at the three adventuresome men on the top of the carriage, not fully understanding the attraction to such a spot for passengers. Surely that was where the coachman sat?
Re: Day Trip
"Best pay that lot no mind, sir," Newbury said as he made his way cautiously toward the carriage. "There's no doin' anythin' with the Navy, sir."
Re: Day Trip
Chase stretched his white-clad legs out and fairly beamed. "Ain't it, though? Best place to be sittin', for goin' off to see ol' Victory. Can't get a better view of anythin', 'less yer up aloft."
Re: Day Trip
"I am not entirely convinced that riding on the top of the coach is either the safest or most comfortable place to travel," Vickery said, looking up at the two sailors and the young lad in the red jacket and Marines' hat who had clambered up to join them.
Re: Day Trip
Evans grinned cheerfully down at the greenjacket officer. "Ain't so safe or comfortable up in the tops either, sir, but there's lads that love bein' up there alla same."
Re: Day Trip
"What's all this racket for?" Tom Mayden complained, appearing from the general direction of the kitchen, tugging on his still-damp coat. "Can't a lad get - the bleedin' hell's that?"

Re: Day Trip
"We's goin' on a trip," Oxley called, waving at the other man in his damp and strangely-cut coat. "You can come up aloft with us, or sit inside. Goin' to see ol' Vic'try."
Re: Day Trip
"Victory? Oh, I heared of her. She was one of the line at Ushant. What's she doin' in port?" Mayden frowned, then blanched when he took note of the officers. He saluted hastily and was embarrassed by the slightly dishevelled state of his uniform. "Beg pardon, sirs."

Re: Day Trip
"Ushant?" What the heck was Ushant - apart from being where ships aimed for to head out to the Atlantic, anyhow. "She broke the line at Trafalgar, I know that. You should ask Brannin' 'bout that - he was there!" The admiration in Oxley's voice was clear.
Re: Day Trip
Something like confusion flitted across Mayden's face. "The bleedin' hell's Trafalgar?" He demanded. "The scrap at Ushant happened in 'Seventy-nine. How d'you not know 'bout that?"
He shook his head, despairing of the lad who professed to be a Marine. "An'... who? I know a Brannin'... Sarn't Brannin' anyways."
What mad sort of place was this?

Re: Day Trip
Oxley gaped. Who didn't know about Trafalgar, the most famous sea-battle ever in the whole history of the Navy?
"Was a big battle, us ag'in the Frogs, that we won, 'bout four year ago," he managed to say once he'd recovered his composure a bit. "Where've you bin?"

Re: Day Trip
What? "There's been lots of battles 'tween us an' the Frogs," Mayden replied testily. "I been in the West Indies since 'vacuatin' Boston. We've been chasin' them Frogs all over down there, so devil take yer Trafalgar."
"Mind your tongue, Private," Mister Cartwright said curtly, appearing from inside the Crown. "That goes for both of you."

Re: Day Trip
Fighting back a sigh, Blackwood took a step forward. This had gone on long enough. "That will do, indeed. You three may come down from there and board this vehicle properly. You, fellow, may go aboard quietly. Lively, now."
He glanced at the Marine officer and nodded slightly. "Are you to join us, sir?"

Re: Day Trip
Oxley opened his mouth to say something, but was forestalled by Mister Cartwright's appearance, and looked away shame-facedly. And then some other officer he didn't know came out to tell them to get down. Bother.
And it had been going to be such a good day.
And it had been going to be such a good day.
