"They ain't... they ain't burned proper black," Oxley said. "Anyways, I never said I was any good at cookin'. I'm a drummer, me, arter all." He shrugged and sucked his burned thumb again.

Evans poked at the bubbling surface of the pie. "Long's it ain't taste like whale fat, it's eatable," he said.

"Whale fat?" Mayden asked. "Thought that was only used for lanterns."

"Nope. Can be eaten too, but it don't go down easy."

"It's got cheese on it. An' stuff." Oxley looked critically at the burn on his thumb. "Hell. Anyone got a needle? I think it's goin' to blister. Bother it."

"Better get a sawbones for that," Mayden drawled, not troubling himself to glance over. " 'Less of course they made you lot surgeons too, whenever they gave you that high an' mighty royal title."

"It's hot!" Evans cried, fanning at his mouth even as he tried to chew the mouthful of pie he'd taken.

"'Course it's hot! I just took it out the oven and burned me thumb doin' it," Oxley said, rolling his eyes. "Anyhow, it ain't so big as all that. Don't reckon a sawbones'll want to be fussed over it. Hurts, though." He stuck it back in his mouth.

Oxley grinned at Mayden's comment. "They's all the same. Here, you want a bit?" He waved at the other pies cooling on the tray.

"I'll take a bit," Perry offered generously, drawn back into the crowded kitchen by the smells and sounds. "Say, were I hearin' things or did I hear a bit o' Yankee talk in here?" He looked at them all with open curiosity.

"When I'm done, prolly," Mayden answered, then looked up from his scrubbing. "Yankee? Aye, that'd be me. What 'bout it?"

"Just I'm a Yankee meself, but ain't no one'll believe it. You been pressed too?" He looked with skepticism at the man's uniform as he reached across to help himself to Evans' pizza.

"Me, prest?" Mayden scoffed. "I took the shillin' in Boston back in 'Seventy-four, when the troubles started gettin' hot. You don't sound like no Yankee I ever known, neither."

Meanwhile, Evans had solved the problem of the pie being too hot by dunking it in his tea.

Oxley caught sight of what Evans was doing and spluttered. "I'm sure you ain't s'posed to do that with it, mate," he said, and looked at his thumb. It looked very pink and angry but he'd been wrong about it forming a blister. Thankfully.

"Butter? You sure?" Oxley asked doubtfully, looking at his thumb again. He sneaked a piece of pizza with his uninjured hand.

"I what?" Evans asked, looking up upon hearing his name.

Mayden scraped soap suds off his coat facings and held the coat up. "Blubber, you daft idiot. He wants some."

"Don't, then," Oxley said, giving his hand a shake to see if that would help the pain at all. "What's that when it's at home, anyhow?"

"It's whale fat, lad," Perry answered, sidling up next to Mayden and stealing another slice of pizza. "Now why'd you go an' take the shilling? And you ain't that old to have joined up in '74. What are you on about?"

"It was either that or starve, 'cause of the siege. An' I sure weren't gonna join them rebels. Proper Loyalist, me," Mayden replied. "An' 'course I ain't old, it's only been six years gone since I 'listed. What year d'you think it is?"

Mayden stared at the seaman. "Siege of Boston. Thought you said you was a Yankee." He picked at a stubborn streak of mud on his coat's sleeve, but all such movement stopped abruptly at the statement of which year it was.

"Ain't so," he said disbelievingly. "That's near to thirty years off."

"Boston's been under siege? When?" Perry was rather alarmed at this news. "I been away these few years... Under siege by who?"
