Description: Tide Evans is sturdily built, with a seaman's typical lithe, confident gace. His slightly curly straw-coloured hair, when unbound, hangs below his shoulders, but he typically wears his hair back in a queue or covered with a head-scarf. Evans' brown eyes are keen and observant, able to judge wind and tide at a glance. His face has retained a certain boyishness, despite many years at sea.

In all things, Evans is efficient. He expects the best from his mates and from himself. Ever a consummate sailor, he takes no issue with lending a hand to help with any task when every man is needed. It's not uncommon for him to bend his back and heave at the braces in a gale, or volunteer to take an oar if a boat crew is needed.

Background: Evans' life at sea began in the merchant service. His first job aboard a ship was as captain's servant. He was eventually permitted work on deck and it was only a matter of time before he was working aloft. By the time he left the ship, he was well on his way to becoming a competent topman.

The Welshman shortly found employment aboard a whaler, where he served for the following three years. He became a mast captain during his time on the whaler and would have remained with the ship. had not the whaler wrecked in storm, within half a day's sail of Plymouth. Evans and a handful of his shipmates were barely able to escape in the cutter.

By pure unhappy chance, a press-gang was the first to find the shipless whalers after they staggered ashore. The bedraggled men were taken directly to the Melampus frigate, which was fitting out for a commission in the West Indies. Evans was to serve in a number of Navy ships after Melampus's return to England, eventually being rated quartermaster's mate aboard Fame.

After a brief spell on the beach, Evans volunteered to serve in Marlborough when he learned it was given to his old captain. He was with the seventy-four until he and several other seamen were sent to join a newly-launched frigate called Terpsichore, a transfer that brought with it the promotion to quartermaster.
