Re: Outside 95th's billet
"It was," Cadoux agreed. "They were still arguing about it when I left England ... Mainly blaming Moore, which is rich from gentlemen who wouldn't have set foot outside their houses in such weather."

Re: Outside 95th's billet
Sharpe snorted at that - the poncy bastard might have an umbrella, but at least he had been in the rain. "Toffs wouldn't know what hit 'em. Will I get the men assembled then?"

Re: Outside 95th's billet
"Some toffs," Cadoux amended with a smile. "And yes - let us get the men ready. And then I really think we should move off - it is our right to lead, after all."

Re: Outside 95th's billet
Sharpe looked imploringly to heaven as Cadoux left the billet, putting up his unmbrella, when he remembered the other young man in the room. "Lieutenant Jaeger, of the 60th, isn't it?"

Re: Outside 95th's billet
Jaeger came to attention and saluted: "Yes, sir." He paused to collect his thoughts and nervously licked his lips. "I am told you are a friend of Doctor Maturin, sir."

Re: Outside 95th's billet
"Aye, I am." Sharpe looked critically at Jaeger. "Might you perhaps be here on behalf of Lieutenant Waldegrave?"

Re: Outside 95th's billet
Jeager felt a blush creeping up his cheeks and swallowed. "Yes, sir." He stodd very straight and looked up at the 95th Lt. "I am."

Re: Outside 95th's billet
"Well, then," said Sharpe, tugging at his jacket. He nodded for Jaeger to follow him further into the billet.

Re: Outside 95th's billet
Stiffly, with his back ramrod straight, Jaeger followed the other officer inside.

Re: Outside 95th's billet
"Listen," said Sharpe once he was sure they could not be overheard. "Doctor Maturin doesn't want any bloodshed, so if your man is willing, he'll put it all behind him, no loss of face. But if your man wants a duel, he's told me to tell you that he's fair deadly."

Re: Outside 95th's billet
Jaeger didn't want to anyone listening in, either, and replied quietly: "Lt. Waldegrave believes that he can not 'put it all behind him', and is perfectly willing to put his life on line for his honour."
He was not so sure what to make of the deadliness of the doctor. Doctors were sworn not to harm their patients, weren't they?

Re: Outside 95th's billet
Sharpe sighed; he did not think Stephen was yet fit to fight the man. "Then as the challenged Doctor Maturin reserves the right to choose the weapon; it'll be fought with swords, unless Lieutenant Waldegrave swears on his honour he can't use one. You get to pick the time and the place."

Re: Outside 95th's billet
"Well, I realise that traditionally these things should be resolved within 48 hours, but as we are about to pursue a French army over rather impracticable ground... would it suit to postpone the event untill we are in a cantoned in a city again?"
He smiled shyly. "I believe duels of nations take precedence."

Re: Outside 95th's billet
Sharpe grinned then; he had not been expecting the shy little officer to actually have some sense. "Aye, it will. It's for you to pick the time and ground, though I don't need to say discretion would be best for all concerned, eh?

Re: Outside 95th's billet
Jaeger nodded stiffly and replied seriously: "Yes sir, discretion is essential. Once I have found a suitable time and venue I will contact you." His toneturned slightly apologetic as he continued, "If you will excuse me, I need to see to the provisioning of my men. If tehre is anything else, I will see you later, in the van?"

Re: Outside 95th's billet
"Yes, if you need to," said Sharpe, shouldering his rifle and holding out his hand.

Re: Outside 95th's billet
Jaeger shook the offered hand. "Sir." He gave a slight nod and left.

Re: Outside 95th's billet
Sharpe nodded, then left the billet. His men were assembled, but Carty was still holding onto that damn horse. He muttered a curse under his breath; he had forgotten the mysterious creature. Where had he seen her before? "Fall in, Carty," he said, and the boy hurried away - he walked around the horse, absent-mindedly patting her neck. "Where'd you come from, eh?"
This particular sheen, the colour of dead leaves on a forest floor...
"Oh, bugger!" he said as he remembered, and Carty jumped. Harper looked at him questioningly. It was that Frenchman's - des Sablieres'. He had given the bloody creature to Sharpe, and now it had arrived. He swore; what was he going to do with the creature? Not ride it - if they came across the French he would work better on foot. "Harris!" he called, taking out his notebook and scribbling a slip as fast as he was able. "Run to the 62nd's billet; they should be moving out, but someone will know where to find Sergeant Allday. Ask him to keep this one with the other regimental horses, then catch up with us."

Re: Outside 95th's billet
Harris took the slip and nodded. "Right, Sir. I'll be as quick as possible. He took the horse's reins from Carty, and gave a tug - the mare turned to look at him but seemed happy enough to follow. Sharpe hadn't liked the animal when the Frenchman had given it to him, but it was his now. Noix de Mai - that was her name. He was glad though that Mr Sharpe was going to keep his feet on the ground. A horse might look good on parade - though the lieutenant didn't have much of a seat - but was of little use in skirmishing or scouting.

Re: Outside 95th's billet
Upon order and dismissal the rifleman left as well, rejoining the rest of the 60th Rifles.
