"Senhora, I am sorry for what happened to your husband. I truly am. Do you have family nearby that we can bring you to?" Stephen asked.

Re: Leaving Terpsy.
"We do not want you, or your boat," Stephen sad, simply and honestly. "But there will be a battle here soon, and it has been a trying day for you already. We would be more at ease to see you safe before we go on our way."

She cursed him colorfully, and by now she had reached the boat and was able to produce a knife.

Re: Leaving Terpsy.
"Somehow I do not think she believes us," Padstowe said, although rather superfluously. He eyed the path leading up from the beach again; still there was no sign of movement.

"Then we walk away," said Stephen, and turned away from the woman, walking back to Yates and Raoul. "Come, Captain."

"What do you want from us?" she cried in vexation. "Tell them to bring back my husband. Call them back!"

Re: Leaving Terpsy.
Padstowe doubted the sense of turning his back on an armed woman, but deemed it best to follow Maturin's lead. He smiled, touched his hat and turned to follow the doctor back to the others.

Re: Leaving Terpsy.
"I cannot," said Stephen. "There is no way to contact them now. "If he is truly an American then he can appeal. Appeals are often successful."

Re: Leaving Terpsy.
"Appeal to who?" she asked desperately. She moved to hover over the boxes and heavy things that they had abandoned, but now they were walking away. "Appeal to who?" she cried louder.

"If he is truly an American, then his embassy in London - the Americans who look after Americans in England - will appeal on his behalf to the Admiralty, who is in charge of the Navy."

Re: Leaving Terpsy.
She stared at the man in bewilderment. That would take months, years even! How was she supposed to get to London? How was he, if he was trapped on a ship?

"I believe that the ship is heading for England now; it is not a very long voyage at all," said Stephen.

She blinked. "What is the name of the ship? It's not staying for the blockade?"

"It will be, and then I believe they return to England. But I do not know for certain; I am not a crewmember. It is called the HMS Terpsichore."

Re: Leaving Terpsy.
"Will I - can I go on board to see him?" She was gradually letting down her guard, her stance changing from defense to supplication. "Are you going back? I could go with you, just to see him. We could take my boat."

Re: Leaving Terpsy.
"I do not think that will be possible, senhora. As you said, they will be in the blockade, and I will not be going on board again. I was a passenger only."

Re: Leaving Terpsy.
She sat on one of the chests, weeping anew and wiping her tears on the corner of her shawl. "What about them?" she asked, gesturing at the other men and the boy, the knife all but forgotten in her hand.

"I am a doctor; the man in red is my patient. We are making our way to the British army, who are to arrive here soon, or already have done."

Re: Leaving Terpsy.
"And them? They're not going back either?" She could see that the other man was French, in his grey hussar's uniform. A strange group of men, but she was not interested in their doings apart from their effect on herself and her husband.

She looked up, primarily to make sure he was not approaching with menace. "My father, in Gaia. Just up there. But I'm not leaving the boat here for you!"
