"Oh, nothing," Padstowe said airily. "It's just my eyebrow twitches of its own accord sometimes - see? There it goes again. It's an odd complaint, yet it does me no harm."

"But of course," Raoul said, slightly surprised. He had not been listening to the exchange, just watching the birds flying alongside the ship, and enjoying the fresh air and freedom. He moved away, to find another position, out of hearing but not out of sight of his companions.

Stephen smiled gratefully at des Sablières, then turned back to Padstowe. "Jonathan, I cannot tell you how glad I am to see you looking so much better."

"So am I," Padstowe said, and flexed the fingers of his left hand a little. He grunted quietly, but they were sligtly less stiff. "I think the change of location has been better than imagined."

He looked up at Stephen somewhat guiltily.

"I apologise for stagnating in Lisbon; I was not myself."

"Damn me if I knew what they were," he said glumly. His fingers were tingling somewhat now, like a less numb version of pins and needles. "I still behaved like a bore."

"No, not really," he said. "And if perhaps I did they were insignificant compared to yours."

"I am not afraid of him, Jonathan. I will see that he cannot hurt more people," said Stephen. "I will be careful; I will not advertise myself."

To not be afraid, or at least wary, of what Hakeswill could do was to Padstowe's mind foolish indeed. He sighed and stared down at the deck. Hakeswill in his opinion should be hunted as one would a poisonous snake - at arms length, with a very long stick, and never let out of sight.
