Peter looked up from his diagram. "Because you have to turn through less of an angle that way?" Or would it be? He could not quite imagine it. But perhaps in a ship that did not like sailing against the wind...

Having been expecting one of the older boys to answer, Bolitho was pleasantly surprised to hear Yates speaking up, despite having answered incorrectly.

"Close Mr. Yates, although wearing actually requires more space to perform the action than tacking. The answer is that the ship must have enough speed in which to tack, whereas wearing can be done with less speed and in nearly any condition of sea or wind. However, as I already mentioned, there must be sufficient space in which to wear."
