On Picquet Duty (6th Night)

"Yessir." Grogan saluted again and wondered if, as he'd heard, the major had indeed been shot. He was a sorry stupid fellow if he had. When Henderson had turned away, Grogan looked back over the picquets, who were in their proper places again.

"Keep an eye fer any more trouble, boys," he told them, though he knew they hardly needed to be told.

"Yes, Corporal. It'd be a relief if the French turned up. Give them something else to think about."

Damned shame about the horses. But at least it wasn't the men lying out there. He took up the previous position, just off the road and let his eyes readjust to scan the road, and the hillside.
