Re: Afternoon, Sixth Day
Timothy Willoughby wrote:"Can we sit then?..I wish not to seem less able but.. my leg is trying to make its displeasure known." He had much of his weight on Perkins own shoulders and last that he wished was to be his burden , anybody's burden, for longer than needed. He wasn't the kind that wished to be pampered and carried around, contrary to any popular belief.
"There's always somethin' ter be your first." He smiled at that but didn't press further. Perkins was becoming, what he hoped, a friend, but as with any, hospitality was only given as long as the guest knew his bounds as well to take it.
"Of course, of course!" Perkins cried, leading him to a rock. They did not have long to wait before the surgeon's wagon reached them, and Perkins went in search of the surgeon himself.
Re: Afternoon, Sixth Day
Edrington grinned at Vickery's comment. As mistreatment of prisoners went, this was schoolboy treatment, but seemed to have caused considerable discomfiture.

Re: Afternoon, Sixth Day
"Yes sir!"
Newbury fumbled his way through saluting again and hurried off, his gait hindered badly by his awkward position. Ten minutes wasn't long but he was sure he could find an undamaged pair of trousers before the column got underway again. Or at least he'd better!

Re: Afternoon, Sixth Day
Taking a seat at the rock, he observed as men moved past and tried to find a place in which he was comfortable and kept his trousers in a considerably upright position. Settling for a cross legged kind of stance, a hand made sure his garments did not stray. And then he waited. Hopefully all would concluded soon.
Re: Afternoon, Sixth Day
He spotted Willoughby near the road and hobbled down to join him. "Mind if I sit here too?" Newbury asked, nodding at the fellow from the 95th who was with Willoughby.
Re: Afternoon, Sixth Day
"Don't mind at all. " He motioned to a spot where Newbury was most welcome to take residence: "That was a close one, eh?" He grinned, for the feeling of freedom and of being alive and well was making him rather high spirited.
"Nice trousers, there." He'd teased the lad, for they'd been no different in that predicament and as much as it looked awfully embarrassing before the officers, it now, somehow looked rather amusing.

Re: Afternoon, Sixth Day
Despite his lingering embarrassment, Newbury grinned. "Yours ain't doin' so well either. Are we waiting on the surgeon's wagon?"
Re: Afternoon, Sixth Day
"Aye, we are. Wouldn't do if we were hopping over to it, when 'twill be coming past any'ow." He grinned and tugged at the fabric some: "Found a suitable pair of trouser ter keep you warm while you get those buggers sewn back on?" He lifted a button, as if to show whom he'd meant and laughed, rather amused.
"'tleast we weren't made to stand. Now that would've been awful."

Re: Afternoon, Sixth Day
Newbury shuddered at the thought of being made to stand up. "I'm gonna try begging a pair off one of the lads," he replied. "An' hopefully I can sew these back together."
He looked down the road, at the neat lines of red-coated men. "That the wagon down there?"

Re: Afternoon, Sixth Day
"Think it is." He looked to it, trying to find (err Perkins had gone for it, i think ^.^; ) where the fellow who'd helped him down the slope, was going.
"Good luck with your search." He grinned again and found himself doing that too often that day. Especially so as they've had little to grin about just moments before. "Your head alright there?" He motioned light towards the bruise.

Re: Afternoon, Sixth Day
Good. He didn't have very long to find new trousers.
"Thanks mate," Newbury said. "My head's all right, mostly. Bit sore."
The Rifleman stood up, awkwardly. "C'mon, it's probably better to meet the wagon part-way, or the army'll be leavin' before it gets to us."

Re: Afternoon, Sixth Day
"I'll wait here on it." If he could help it, he'd do less hopping about on his injured ankle, and there was Perkins he ought to have waited for too. "You go ahead, lad. N' careful on those." He smiled, bemused at the stance that the rifleman was taking. "See you later in camp ey? Leave some surgeon left for me too!"
Re: Afternoon, Sixth Day
"All right." He'd forgotten that Willoughby's ankle wasn't in the best shape. "See you, sure."
Newbury waved briefly, then turned away to hurry as quickly as he could toward the surgeon's wagon. The wagon's driver stared at him in surprise when he got close but Newbury ignored him.
"Hey in back there," he called out, before he hobbled around to the back of the wagon. "Hey and hullo. Do you have a spare pair of trousers for a lad hard-up for 'em?"

Re: Afternoon, Sixth Day
"Trowsers, is it? And just what have you been doin' to yours?"
Cotton poked his head out. "Got some in me pack, though why I should let you have 'em, i couldn't say." He withdrew his head and rummaged through his pack before reappearing, holding a pair of very crumpled issue blue trousers.
"Anyways, 'bout time I started walkin' again," he said. "Even if I do have to leave me stuff with the Captain's baggage. Gimme a bit o' room to get down, will you?"

Re: Afternoon, Sixth Day
"Joseph Newbury, what have you done to your trousers?" Maggie exclaimed. "Never mind, I don't want to know. I'll leave you to change," as she hurried to climb down, shaking her head.
Re: Afternoon, Sixth Day
His face flushed hot again. "Had a brush with some Frogs, a bit ago. They cut off all my buttons. Braces, too."
Still, despite his verbal reluctance, Cotton held out a pair of blue trousers. Newbury grinned a little and stepped back to let the other Rifleman hop down from the wagon. "Obliged, mate. You too, Miss Evans. Wait a minute and I'll walk back to the front with you, Gabe."
And he climbed awkwardly up into the wagon so he could change out of his useless trousers.

Re: Afternoon, Sixth Day
"Bastards. Don't you lettin' 'em cut the buttons off them trousers, will you, Joe? They's me best, after all." He shook his head as the other Rifleman scrambled awkwardly into the wagon to change in private.
"I ought to rejoin the Company, Maggie," he said. "Should've bin back with them this mornin', like, and I don't want to get chewed out for lazin' around. Only, would you look after me pack? Or put it with the Captain's stuff, if you can't find room for it."

Re: Afternoon, Sixth Day
"I don't plan on gettin' caught by 'em again, so it ain't likely," Newbury said, having swiftly changed and now carefully rolling his own trousers so they can be stowed inside his pack. "You'll have 'em back soon as I get mine sewn up again."
He hopped back out of the wagon and picked up his rifle. "I'll carry your pack for you too, if you want. Least that way it'll be close enough by when we're stopped for the night."

Re: Afternoon, Sixth Day
"You've got your own to carry without worryin' about mine as well. It'll be all right back here, though. I won't want anythin' out of it till this evenin', and Maggie won't mind bringin' it with her when she comes a-visitin' later."
He hefted his own rifle. "I reckon I've done enough lazin' around. Can't believe I missed out on the first proper action we've seen since winter."

Re: Afternoon, Sixth Day
"Here, give it to me. I can carry it as far as the baggage, and Jessy will take it from there." Maggie's face was a scolding frown as she turned away, but its reasons were unknowable. A moment later, however, she ran back to give Cotton a brief kiss on the cheek before hurrying away to find her donkey.
Re: Afternoon, Sixth Day
Newbury grimaced. "It was hardly a proper action. We both surprised each other, but I was hardly payin' attention to scouting anyway. The lads did well enough though."
He rubbed the bruise on his face and shook his head. "Only got one shot off myself, then they knocked me 'round the head and that was it. Sorry showin' for a Rifleman, that!"
OOC - I'm close to going off for the night. Supposed to be sleeping nights now, of all things... >_>

Re: Afternoon, Sixth Day
"Cheers, lass," he said, turning a delicate shade of pink under his tan as she came back and kissed his cheek.
"Better luck next time, Joe. And anyone can be surprised... Never expected the French to be quite this close, anyways. D'you think they got lost, or had their map upside down?"
(You're not the only one! If I stay up much later, it'll be early!)

Re: Afternoon, Sixth Day
Newbury made himself shrug, as if the entire ordeal had been meaningless. "Hard to say, but there was a fair number of 'em roused up when our skirmishers came close. We might get a proper crack at them sooner than we thought."
