He leaned forward and carefully pulled the cherry from the stalk with his teeth, ate it and spat the stone out.

"Like that, see?"

When the wagon had finally come to a halt, Maggie poked her head out through the canvas door and looked around. "Let's go and see," she said, helping Cotton to his feet.

"Easy, lass, can't move so quick as all that, you know." He took his rifle - a good rifleman never left his weapon out of sight - and climbed down to the ground.

"I don't think I'll need it. And it's prob'ly too heavy for you." He disliked the idea of leaving it behind, but he really couldn't ask her to carry it - nor did he expect that of her.

"You'd be surprised," she said with a grin. "I'm stronger than I look. But no, I don't think you'll need it either. Come on. Hand me your rifle and hold onto my arm."

"It's me back that's hurtin', not me wits that've got scrambled," Cotton grumbled good-naturedly. "I'm quite able to carry me own rifle, you know." He offered her his arm, resting his hand on the hilt of his sword-bayonet to help prevent it from tangling either his legs or hers.
