Paol took the rags and dunked them in the water, half wringing them out before handing them back. "There's blankets at the end of the bed if you need somethin' dry."

He did the same with his shirt, holding the dripping garment over the bucket and gingerly shifting his left hand beneath it to help squeeze out the excess water. It reminded him suddenly of Rosy and Mathilde and he faltered, the memory taking him hard beneath the breast bone. He pressed the shirt to his face, scrubbing roughly at the dried blood and grime. If his face was wet, the sodden linen was reason enough.
