Maid? Oh yes, Woodmarsh vaguely recalled Jenny asking him if she could take on a ladies' maid.

"Ah yes, of course. How nice to make your acquaintance, Polly," he said, giving the girl a respectful bow. (Being as she was just a camp follower, after all, he decided not to be bestow one of his grand, exaggerated bows.) "Then it seems I shall be seeing you around more often. That is something to look forward to, I must say."

"All right, darling, don't embarrass the girl," Jenny said lightly, giving his arm what might pass for an affectionate caress.

Seeing their interaction, Polly could feel her face heat further, and stared even more intently at the ground. She was not sure if she was supposed to wait until dismissed, or leave them alone. Perhaps she had made the wrong choice in becoming a maid! She did not know what to do.
