13 June; Riverside Revelry
The two bottles of wine he'd rescued from that dead Frog's pack had been carefully shepherded back to camp and had remained hidden in Mister Cobb's tent until after the lieutenant had departed for the evening. He'd been issued an invitation to dine with the Light company and McIntyre wasn't sorry to be spared the work of preparing dinner for his officer.
With the evening thus free, he knew very well what he was going to do. In his breadbag were two bottles of wine, a bag of sausages, and the remnants of the cheese he would have otherwise served to Mister Cobb and there was a small pile of washing in his arms. The washing was only a cover. McIntyre's real goal was a swim, but he was well aware that it never hurt to have a practical reason to be at the river.
At the water's edge, he took the precaution of arranging the few pieces of clothing so it looked like they were actually being cleaned, then he quickly unlimbered his breadbag. His jacket and stock were removed, and his gaiters, shoes, and stockings shortly thereafter. Thus more comfortably attired, McIntyre got down to the business of dinner. A corner of the cheese and two sausages were washed down with a healthy amount of wine, then the food was tucked carefully away.
The wine, however, stayed out. He had since pulled off his shirt and waded into the shallows. The water felt good after the day's heat. McIntyre sank down to his neck once he judged he had gone out deep enough and, after a quick swig of wine, dunked his head under. Yes, that definitely felt good. He swiped water from his eyes when he came back up for air and grinned. This was a rare old treat!
A little more than half the bottle was gone before he felt pleasantly at ease enough to sing, though his voice had never been the greatest. Still. Who was likely to care? Or even recognise the song, for that matter? There were few enough soldiers who knew sea-shanties, after all.

Re: 13 June; Riverside Revelry
(OOC: Freddie and Pye are coming from here)
Freddie tensed as soon as he became aware of the strange croaking. He exchanged a confused look with Pye.
"It is a song, true?", he asked in a whisper. "Should we ...?"
He motioned to the pile of rock.
"Vielleicht someone washes. Then we can shout 'Boooh!' and he runs away!"
The young German had to hide a giggle; the immersion in cold water had done nothing to improve there respective appearance: They looked worse rather, half covered in mud and completely wet.

Re: 13 June; Riverside Revelry
"Or... or we could hide 'is clothes." He indicated the ones that he saw from the position they were in. "Take 'em back ter camp some'ere's an' then.. when they stop washin' they come and...no clothes, so they need ter go back!" He whispered, a grin spreading across his face.
The pair really did not look presentable. rather than having been cleaner, which was the whole intention of getting up to the river, they were now dirtier and Friedrich's hair still stood at odd angles and in part flattened sleek, honey making it sticky. "He's singin' funny... think it's...it's not a soldier song. More like'un from a ship." Atleast what the lyrics suggested.

Re: 13 June; Riverside Revelry
Freddie concentrated and tried to pick out the melody.
"It's nice!" He softly repeated a few bars.
"You think we can do it? With him not see us?"

Re: 13 June; Riverside Revelry
"I don't know. Think he is washing' or got summat to do with those bottles there?" He indicated the aforementioned objects. "Mebbe if we are real quiet... though , wonder if we should see who it is firs'... we can't end up sneaking of with a sergeant's coat. It'll be t' death o' us! Or if its sum'one real nasty...that we know."
Re: 13 June; Riverside Revelry
Freddie nodded. He didn't relish the thought of running afoul of some of the more unsavoury members of their company either.
"If we go to that stone, vielleicht we can see over it a little?", he suggested.

Re: 13 June; Riverside Revelry
Between the wine and the pleasant cool of the river, McIntyre was as close to happy as he ever got these days. These land-bound lads had no idea what being afloat was like, but he did, and as he let himself drift slowly around in the eddy by the bank, he let his memory float away to long-gone days.
It did not take much conscious thought to dredge up those old songs, at least. They weren't often sung aboard Navy ships, but he'd heard them often enough from merchant sailors and whalers ashore. Most of the ones he knew best were work-songs. Which only made sense, after all.
The words to the Dead Horse shanty seemed to hesitate on his lips as he sang them, but he hardly noticed. With only a brief pause to swallow down some more wine, McIntyre carried on, too pleasantly immersed in his solitude at that moment to pay any serious mind to his broader surroundings.

Re: 13 June; Riverside Revelry
"Aye. Let's go." Pye nodded and began to move to their new position. While he made progress in that direction however, he thought back on why they were here and what little paper he was given - now soaked and muddy, oops - and he paused. "No... Freddie. Les' not.. let's not hide his things, not this time. 'least wait till things settle down a bit, ya know." He turned to the lad. "...couse if we get in trouble now....it'd be real bad." He scowled at that and peered over the rock.
There was a man comfortably floating in the river. Was he alive? Well of course he was, dead men tell no tales and sing no songs. "Look'im!"

Re: 13 June; Riverside Revelry
Freddie looked puzzled for a moment, then his lips formed an understanding 'oh!' and he said:
"Natürlich! But let us trotzdem look."
Joining Pye at the rock, he peered over it as well, then dipped down again, asking dubiously:
"You think he is good? He sounds ... funny. Vielleicht we should ask, ob he ill is?"
If Freddie had understood the words correctly, the man was singing something about someone dead; either a horse or a man, Freddie wasn't sure of that, but both were somewhere in that song. So perhaps the man was from the cavalry? But what was he doing floating in the river?

Re: 13 June; Riverside Revelry
"Vielleicht." Pye answered subconsciously. He knew now what the word meant and grinned when saying it. "Maybe he is drunk? Let's approach him, shall we? We need to wash you anyway." He got up and ruffled Friedrich's hair. "We said we went here for that reason. Can't come back with you dirty as can be...And lets make sure he's a'right too and he don't float off from us."
Re: 13 June; Riverside Revelry
Freddie grinned and shook his head like a wet dog, making his hair stand out to all sides.
"Yes, let's", he finally had the contraction worked out, "see that he does not swim to the Frogs without wanting it."
Taking off his dripping jacket and leathers before going near the water this time, he eyed the mud-smeared sleeve.
"And I think we need to wash our uniforms before we go back. The Captain really can't say something about that. We look like ... Dreckferkelchen."

Re: 13 June; Riverside Revelry
"Oi, Oi! " As Friedrich shook mud went flying everywhere and although Pye could not really get much muddier he claimed that he could and that Friedrich just succeeded in making him that!
"Hmm.. what's Dreckferkelchen?" He inquired. "Bitte tell." He could not remember the word for tell, say or anything similar.

Re: 13 June; Riverside Revelry
Freddie gave another shout of laughter, not caring any longer whether that strange man around the riverbend heard them. If he was ill, it was perhaps better if they weren't sneaking up on him. He might get a heart arrest otherwise. It was also very good to hear Pye's German improve; that 'bitte' had been exactly right and easily understandable.
"We usually say 'bitte sag' or 'bitte sag's mir'! And a Dreckferkelchen ..."
Following his friend down to the water again, he tried to explain:
"It is a baby Schwein ... a baby pig, after it has gone and played in the ... Dreck." He fetched a generous quantity of mud from the bank and held it up. "Dreck. Schlamm. This stuff. What do you call it?"

Re: 13 June; Riverside Revelry
There was somebody on the river bank. The barks of laughter made that apparent. It wasn't an officer, at least, for no officer would laugh upon discovering a man swimming, so McIntyre was not immediately worried.
He was, however, curious. He stuffed the cork back into the wine bottle and, perhaps a trifle reluctantly, struck out for shore. Or at least nearer to shore. Leaving the water so soon was not the most attractive idea.
"The shore ahoay," he called, deciding he'd gone far enough when his feet touched bottom, thus enabling him to stand upright.

Re: 13 June; Riverside Revelry
"Piglet. Little pig is piglet.. an'.... this is mud or dirt. I think you mean mud. It's when earth is mixed with lots of water and makes us like this." He pointed to himself and then at the other lad and at the mud the boy was holding.
He was about to say more when he heard the call. He turned and saw that the man was much closer to the bank now. Oh! He recognised him alright. "That's McIntyre. Him's from the 33rd." He whispered and waved. "Him a... i think he was a marine, on a sea soldier or something." He then called back. "Greetin'! Wot' ye doing there?"

Re: 13 June; Riverside Revelry
Freddie peered curiously, but rather myopically at the head in the water and offered a slightly diffidently "Ahoi!" of his own. Still trying to puzzle out whether this man was a sailor, a soldier or perhaps something comletely different, he was completely content to let Pye conduct the conversatation, especially since he seemed to be aquinted with the man.
Re: 13 June; Riverside Revelry
He knew the voice that answered him first and it made him grin. "Hullo then," McIntyre greeted, wading a little closer to the river bank. "Just down here for a bit of swimmin', while the lieutenant's washin' dries. And your own selves?"

Re: 13 June; Riverside Revelry
"We are washing this 'un here. He's dirty." He pointed at Friedrich. He blinked surprised. "...You can swim? Wasn' that more floatin' like?.." He asked and indicated the part of the river where they first saw him.
"How'd you learn? Ah.. and this'un here is Friedrich. He's a German speakin' lad. But he understands English. I'm teachin' him!"

Re: 13 June; Riverside Revelry
"Oh aye?" He glanced at the other Rifleman and pulled a face. "He's been rollin' in somethin', anyway. Sure he ain't really some sorta mud-fish?"
Then he shrugged. "Floatin' is part of swimmin'. Bit too much of a current here to go too far anyway."

Re: 13 June; Riverside Revelry
Freddie continued to smile and nod, friendly but a bit uncertainly, as the strange man talked to Pye. While he managed by now to disentangle his friend's dialect well enough, he was not so proficient with other people's speech yet. He though he had understood that that he was supposed to be some kind of fish and that they were now discussing swimming, but the first remained a mystery and the the details of the second eluded him.
Just to say something and not appear completely stupid, he extended a hand, after using the seat of his trousers to wipe off the mud.
"Hullo, Herr McIntyre. Es freut mich, Sie kennenzulernen."

Re: 13 June; Riverside Revelry
Accepting the offered handshake meant wading closer to shore, which McIntyre did, though not without some regret. "Hullo then, Mud-fish," he replied, returning the greenjacket's grip. Whatever else the boy had said was nothing less than gibberish though.
"So, what," the Irishman went on as he sloshed through the shallows to tuck the mostly-empty wine bottle back into his breadbag. "You lads hidin' too, while you're doin' your washin'?"

Re: 13 June; Riverside Revelry
"Him's not a mud-fish. " Pye shook his head and chuckled. "Name's Fred...Fridrih Rotland'r." He indicated his friend then moved out of the way of the Irishman. "Dia duit!" He said after, tilting his head and looking quite innocent.
"We ain't hidin' no.. jus' gone ter wash him up...been summat clumsy comin' down this slope..an' now....we're both wet."And the slip of paper that had the permission was probably running as much as the French ought to have.

Re: 13 June; Riverside Revelry
Fred, eh? Odd sort of name.
"None of that stuff," McIntyre admonished with a grin. "Never did learn it meself. So you ain't hidin', only one of you's down for a washin', but both of you are wet. Now that says to me there's been some skylarkin' done."
He wiped the grin from his face. "Your officer know you two lads been skylarkin'?"
