Re: Time for Tea, 11th June
"A'right." He nodded and smiled. He was very grateful for the help and the teachings that Cotton was giving him, despite everything. The positions, the reasons behind them actually helped much more than if he was just told to stand this way or that.
When he went to get up, just to drop in the possition he saw that it took much more time and effort than when he just dropped to his knee. BUt he did it anyway. Once, twice, to practice going in the right position, only to interchange it into kneeling than lying position again. "THis is really helpin' me, Cotton. M' grateful to ye. Thank you. Makes so much sense."

Re: Time for Tea, 11th June
Cotton shrugged. He wasn't sure he could say that Pye was welcome, because he wasn't really doing it for Pye's sake. He was doing it for the Captain's sake, and for the rest of the Company. The quicker Pye could do his duty as a Rifleman, the better for everyone.
But even just thinking that made him feel like a bastard. "So long as it's helpin'." He gave a quick grin. "An' you'm learnin' quick, I'll say that."

Re: Time for Tea, 11th June
"It is. More'n you think." Pye answered shyly and lowered his gaze to try it again. This time he did lying down, then standing and aiming and only then kneeling and just after lying down again. He'd tried to quicken his pace when he did it, but also to have his attention not on where his leg would go, or hand, but rather on an imaginary soldier, up ahead.
"S' somethin' I will need ter know so that I don't prove ter be a lia....so I'm not making it dangerous fer me partner when I have 'un. If I have 'im. I don't want them ter be gotten killed couse o' me." He looked seriously at Cotton.

Re: Time for Tea, 11th June
Lia-something? Cotton shrugged; the Captain would be able to work that one out, but Cotton couldn't.
"Of course you'll have one, eventually, you keep all-on goin' on like this. You can't possibly 'spect to still be fightin' as part of a three this time next year, can you?" He grinned. "Anyhow, he'll keep an eye out for you, too, like you'll be watchin' out for him."
He just hoped that any partner Pye might end up with would be able to rein the lad in a bit, before he really went and screwed up.

Re: Time for Tea, 11th June
"Well, If that 'appens I know it won't last till a year that I'm still in threes. You two would shoot me... jus' ter end that." But, while it sounded quite amusing in his mind, and a mere joke, saying it out loud might have been too close to what could have happened, to be funny. He bit his lip and shrugged. "...When you firs' got your partner,..wot' did you expect? Did it... did it meet your expectations, were you happy? was it hard ter get ter see if it's the right one or not?"
Re: Time for Tea, 11th June
Cotton wasn't sure he could shoot anyone in cold blood, let alone a fellow Rifleman... if Pye was indeed a fellow Rifleman after what he'd done. He couldn't even shoot Pye - he couldn't even thump him when given the opportunity.
"Dunno quite what I expected," he replied slowly, thinking back. "It was a barrack room on the Isle o' Wight, where our depot is. Got taken along by a German corporal with an accent I didn't understand, and left there on me own with a room full o' men I couldn't understand. And one man comes over an' introduces himself... an' we bin partners ever since."

Re: Time for Tea, 11th June
"So's in a way, you got chosen by another man?...But we can't have a room full o' men here. Ain't many who don't have anyone an'.. ain't many rooms ter put them in." Pye thought that being put into a place such as described by Cotton, alone, without the knowing of any of the other occupants must have been rather intimidating.
"Do yer think we'll wait till someone...well, comes in like I did?" He did not exactly want to suggest that they should wait till someone's partner is killed. It would be inconsiderate at the very least.

Re: Time for Tea, 11th June
"Sort of. What usu'lly happens is the Captain pairs folks up, though they'll only stay in a pair if they both decide to. If they decide it ain't goin' to work, they'll go back to the Captain and see if he can arrange something else." He shrugged. "It works out, usu'lly, in the end."
He rolled over and sat up. "We've had a Rifleman join us, from the 95th. So I'd say chances are pretty good the Captain'll put you with him."

Re: Time for Tea, 11th June
" A man from the 95th?" He looked at Cotton with some curiosity. "Who is he, do you know?" If shifted his position into a sitting one, resting his rifle across his thighs. "Me.. I wouldn't mind having anyone fer a partner. Well.. It'd be harder with a German, couse I don't understand them at all if they speak German an'..." He still thought they were a somewhat strange folk.
"But....this 95th man, can yer tell me more 'bout it? Please? s' atleast wot' you might know."
"But....this 95th man, can yer tell me more 'bout it? Please? s' atleast wot' you might know."
Re: Time for Tea, 11th June
"Don't know much - Captain ain't told me much. He's called Burke, something Burke. He's from the 95th, not sure how long he's been a Rifleman, though I think he's been in the Army same time as me. Dunno what he's like as a man, though I think the Captain thought he was all right. Well. He didn't seem as though he was goin' to keep an eye on him more'n usual with a new Rifleman."
He pulled his feet in till he was sitting cross-legged, and laid his rifle across his lap. "The Germans are all right - you'll pick up some of their language easy enough. I think pretty much all you need to know, really, is 'Fertig!' which is 'Ready!' Which is what you call to let your partner know you've loaded, so he can fire."

Re: Time for Tea, 11th June
"Well, I hope to see him then." If Cotton said that he was as old as him, the man had to be much older than Pye. But with age came experience - as Cotton clearly showed - which meant that he could learn a lot from that man. At the same time however this proved to be a good and a bad thing. If Burke decided that he thought Pye too inexperienced, their partnership would be denied from his side and then.... why was he so quick to consider him being paired up with Burke as a given thing? Or being paired up as soon. He was daft!
"Fertig." The boy nodded after he'd repeated it, for better of for worse." How do you curse in German?" He smiled. "Uh.. perhaps better not."

Re: Time for Tea, 11th June
"I'm not really one for cursin'," the older Rifleman pointed out mildly. "Here's summat else, though. Ein Gewehr." He indicated the rifle lying across his lap, and then pointed at Pye's hand on his own rifle. "Du hast ein Gewehr."
Re: Time for Tea, 11th June
"Ein Gewehr?..." Du hast ein Gewehr." He pointed at himself. "That's how I can say I have......a rifle?" He hoped that he did not mistake that for something else that Cotton might have wanted to say. "Du hast .. I have?"
Re: Time for Tea, 11th June
Cotton nodded, smiling. "Aye. That's the first German I ever learned, that is." He looked around, and spotted Vickery talking to one of the German riflemen. "Ah. Er ist der Hauptmann... He is the Captain."
Re: Time for Tea, 11th June
"Er ist der Hauptmann. " He nodded though he tried to make sense why earlier ein was used and yet this time it was der. Er ist must have been almost like He is... ist.. that made sense. It sounded rather similar. "Er ist der Hauptmann." He said, repeated it a couple of times and smiled. "Hast.. have,.. ist... is!" It sounded rather similar. Perhaps German was not so hard after all.
Re: Time for Tea, 11th June
"Summat like that, anyhow. 'Cept I told you, you got a rifle. Me... Ich habe ein Gewehr." He indicated himself. "Ich." Then he held up his hand as though holding something. "Habe." Then he indicated his rifle again. "Ein Gewehr."
He stretched and then returned to the lesson. "I think it's... ein is more like 'a', a rifle, any rifle. 'Der' is 'the'... He's the Captain, an' there's only the one of him."
He stretched and then returned to the lesson. "I think it's... ein is more like 'a', a rifle, any rifle. 'Der' is 'the'... He's the Captain, an' there's only the one of him."
Re: Time for Tea, 11th June
"Ich... Ich.. oh.. and then Du.." He pointed at Cotton and then at himself. "Ich." But why did the word change when he said Du and when he said ich? Was it not common that the word only changed with him or her? "...Ich habe.. du hast...er hast." because he knew that he was Er.
"I see. Der .....Gewehr?" He pointed at his rifle."Der Hauptmann Vickery." He indicated further. "Der...." But he knew no other word that he could point at so he frowned instead. "Do they have any words that are similar to ours... so that they'd be easier ter remember?"

Re: Time for Tea, 11th June
Cotton shrugged. "I dunno. Um... Ich, du, er... me, you, he. Or summat like it. Words change in English too, only we don't think about that. Um... Der Hauptmann, the Captain. Der... Hmm. It's das Küken, though I dunno why." He thought for a moment. "Oh. Der Jäger, the Rifleman."
Re: Time for Tea, 11th June
"Why do they keep on saying what someone is. Whether male or female?..'s not important is it? A cat's a cat... a Rifleman a rifleman.. we all know he's male and we don't really check a cat for what it is...well not unless we want to.. an' if we don't we call her a she... couse it feels right. But....it's not the same." He concluded with a frown. He still tried to repeat all of the words he had been told and then form a sentence with the limited vocabulary that he had.
"Are we t' only ones that got English and German workin' n' fightin' side b' side.. so much we needs ter learn a whole 'nother language?"
"Are we t' only ones that got English and German workin' n' fightin' side b' side.. so much we needs ter learn a whole 'nother language?"
Re: Time for Tea, 11th June
"I dunno, it's just how it works." He hadn't really given it that much thought, beyond wondering himself why it was so confusing and how even the Germans managed to learn it. "I call me rifle a she, though. But no, it ain't quite the same."
He turned the rifle over and began poking at the touch-hole with the long pin he had for the purpose. "If you mean, this Comp'ny, no, we ain't. If you mean the 60th all together, aye, we are. Sometimes if there's a really important order, the Captain has to read it out in German so as folks understand it prop'ly."
He paused in his fiddling with his rifle so he could think. "Hmm. If you was to ask for summat, 'bitte' means 'please' an' 'danke' means 'thanks'. An' 'bitte' again means 'you're welcome' or summat like it. Oh, an' you'll hear the Germans, when they'm talkin' with the captain, they'll call him 'mein Herr' which is 'sir'."

Re: Time for Tea, 11th June
"Bitte n' Danke." He nodded smiling. "You know.. the French are odd. They say Mercy...well something similar to that to say thanks. It sounds like askin' fer mercy though!...they just make it sound a bit different.. like not Mercy but more like... ah.. merci! Danke sounds a bit like Thanks..or mebbe..I'm jus' being daft." He admitted with a smile.
It was nice learning the words which would not have him stare at the Germans without understanding when all they would have wanted to say was something nice. "But t' Captain won't pair me up with a German, will he?..I don't know enough ter go by in a conversation. Even you don' have a German and yer fluent! M' thinkin' yer right. If he pairs me up soon at all.. it will be with this Burke. Well I hope he does! But..can yer learn me more of t' words jus' in case? Please? Um.. Bitte?"

Re: Time for Tea, 11th June
"I can't talk German prop'ly, not like the Captain can. Only know a bit, 'cause of hearin' it every day for the past... however long it is. An' I don't s'pose he'd put you with a German, 'specially not if you don't want. It's too important for you to be put with someone you'd rather not be with - like I said, you'd get time to make your mind up whether you wanted to change partners. An' once you've got someone you'm happy with, even the Captain can't break it up without the both of you agreein' with it."
He thought back. "Like I said earlier, 'member that time down by the river, after the provosts had had a go at Joe Newb'ry?"

Re: Time for Tea, 11th June
"Is it like...well marrying then. You can't break it up no matter wot'.. unless death do 'em appart..'cept maybe they can say they're going their ways.. which married ones can't? Not 'zactly or properly anyway, I think." He thought back on it. No, when people married, they probably married for good.
"Aye.. t' bastards! Wot o' it?" He asked his eyes attentive on the older man.
"Aye.. t' bastards! Wot o' it?" He asked his eyes attentive on the older man.
Re: Time for Tea, 11th June
Cotton considered, and then shook his head. "Sort of, but not really. The only folks who can break up a partnership is the two Riflemen in it. Do you 'member what the Captain said afterwards, to Joe an' me, about mebbe makin' Joe partner one of the Sergeants? He had to ask me if I'd agree to it, d'you 'member that?"
Re: Time for Tea, 11th June
"I rememember it." Though it was a hazy memory, filled with an emotion he did not wish to feel again, and a memory of things which had gotten them into rather awful trouble.
"...So...wot' if you agreed ter break up fer example, but the other one did not? or t' other way around. So wot' if .. per chance I did not want ter break t' partnership but me partner wanted it. What would happen then?"
