And Cotton felt stupid and upset all over again. Captain Vickery was dead, had been killed in that skirmish, by all accounts. Cotton hadn't seen him fall, and felt guilty that he hadn't, that he hadn't been able to help somehow. The Captain was Cotton's responsibility - had been Cotton's responsibility - and Cotton felt awful for not being there to help, not realising that the Captain even needed help.
Never mind that Cotton would have had to stop fighting in order to help him.
They had to get back to British lines as soon as possible. He sighed and adjusted the rifles on his shoulder before turning to lead the way back to Captain Padstowe and the other Riflemen.
