Cotton spat. That would teach him to think that anyone in a French uniform might be a decent person. Though, come to think of it, an Englishman in a French uniform wasn't a decent person, never had been, and had no understanding of simple human decency or kindness.

Whatever. Cotton wouldn't trust this traitor as far as he could throw him. He wouldn't blame the others for not trusting him, either - after all, even if they said yes, chance were high that he wouldn't fetch the girls, and would instead just gloat.

"Ah, leave it - he ain't worth your spit an' neither's anythin' he says," Cotton retorted. He knew exactly how Zeb Palmer felt - he'd felt exactly the same when Maggie hadn't shown up after they'd marched out of Coimbra. He just wished he could help somehow, anyhow.
