Bitter Springs, NJ | 1923

The Cat's Pajamas is set in the fictional city of Bitter Springs, which is located in Bergen County, New Jersey and is within easy travelling distance of both NYC and Atlantic City. Once a quiet little town, over the past few years it has seen a lot of growth and an increase in population. By 1923, when our story gets its start, it plays home to many privately and corporately owned business and companies, attracting people from various walks of life and socioeconimic classes to come to the city searching for a fresh start on life. It is, all in all, a great place to live with highly regarded public schools and plenty of job opportunities.

But with a boom in industrial and population growth comes an increase in crime, and the Prohibition doesn't help matters much, either. Along with the captains of industry and Average Joes, a variety of gangsters and ne'er-do-wells have found their way to Bitter Springs. As a result, there's a distinctly seedy underbelly lurking beneath the wholesome surface of the town. A few speakeasies have sprung up, where patrons can indulge themselves in drinking and gambling, when sipping coffee and chatting about the weather just doesn't provide enough entertainment.

One thing is for sure - if things continue the way they are, soon enough the police force are going to have their hands full. But for now the citizens of Bitter Springs are willing to ignore the darker side of their fair city, and are focused on having fun and living life throughout the roaring twenties!
