Goya's Disasters of War
I keep on thinking about Goya's Disasters of War, a series of prints from events in Spain, 1808. If you haven't seen them, you might be interested in checking them out. They're full of atrocities and they're quite heartbreaking, but I am glad he made them to show the world what war is really like, from the general populace's point of view (not just the grand, heroic paintings to glorify generals in their beautiful uniforms, etc.) And I appreciate that he shows the suffering both of civilians AND soldiers (at the hand of vengeful civilians). War really, really is hell.

Re: Goya's Disasters of War
Those are some well-done paintings. It brings to mind some of the soldiers I've treated; I have yet to go to war myself, but I have seen the results of it. It is not in any way pretty.
Re: Goya's Disasters of War
No, it's not pretty.
Are you speaking IC as Calderón or OOC? I expect Calderón has seen these sort of atrocities, hasn't he? Soldiers you've treated? Are you a medical person?
(And they're etchings, prints. Not paintings. But then, the website says they were "penned" by Goya, and there's no pen involved either, so oh well.)

Re: Goya's Disasters of War
That was an OOC comment, yes. Calderón has seen a fair amount of unpleasantness as well.

Re: Goya's Disasters of War
I love Goya. He did do some "nice" ordered paintings, (I have his sketch on Wellesley somewhere on the computer... )
yet in private he liked to portrait scenes and people that weren't considered worth even noting, like lunatics and inquisition scenes.
