Could you all please have a think and pass opinion on where it would be most appropriate to insert Sir Arthur into the play? I don't want him turning up where it would be

1) inappropriate.

or

2) Start a thread and find him by himself because it's not plausable for others to be there with him on that date/time.

(Not to mention he would *cough* be "glad" to talk to Sharpe, if he happens to be in the area... By coincidence of course. Of a sort. Of coincidence.)

Sharpe would also appreciate a thread with Sir Arthur, however he wishes me to say that he's unavoidably occupied in chasing, and being chased by, the French from the 27th to the 29th. Sharpe has not been very active account-wise, but I have already established his presence in both the 'Patrolling' thread on the 27 and the 'Clash of Arms' thread on the 29th.

I don't mind having a thread on the 26th or before, if you don't. I'm not sure of the outcome of the skirmishing on Sharpe or his men, but if we avoid talking about the skirmish - if that's going to be possible! - we could have a thread together starting at some point afterward.

Or, would it be possible to have some sort of thread with Vickery, despite not having a shared background in the same way? He's around with the baggage on the evening of the 27th and planning to hold a court martial on the 28th (I've only just realised that takes him away during the Patrolling thread, though I'm going to make sure he's up with the 60th again by close of play on the 28th, in time for the Clash of Arms - even if he doesn't appear in it, I want him to be able to be there. If that makes sense.)

Going on what you say the Vickery thread at this point is possibly a better idea, as even if we don't intend to Sharpe and Wellington might end up compromising the skirmish before or after the date. You know what those two are like when they get going.

So see you, Vickery? I'll leave you to set up the thread, if you don't mind, as you are more up with current circumstances than I.

Oh crumbs. *brain-blanks* What could Wellesley and Vickery actually thread about?! (Though, yes, I am more up to date with the current circumstances... Maybe Wellesley wants to know how the 60th are getting on with the 2nd Guards, who've taken over the role formerly played by the 62nd?)

It'll probably come up in conversation, with some brief mention of the 62nd. Welly will be out by himself for a wander (Will this be day or night?).

*thinks* Vickery's kind of busy on the evening of the 27th, and was up with the 60th earlier that afternoon.

So if Wellesly wants to wander all the way up to the Rifles, the afternoon of the 27th would work. Or after the court martial on the 28th (though the outcome of that is currently unknown, even to the players. Very Happy )

Welly can wander up to the Rifles. He's good at wandering too far by himself and giving his Staff kittens. Smile

I've been doing some research on my character and his relationships with people on this board and it turns out that Charles's brother, Lord Castlereagh, was really close to Sir Arthur. They were good friends. He was the one that appointed Sir Arthur to the Iberian Peninsula. They were born in the same year and everything.

So I'm not sure how that'll effect the rp of Charles and Sir Arthur, but I'd thought I'd throw that out there.

I don't think it would make all that much difference to be honest, going on Wellesley's character. Historically it made him a fraction more patient with Charles than he otherwise would have been, and it's speculated that he did mention him in despatches a bit more than he would have done had Charles not been Castlereagh's brother. (Tied up in the whole patronage structure at that period. Urgh.) Besides that he would treat him no differently to any senior officer in Headquarters.

yeah I thought it wouldn't, considering Arthur's awesomeness and all that. Fight the system, Sir! But anyway, Charles should prove himself more by action than by connections.

Seeing as he sent his own nephew home with a flea in his ear for incompetence I don't think there'd be much danger of patronage overtaking common sense.

Also, just a quick question re: 'A Violent Reaction'. In your reply you put Now that the Irish rebellion has died down, only as far as I am aware any further real threat from Ireland after 1798 was over by about 1801-1803, at least six years beforehand. Did you mean the rebellion of '98, or am I forgetting a more recent unrest?

OH i was just using that as an excuse. Probably after a couple years (decades), the King decided that Ireland was safe after all and decided to relocate the troops. It was my understanding that they were always afraid of a French invasion via Ireland.
