Age: 27
Sex: Male
Place of Birth: Dornheim, Hesse-Kassel (modern Hessen)
Occupation: Disenfranchised minor noble
Family:
Brother Heinrich von Dornheim (in French Imperial service)
Brother Augustus von Dornheim (Midshipman, Royal Navy)
Sister Karla- Malta
Cousin Walter Freling- English by birth. Minor official with the Exchequer of Ireland
Wife Ann (deceased 1804)
Mother Kara- Living in Copenhagen
Description:
Not terribly tall, perhaps 5'6, and slightly overweight.
Light brown hair pulled back in the old style to a clubbed ponytail, the end of which extends to the bottom of his neck and is wrapped in black cloth . Old style waxed mustache.
The Baron has two uniforms. The daily uniform is custom tailored by some of the finest tailors available. The minor piping on the cuffs was sky blue. The color, taken from the family coat of arms, was a source of derision from some officers. His formal uniform was the standard issue of the unit but with sky blue epaulettes and gray piping. On occasion on his left breast he wore his bronze medal given to him by Grandmaster Emmanuel de Rohan-Polduc of Malta.
Strengths and Weaknesses:
von Dornheim is first of all, slightly lazy and quite the drinker. While he is rarely drunk, he generally may be found at some level of being under the influence. In addition, he is not proficient in reading English although he speaks it fairly well. von Dornheim also could be on occasion condescending, but only when annoyed.
His strengths are few. He is an excellent chess player and had studied the treatise of François-André Danican Philidor. He enjoyed cards but was never a consistent player, winning as much as he lost. Money, almost always an issue. Leaving family lands, much had been lost. While he was most certainly not poor, the purse was often quite light for a gentleman.
von Dornheim only truly performed in three places: the drinking table, the chessboard, and when backed into a corner.
Background:
Educated and generally well spoken, Paul, Baron von Dornheim, was a minor German noble. The von Dornheim's amassed their wealth largely in the 1720's as spice brokers and in the 1740's began a Danish shipping firm. He grew up largely in Dornheim but was sent to school in Malta as a young teenager under the German langue. He attended university in Aberdeen for a year studying philosophy. Finding his mastery of writing and reading English was poor, he returned home. Married at 20 to a bride of a minor Hungarian family, von Dornheim cared for his frequently ailing wife until her death 2 years later. By this time, the family had become a verbal opponent of French influence and fled persecution following the German mediatization of 1803. The family had become divided (more to come in RP I hope). Heinrich von Dornheim, Paul's younger brother, volunteered for service in the French Military. Augustus von Dornheim, Paul's youngest brother, fled with him to London where extended family lived while the matriarch fled to Copenhagen to care for the family's merchant interests only to find it seized by the Danish government. Walter Freling,a matrilineal cousin to Paul and a minor official with the Exchequer of Ireland had 'cashed in' favors securing a commission for Paul and a midshipman's birth for Augustus.
Anything Else:
Hoping to have my main guy join 60th Rifles as officer, especially since its largely German formed. I would also be interested in other suggestions I suppose. Planning on eventually RPing most of the family one way or another
Writing Sample/Past Roleplay:
Past roleplay experience: 2004-2012 on a geo-political roleplay forum.
