Description: Gareth is of average height and build, with short black hair and brown eyes. He carries himself with an air of superiority at all times, unless he is among those he considers to be his social equals. Despite his uncaring attitude towards the Service, he is very fond of wearing his officer's uniform and will do so as often as possible. He strives to look impeccable at all times and he loathes the idea of dirtying his uniform. His personality is alternately charming and arrogant, depending upon who he is with. He does not consider it below him to mingle with the men on occasion, though he usually only does so to lord his officer status over them. Even though he has seen very little of battle, when asked about such a thing, he will always cover up his inexperience by telling elaborate stories about all the action he claims to have seen. Those unfamiliar with the army tend to believe his tales; those who are in the army always know better.

Strengths and Weaknesses:
--Having been trained for battle from a young age, he is skilled in the arts of sword fighting, riding, and shooting.
--He will go to nearly any lengths to accomplish a goal, though these goals may not always be honourable. He also tends to believe that the end justifies the means.
--He is rather smart and clever, a fact which can easily be overlooked since he rarely applies his mind to any worthwhile pursuits.
--He has a tendency to be vain and selfish, and often gives more thought to his own well-being than he does to the welfare of his men.
--He has little to no talent for battle planning and strategizing, a rather glaring defect for an officer.
--He does not inspire much loyalty among the troops, being as he lacks many of the merits of good officers.

Background: Gareth was born the second son of a viscount and spent his early years at his family's estate in Wiltshire. Being the second son, he had been destined for military service from the day of his birth, and he received suitable training as part of his education. He had been aware of this fact for a long time, which caused him to continually harbour some jealously towards his older brother. Gareth had never felt the need to do his duty and serve his King, having much more of an interest in socialising and enjoying the finer things in life.

When he reached adulthood, Gareth went to great lengths to enjoy life to the fullest and delay his entry into the army. His father could clearly see what his son was doing, but saw no need to force his hand until absolutely necessary. But after putting up with some years' worth of drinking and carousing, the viscount finally threatened to cut off his son's inheritance unless he agreed to join the army. Reluctantly Gareth agreed, and accepted the officer's commission which his father had purchased for him and became a lieutenant in the Coldstream Guards.

However, this did not work out quite as well as the viscount would have hoped. Though he had become an army officer, Gareth still tried to cling to his old ways as much as he could. Unbeknownst to his father, he managed to avoid being involved in battle through various underhanded means, either through the intervention of high-placed acquaintances or by paying others off. But of course there have been times when he could not connive his way out of battle. However, those have been few and far between, which means that Gareth has barely any experience with actual battle, despite having been an officer for several years.
