Re: Beckwith Castle
Despite himself, Blanchard grinned. "Small blessings! Do you know where we might find useable wood in this place? Something for a fire, you know."

Re: Beckwith Castle
The man shook his head incredulously. "Dont be ridiculous. Everything suitable for a fire was burned long ago. And don't you even think of looking at my barrow," he finished with a glare, pushing it along as he continued walking barefoot down the path.

Re: Beckwith Castle
Damn. Blanchard sighed. It had been worth the attempt, though he doubted the barrow would've proven good for burning anyway.
"Well," he said after a moment, "at least we know there is some sense of order here."
He made little attempt to conceal his sarcasm; not even an hour, and this place was already grating on his nerves.

Re: Beckwith Castle
Daubigny ignored his sarcasm. "We could burn that pianoforte. Did you hear it, and a girl singing? We could burn the pianoforte. Who brings a pianoforte to prison?"

The pianoforte. He'd forgotten about that wretched thing.
"Who brings a girl to prison?" Blanchard retorted.

Re: Beckwith Castle
"You have a point there," Daubigny said, thinking. "And do they keep her? Or is she simply a visitor? Blanchard, that's it! We can dress as women and pretend to be visitors and slip out with them when they go. Possibly."

Re: Beckwith Castle
What. Blanchard made a face.
"I don't care if they keep her in a barn or a proper room - and I'll be damned if I dress in petticoats just to get out of here. Does not 'parole' hold any meaning to you?"

"Parole? Don't be ridiculous. Nobody expects you to keep your silly old parole. Haven't you ever been in prison before? Come on, let's go and find out what she's doing here. I plan to get back to France as soon as possible."

Re: Beckwith Castle
"Hm." Blanchard shrugged. Daubigny could be as nonchalant about it as he wished; Blanchard wasn't going to compromise his sense of honour by attempting to escape. Then again, Daubigny was a naval officer. Such things could generally be expected of naval officers.
He thought of the girl playing the pianoforte and grinned. That particular pursuit of curiosity was one he could agree with. "Yes, let's. Who knows? She might even be pretty."

Daubigny grinned back at him and then turned to face the house. "Right. Then how do we get back inside? Where was... where did we go in the first time?"

Re: Beckwith Castle
"Just there," Blanchard said, pointing. He was reasonably sure that he was indicating the proper entrance. Even if he was wrong, an entrance was still an entrance, after all.

Re: Beckwith Castle
When they had gone through the door, Daubigny could not be sure he recognized the winding whitewashed passages. Were they the same, or just similar? It would obviously take a while to get their bearings in this rabbit warren. But up ahead he could hear the sound of talking and laughter.

Re: Beckwith Castle
Blanchard paused just inside the door to look around. He wasn't positive now that this was the same way they'd come in earlier - but the slightly-echoing sound of voices from farther down the passage was like a beacon.
"Must be that way," he grunted and started toward the sounds. A couple of turns brought them to a fair-sized room filled with people. There were scraps of paper in many hands and all of them were wearing... costumes?
"What...?"

Re: Beckwith Castle
There was a high pitched voice, certainly - but not a woman's. It sounded like a man speaking in falsetto. The door was open and he peered in.
"What...? Oh."
"What...? Oh."

Re: Beckwith Castle
Blanchard was beginning to seriously question the sanity of the other prisoners here.
"I don't know that I dare to go in there."

Re: Beckwith Castle
"Oh don't be shy! Come in, come in!" cried the falsetto man, now speaking with a natural booming baritone which clashed horribly with his dress and rouged cheeks and powdered wig. "The more the merrier, I always say! Join us, and welcome!"

Re: Beckwith Castle
Blanchard advanced a hesitant couple of paces, staring in dumbfounded shock at the man with the painted-up face. He didn't really want to know what sort of lunacy was going on here, yet morbid curiosity loosened his tongue enough for him to ask, "Join you... in what?"

Re: Beckwith Castle
"In our theatricals!" exclaimed a man who was wearing a false hump on his back. "We are rehearsing our play, The Triumph of Virtue, or The Counterfeit Lovers. There are plenty of roles yet to be filled! Shepherdess? Fish-monger? Ancient alchemist?"

Re: Beckwith Castle
Suddenly, Blanchard grinned. "Why, gladly. My friend here would be happy to play the shepherdess, and I the alchemist."
He glanced at Daubigny, his grin broadening. The man had wanted to wear a woman's dress in an attempt to escape, hadn't he? Leaving out the escape attempt, here was his chance.

Re: Beckwith Castle
"What?! I can't... I can't... act." Certainly not with an audience and on a stage and wearing a woman's dress and rouge and a falsetto voice like the strange man opposite him.

Re: Beckwith Castle
"Of course you can," Blanchard told him encouragingly. "Weren't you mentioning that very thing only a few minutes ago?"
He couldn't help grinning; the coincidence couldn't be more perfect.

Re: Beckwith Castle
Daubigny glared daggers at the man. "That was different," he said through gritted teeth. He turned to the hunchback. "I should really be a fish-monger. I'm a naval officer, at home on the sea, and at home with fish. Blanchard can be your shepherdess and... No, what am I saying? We don't want to be in your silly play."

Re: Beckwith Castle
Blanchard's grin turned slightly chilled. "He is not quite in his wits, I'm afraid. Rather perfect for a shepherdess, really. We would be happy to participate."
"Won't we", he added in an undertone, meant to suggest that he would entertain no argument.

Re: Beckwith Castle
Daubigny's grumbling was drowned out by the spontaneous applause from the delighted actors.
"Oh hurrah!" a rather buxom young woman - man - exclaimed. "I'm a shepherdess too. We fall in love with twin brothers. Only they were separated at birth and everybody thinks it's just one man!" She - or he - giggled. "Do you want to be Florence, or Adelaide?"

Re: Beckwith Castle
"Why - I think Florence would be a fine role," Blanchard said, the frostiness now gone from his smile. Despite his initial wariness, he found that he was honestly intrigued by the notion of a play.
"Who is this ancient alchemist?"
