They were shouting to him in both English, which he could understand though he seldom got much practice, and what was probably Portuguese which he did not know. Aurelien replied with one more shout of "Here!"

Then the boat closed in, they were almost along side of the flotsam when the boy decided to let go of his long held grip. Despite his weariness, he flailed in the water holding up one arm extended upward toward the boat hull as he waited for someone to grab for it and begin to haul him to safety. Though his legs still kicked, he was simply too weak to tred water for long.

Post  Jeremy Mitchell Sat Dec 28, 2013 2:28 am

As soon as he deemed them close enough, Mitchell quickly quickly gave his orders: some sailors would conduct the actual rescue and some were responsible for balancing the boat; some oars were pulled in to give them room and two men leaned over the sight to catch hold of Vachot while the others carefully steered the boat as close as possible without actually hitting the swimmer.

Mitchell himself stood ready should one of the men slip or something unexpected happen, but despite his natural eagerness to help, he tried to keep himself in check and not get in the way of the sailors, who were mostly of the captain's own boat crew and chosen for their competence in this kind of situation anyway.

As soon as Smith, a very long, thin maintopman with a constant grin on his face, managed to close his hand around Vachot's sleeve, he leaned back with his whole weight to pull the boy right next to the side, where he was easily hoisted up and into the boat.

As soon as Vachot was safely inside, everybody moved back to their normal spaces and soon the sailors pulled strongly to get them back to the Terpsichore. Nobody wanted to stay on the water longer than necessary or drift any further from the ship.

Pulling a blanket around Vachot, Mitchell said very slowly and with a loud voice to be better understood, despite language barrier and exhaustion:

"I am Lieutenant Mitchell from his Majesty's Fregatte Terpsichore. Who are you and from which ship? Are there others still alive?"

July 17th Situation Hopeless and Getting Worse! - Page 2 Empty Re: July 17th Situation Hopeless and Getting Worse!

Post  Aurelien Vachot Sun Dec 29, 2013 5:24 am

Aurelien felt a sudden grip upon his arm and an upward tug, then more hands grabbing and hauling him out of the water onto the welcome deck of the rowboat. He was an easy enough lift, not having a lot of bulk to him at the best of times with his thin frame. Though he immediately wanted to say something, he instead ended up coughing and sputtering from the seawater.

As most of the crew now got back to their oars to begin the trip back to the main ship, their new arrival was helped up to a sitting position and generously provided with a blanket thrown over his water logged. It would do nicely until hopefully he could be provided with a change of dry clothes. Still coughing a bit, Aurelien forced a smile and nod of acknowledgement for the kindness.

A young man now sat across from him and spoke calmly and distinctly, it was in English. He was sure by now he was being rowed back to an English vessel even before the speaker identified it as a frigate of their royal navy. So he was now a prisoner of war? Well, better than drowning he instantly realized. And unlike the Spanish, the English did not have the reputation of torturing nor killing their prisoners. Quite naturally the man was asking to know more about him. His first thought was to perhaps lie but really what good would that do. And besides it was hardly honourable behavior repaid for their rescue of him. No, honesty was best.

Now he had to concentrate on his English reply.

"I thank you. I am...Aurelien Vachot...aspirant...from the Revenant. The ship out there....which sink..no sunk...was Portugese, Santa Barbara. I know not if anyone else lived. Ummm, pardon for my English...not in practice much."

And that was effort enough to get out what with the salt water's effect on his throat, he once more coughed before continuing.

"I am French....not Portugese," he wanted to make certain they realized that, though if they knew of the Revenant, that and his French accent, they'd probably already figured it out.

Mitchell nodded to show he understood, memorizing the information. Aspirant was their version of an officer in training, wasn't it?

"We will take you back to our ship now. Don't worry - we are a very civilized lot, and there should be something warm to drink and dry clothes waiting. But since you are French, Monsieur, I must ask you to consider yourself a prisoner of war now - but I'm certain the Captain will be accepting your parole, should you want to offer it."

To prevent all misunderstandings, he repeated the last sentence in his best school French - hoping that somewhere in the middle between both languages, Vachot would get his meaning correctly. While he waited for the boy to reply, the lieutenant glanced up to the men in the rigging of the Terpsichore, but sofar nobody was signalling that they had spotted another survivor.

Post  Aurelien Vachot Mon Dec 30, 2013 4:07 am

The Englishman's next words only confirmed what Aurelien had thought. They were going to treat him fairly. He could expect a dry set of clothes and something warm for his belly. As of late all he'd swallowed was salt water and it did not set well with him needless to say.

"Mer...thank you," he stated his gratitude once again after almost slipping into French.

No sooner had the Englishman mentioned the necessary matter of him now being a military prisoner given the state of war which existed between their two nations, that the fellow then repeated it once more in very passable French.

Aurelien smiled, "Ahh, so you speak French even better than I speak English." His reply was in French then although he suddenly decided to say the rest in English, figuring he needed the practice if he was going to be amongst an English crew.

"Yes, I do understand. I will offer parole...of course. I have no..." he thought on the needed word then came up with it, "desire.. to make trouble for your captain."

It would be height of stupidity anyway, what could one person do alone on board an enemy vessel surrounded by a hostile crew. Duty did not mean suicide.

Mitchell grinned and admitted frankly:

"I memorized a few phrases in case I should ever need them. I am much oblidged to you that I do now and all that study was not in vain."

They had nearly reached Terpsychore's hull again and, spotting a midshipman, Mitchell shouted:

"Hoy, Mr. Kinsella! My respects to the Captain and Mr. Bush, and we have one living French aspirant wishing to give his parole. Permission to bring him on board? And then get some writing stuff and stand ready to take down the details of the sunk ship for the records."

The midshipman responded in turn. The news was relayed to Mr. Bush, which was a sure way to have the captain learn of the new arrival as well.

"Bring him aboard." Kinsella shouted back. "The captain will be informed of the parole." He delivered orders to the sailors that would now need to assist with return of the sailors on board with their cargo. A rope ladder was dropped for them to ascend, while the boat would be lashed up again.

"There we are. Can you climb up or should I call for a chair?"

Smith, who had pulled him out of the water in the first place, hovered, ready to assist if necessary.

Post  Aurelien Vachot Sat Jan 04, 2014 6:10 am

Now that he was sitting there in the boat, Aurelien suddenly realized he was shivering. It was summer so it was not necessarily cold but he'd been in the water for a long time, it had seemed like a week - though of course it had not been anywhere near that long. An exhausted mind was not a clear one.

Word was passed up to the English captain and permission secured for him to come on board. A rope ladder was lowered, the standard way in which crew re-embarked after any small boat duty. The English lieutenant gave him a choice, again kind of him.

"No, I can use the ladder, I am tired but not that weak," Aurelien forced a wane smile then stood up and grasped the rope.

Looking upward, he steeled himself to do the climb, it would not do to fail in front of all these English, it was now a matter of pride to get up there on his own. He slowly began the ascent as his limbs gave silent protest with each grasp and pull. Progress was slow but steady.

Cattling observed from above as their load was coming up the ladder to board the ship. Kinsella turned to the lieutenant of marines: "Sir, we'll need a few of your men,.. just as escort until he has given his parole to the captain." He doubted much was needed. The lad looked exhausted. He glanced towards Cattling as well and shouted to him. "Inform the surgeon, he will be receiving a patient soon."

The youth had spent far too long in the water and considering the damage to the planks that floated about him, he might have sustained additional injuries they've not yet seen.

What else was there to be done? Ah yes, another sailor was sent to fetch a woolen blanket in which they youth would be wrapped when he finally came over the railing, before he was escorted below.

He made it! He'd reached the top and a sailor helped him, he placed his bare feet upon the comforting feeling of a solid deck beneath him. From all directions there were eyes fixed on him, it was hardly surprising. It was rather unusual to pull someone from the sea and judging by the grim looks on some crew faces, they were by now aware he was one of the enemy not an Englishman. Still, they had been most decent so far, he retained optimism they would not change now.

A sailor padded up to him then held out a blanket which he took most gratefully, "Thank you."
The blanket that Mitchell had first given him was back down in the jolly boat as he could hardly climb with it about him. That English phrase he had a feeling he would be using a lot in the next few hours maybe even days. Besides, he was naturally polite, he'd been raised that way.

As he stood there then to await whatever they wished to do next, he wrapped the blanket around himself and dripped in place. Again he was glad it was summer and not winter. Of course had it been, he would have been dead by now.

Sewell nodded and detailed two Marines to accompany the young man. He looked at Mitchell, who was just climbing aboard again, and asked politely, indicating with a gesture that he would take charge of the Frenchman for the time being:

"With your permission, Mr. Mitchell?"

The second lieutenant nodded, turning away to give orders to secure the boat again, and the Marine officer continued:

"Get him to sickbay - out of the wind and where the surgeon can take a look. MacTavish, get the man a cup of tea, as soon as the cook has lit the stove again."

Post  Aurelien Vachot Fri Jan 10, 2014 4:00 am

Aurelien stood there dripping, wrapped in a blanket and listened to the men about him. They were aware he was French by now but he wondered if they all realized he could indeed understand English. The officer was giving instructions to take him to their sick bay and their surgeon, so he could be checked out. It all made perfect sense, it would have been what his own crew would have done for a washed up prisoner also. And the promised cup of tea sounded very welcome!

A marine beckoned him over and even addressed him as 'sir'. Aurelien nodded.

"Yes, thank you."

And now it was time to go below deck and see what the interior of an English ship was like. He was quite certain it wasn't much different than a French or Spanish one when it came right down to it. He obeyed the marine.

Post  Mathew De Guarde Tue Jan 14, 2014 8:52 pm

They had a moment's respite from working on the foremast's sails and had been sent off it anyway. A moment of respite and rest could be had below where the cold would not get to a person as much as on deck.

De Guarde was also pursued by curiosity and made his next turn to the surgeon's on account of that. He hoped to catch a glimpse of their new acquisition and see who it was that they've saved. He did see that the person had been alive upon the descending into the ship's belly.

Carefully peeking around 'the corner' he tried to catch a glimpse of the youth. He was young, that little piece of information he learned already before. He also had by now heard the rumours about how Hodgins the carpenter´s mate, Bottoms, and at first they said there were two more, they were all from another ship, but then someone mentioned - he heard him while on his way down to the surgeon's - that there could have been five altogether too. He did not know which bit of information was true, though if he had gone to see where they had been clapped in irons to wait the outcome of the storm, he would probably have been able to make sure.

Later, perhaps, when he had more time and opportunity.

July 17th Situation Hopeless and Getting Worse! - Page 2 Empty Re: July 17th Situation Hopeless and Getting Worse!

Post  Aurelien Vachot Sat Jan 18, 2014 5:44 am

The English doctor proceeded to give Aurelien a businesslike examination as the young Frenchman was his best docile self. Except for a few scratches and bruises, the boy was pronounced to have survived the ordeal without any serious injuries. Of course had he suffered a serious wound, he would have never lasted that long bobbing up and down the stormy sea. As it was he'd swallowed enough seawater during his watery misadventure but he would bounce back from that soon enough.

The doctor then departed for some other task but was immediately replaced by a smiling crewman bearing both a steaming mug of tea and an armful of clothing. Aurelien smiled right back, appreciating both offerings.

"Thank you," he made sure to say as he took both.

The fellow had a message for him too. Mr. Mitchell was telling him to come when ready in order to straighten his story? Now exactly what that meant, Aurelien was not sure? Or perhaps he was misunderstanding the English word? In truth his English was not the best and he hadn't practiced it in some time. Guess he would get in a lot of practice now.

"Yes, I will, thank you," he nodded then sipped the tea.

The man left and Aurelien decided to strip out of his soaked clothing and get into the nice warm dry ones. He tugged off the wet material, it sticking to him almost, throwing it all on a soggy pile. He had just managed to be partially dressed and was about to put on the loose cotton shirt in his hands when another Englishman, or rather his head, made a quick show around the corner. Aurelien nodded.

"Hello.."

De Guarde hesitated then stepped forward. " Hello." He tilted his head slightly, observing the lad. He was a survivor of the tempest and the cold, unpleasant sea. To De Guarde that was quite impressive.

"Can you understand me? Where are you from?" He inquired then straightening almost like a gentleman, though his garments were clearly those of a seaman, he added:" Hello, I am Mathew De Guarde. What is your name?"

His simple greeting seemed to put the other young Englishman at ease and the fellow stepped forward into the small room. He not only introduced himself but had lots of questions too. Aurelien smiled and did his best to answer.

"Yes, I can understand," he nodded.

"Oh, it is good to meet you, Mattieu DeGarde," even as Aurelien said the name he wondered if the lad might be at the very least of French background with such a last name? Perhaps from an old Hugenot family, so many of them fled France to England a century or more ago.

"Excuse please," he then readied the cotton shirt and fit it over his head and poked his arms into it then pulled it down his thin frame til he was once more covered.

"There, more proper, yes?" he smiled then introduced himself, "I am Aurelien....Aurelien Vachot, aspirant from the Revenant. I come from Harfleur, Normandie...you have heard of it, no?"

"Do not fret. I've been helping out here." He motioned to the sickbay. "For quite a while." He smiled and waited, untill the other youth was fully dressed. " Good to meet you, and glad to see you are well." He had thought at first the youth was Portuguese or Spanish, hearing from others what they have seen among the debris. It was clear however that he was instead a Frenchman.

Oddly, it did not diminish De Guarde's satisfaction at seeing the youth he had seen, alive and well on board. "I have heard of it yes. What happened?.. You were really lucky at being spotted but...what happened to the ship? It looked a wreck .." he hesitated and smiled. "I mean... the bits remaining." He was curious about the chap, and wondered briefly what rank an aspirant was. "Excuse me but..you are....like a midshipman?"

Aurelien had to admit, most of these English were a friendly enough sort, this young man was happy to meet him even. Well, their nations might be at war but it was good to know gentlemanly conduct was still followed. Sadly it was all savagery between the French and their Spanish and Portuguese enemies.

"I am most pleased to meet you also," Aurelien smiled back.

The Englishman was asking about the sunk ship, oh he probably was confused by Aurelien's introduction, something the young Frenchman aimed to rectify.

"No, that ship...the ship that sunk, it was not the Revenant. My apology if I confused you. It was the Santa Barbara, a Portuguese merchant ship. We....the Revenant had ...." he paused trying to remember the proper English word then gave up and went for something easier, "taken it. My captain was sending it back with a ...."

Again he wished he could recall the English word he wanted.

"Gift crew? No, that is not it. I'm sorry," he shrugged.

"Why did the ship sink?" De Guarde inquired then corrected the other lad quickly on the use of the word "I think you mean a prize crew.. for a prize ship, one you've taken and hope to get prize money from." He explained and nodded in the affirmative.

"Did you damage it when taking her or was it the storm?" He asked shifting closer and taking a seat, not too far from the other. He was dressed in sailor slops and barefoot, though his posture clearly suggested that he was not the usual seaman.

He had a perfect excuse - now that they were temporarily not needed - to see where the lad was at. He'd seen him disappear in the direction of the sickbay and there it was, where he was going now.

Passing the marine his concern was presented as that for the youth that they fished out. Curiosity joined with that, he could have claimed and since he was the look out, he had more right to it than some of the others.

Cattling peered around the corner then gave a light:" Hello." Of a greeting to the two boys. He had been just where he had expected him to be.

"Good to see you alive." He said with a gruff but a tone that was pleasant enough. "You'll be needed." He said to De Guarde though. "So don't tally." With that quick appearance and looking satisfied, the man turned and left.

Post  Aurelien Vachot Thu Jan 30, 2014 5:37 am

"Oh, prize! Yes, that is the word!" Aurelien nodded, why did he not remember that one.

The young man wanted to know what had happened though that ended up with the loss of the vessel and seemingly everyone else but Vachot himself. Aurelien was willing to be honest about it all.

"No, we took the ship without any fighting. They bring their..ahh, haul their colors down when we got next to them. So my captaine, he makes decision to send it back with a PRIZE crew to a port in France. There were very few of us on the ship but the Portugese had given us no trouble so..." he shrugged narrow shoulders.

"Then the storm came and...for why..I know not but the Portuguese they rise up against us. So with the wind and the waves, we have to fight with them now too. It was too much," he sighed.

"Well...again I do not know the details but a fire started down below. It should not have ....umm, moved...no, spread so fast," he paused perplexed then continued, "but it did. And then ...finally...we abandon ship..."

He figured he didn't need to explain anymore, the Englishman was smart enough to figure it all out from there. Just then there was an interruption from another man who stuck his head into the room. After a quick and decently friendly greeting he pointed out that the young Frenchman was expected elsewhere, Aurelien figured it would be a meeting with the captain or at least a ranking officer.

"Yes sir, I am ready now," Aurelien called back even as the man left then glanced to De Guarde, "I should not keep them waiting, no?"

"Oh.. a ship just seems to love to catch flame." De Guarde murmured imagining the fate of the vessel. Well, the others had been much less fortunate than this boy and could not brag that they have survived not one but two adverse situations. That they spotted him was near miracle. He smiled rather proudly of himself then blinked as Aurelien called back.

"Oh no.. that was not for you." He said hastly, his smile fading. "Though you will be called to the captain soon. Just tell him what you've told me....and be certain to do as he asks." He nodded slowly. "And it should set you right.. And.. I will be around, should you anything not from the officers.."
