Re: 8th June; On-the-Job Training
"No? Shame, 'cause a foretopman's gotta be tall," Chase remarked with a deliberately neutral expression.
The effect, however, was promptly ruined by Dyer, who added, "Aye. That's so he can look down on the lads what're in the other mast crews."
"I heared that, you big-headed rascals," Tim Ha'penny called across the boat tier. Chase simply grinned. It wasn't his fault Ha'penny was a mizzentopman.

Re: 8th June; On-the-Job Training
Terry giggled at Dyer's immediate retaliation and put up a hand to straighten his hat.
"So... howdya 'splain Young Oates's bein' so much shorter'n you then?" he asked, indicating a young seaman just coming up behind them.

Re: 8th June; On-the-Job Training
"What, him?" Davey Hobbs grinned. "He's only with us 'cause his da tole us he'd be."
Chase took the tale smoothly up. "Aye. What Ol' Oates says usually goes."

Re: 8th June; On-the-Job Training
Terry dared enough to stick his tongue out at them - and prepared to duck in case anyone went to box his ears for the impertinence. "Wasn't what I said. I said, how'd you explain his bein' shorter'n you, not how'd he get to be a foretopman."
Re: 8th June; On-the-Job Training
"Oh that? It's 'cause of him not likin' ship's biscuit," Chase replied. Young Oates simply smirked.
There was a snort from Dyer. "That an' he weren't always in the foretop, so it's on'y fair for him to be Tom-thumb."

Re: 8th June; On-the-Job Training
"Wot're ya tellin' t'boy now?" Thom Boyles enquired, ranging casually alongside. "Fillin' 'is pore 'ead fulla wild stories, I t'ink!"

Re: 8th June; On-the-Job Training
"Dunno as anyone likes ship's biscuit, 'zackly," Terry said doubtfully. He didn't himself, exactly, which wasn't to say he didn't eat it of course.
"They bin showin' me some knots, Mister Boyles," Terry said loyally. He was a little nervous of the petty officers, of course, and a little nervous of Boyles anyway - he was so very black! He'd never seen a black man before coming aboard Terpsy.

Re: 8th June; On-the-Job Training
Chase and Dyer exchanged smirks but said nothing.
The big petty officer, on the other hand, seemed amused. "Learnin' ya knots, issit? 'Ow manny they teached ya yet?"
Re: 8th June; On-the-Job Training
"Um." He had to count on his fingers. He knew the bowline, the running bowline, a bowline on a bight, the sheet bend, a clove hitch, the timber hitch, the reef knot (of course) and the carrick bend... sort of. He'd also been shown the rolling hitch, though he couldn't tie that one yet.
"Um... eight. Though one of 'em's only sorta. 'M still learnin' it, I mean."

Re: 8th June; On-the-Job Training
Boyles seemed unsurprised. "A goodly few, t'at. Can ya do 'em wit' yer eyes shut?"
"Here, Boyles," Chase cut in, struggling to look disapproving. "Better fit he learn 'em, normal-like, 'fore he tries anythin' fancy."
Re: 8th June; On-the-Job Training
Terry shook his head. He'd never tried that - he was still having to think what bit of string went where, for each knot, after all.
"Ain't that good attem yet, Mister Boyles," he said doubtfully. They were all teasing him again, weren't they?

Re: 8th June; On-the-Job Training
"T'en t'ey ain't teachin' ya right." Boyles shook his head. "A good seaman needs t'know 'is knots by feelin', 'cuz t'ere ain't always light t'see by, y'know."
Chase rolled his eyes, aware that Boyles was correct but unwilling to admit as much.
Re: 8th June; On-the-Job Training
There wasn't anything Terry could say to that, not really. He thought they were doing all right, and it wasn't as though he knew the knots well enough to even begin to work out how to tie them if he couldn't see what he was doing. "Um."
Re: 8th June; On-the-Job Training
"He's right, though," Davey Hobbs said. "Tyin' a Flemish bend, or sommat, in the blindin' dark's no mean trick, it ain't."
There was a snort from Chase. "But you needs to know a knot top to bottom 'fore you can do any of that. The nipper's nowheres near that, is he, an' he can't be 'xpected t'be. He's on'y just started his learnin'!"

Re: 8th June; On-the-Job Training
Terry looked up at Chase and shifted a bit closer to him. He had no intention of trying to tie anything with his eyes closed, not yet, not in front of all these grown-up Able Seamen, anyway.
Not a chance!
Not a chance!
Re: 8th June; On-the-Job Training
"Excuses, ever' bit of it," declared Boyles with a smile. "But t'ere's always somet'in' to learn. D'ya know yer ropes, nipper?"
"Course he does," Chase said but Boyles waved a hand to shut him up.
Re: 8th June; On-the-Job Training
"I knows the braces an' halyards an' most the stays," Terry said, wondering again how he was ever going to remember everything - there was such a lot to know.
Re: 8th June; On-the-Job Training
"I can't... I can't name 'em 'ccordin' to their places in the pin-rail," Terry said hastily, hoping to ward off the Inquisition a bit. "But I knows where they's at to go to for... for tackin' an' all."
Re: 8th June; On-the-Job Training
"Now c'mon, Boyles," Chase began again.
Boyles ignored him. "T'ey ain't teachin' ya right. C'mon, nipper." He moved toward the fore prinrail, leaving an irritated-looking Chase in his wake.
Re: 8th June; On-the-Job Training
"They are," Terry said loyally. "There's jus' such a powerful lot to learn, is all!" He still followed the petty officer to the pinrail, though, wondering how he was ever going to remember everything.
Re: 8th June; On-the-Job Training
It did not appear as though Boyles was listening to him. "D'ya know which o' these goes where?" He was pointing at the foremost lines in the pinrail.
Re: 8th June; On-the-Job Training
"Braces," Terry answered promptly. He knew this bit. "Fore royal, fore t'gallant, foretops'l, forecourse," he said, pointing at each in turn, after squinting up at the white canvas towering above them to make sure that there weren't any sails set that he didn't know.
Re: 8th June; On-the-Job Training
The petty officer stuffed a hand into his trouser pocket. "An' t'em aft of 'em?"
Re: 8th June; On-the-Job Training
"Halyards, sir," Terry said, the honorific slipping out automatically. "Royal, t'gallant', topsail, course, the same's the braces."
