6th August - Par un Dimanche au Soir
By late afternoon, an uneasy peace had settled over the Augustin household. A French cavalry officer, older and superior in rank to Tibodo, had taken the room next to the irritable lieutenant. The captain, a man named something like Bailarjuan, whose servant seemed to be named Perro, had demonstrated himself to be a family man by showing las Augustinas two diminutive portraits that he carried of his wife and daughter, backed with plaits of their hair worked into wonderful designs. Thus Augustin was somewhat reassured that the man would have no untoward intentions toward Maria Dolores, and although some houses had been given over to looting, surely no common soldier would force his way into the housing of two officers, particularly with Perro as watchdog at the front door, brushing his officer's coat.
And so, having retreated to the courtyard to bury whatever valuables his family possessed, Augustin found himself at leisure to smoke a pipe. If there was to be plundering, he had best use up his tobacco before it could be stolen.

Re: 6th August - Par un Dimanche au Soir
The day had passed in a sort of haze that was only in part due to his fever. The French had come back. To Talavera. Even after watching the cavalry ride through, even after talking to that officer, he couldn't seem to grasp it. He'd been on edge, almost jumpy since the morning, to the point that he'd more than once had to fight the temptation to fish out the little bottle from his pocket. But perhaps that was for the best just now; he'd been running on little more than nerves and adrenaline for so long, if he stopped being afraid, he had half a notion he might just stop altogether. And he had a promise to keep.
Things had been quiet for a while when he finally judged it safe to leave Charcot at the window and slip out into the courtyard. The carpenter was there, smoking a pipe, and after a brief hesitation, Paol crossed the small space toward him. He ought to tell him what he'd found out from the officer, for what it was worth.
"Señor," he greeted him cautiously, "How did you fare? Is everything alright?"

Re: 6th August - Par un Dimanche au Soir
The carpenter looked up with suspicious alarm as soon as the French soldier came out of the Castillo house, but then he recognized him as the one who had shouted at Don Tibodo - the good fellow, Paol, with the fever. He nodded a greeting to him. He was a little surprised when the soldier crossed over to speak to him, and he could not understand most of it, but he heard "bien" at the end of a question.
"Ah," he began, shrugging. Then he did not know how to continue, since the young man would not understand. "It's so-so. There's a captain in our house." And that was explanation enough. "How is your fever? Sit down." He gestured to the wooden stool next to his sharpening stone.

Re: 6th August - Par un Dimanche au Soir
"Another officer? Jesus..." He sank down gratefully onto the stool. At least having two officers in their house would keep them reasonably safe from looting, and perhaps this captain was more reasonable than Thibaudeau.
But there'd been a question in there somewhere. Something about his fever? It was Paol's turn to shrug now. "Así así," he repeated with a faint smile. "Thank you."
His expression quickly sobered and he added, "The infantry will come tomorrow."

The carpenter leaned forward with an anxious frown. "The infantry? What?"

"Ah--tomorrow. The infantry come tomorrow." He fumbled helplessly for a moment, then pointed up at the sky -- the sun had long since passed behind the roofs surrounding the courtyard -- and made a circular motion with his hand. "Tomorrow."

Re: 6th August - Par un Dimanche au Soir
One of the words sounded familiar. Something he'd heard in farewells. Could they have meant 'until tomorrow'? He didn't know how else to explain it, so he simply nodded. "Si. Tomorrow."
Re: 6th August - Par un Dimanche au Soir
The carpenter was at a loss. What would that mean for his family? But Augustin was a man of few words. He muttered something quietly, and then held out his tobacco pouch to thank the soldier for warning him.

Re: 6th August - Par un Dimanche au Soir
Paol reached out his hand automatically before realizing he was not sure what he was doing, or what he was supposed to do, and glanced up questioningly at the carpenter.
Re: 6th August - Par un Dimanche au Soir
Oh, of course, the soldier didn't have a pipe to put the tobacco in. His mind full of distractions and fears, Augustin was not thinking clearly. With a shrug he put the pouch back in his pocket and offered the soldier his pipe instead.

Re: 6th August - Par un Dimanche au Soir
Paol's brows all but disappeared into the mess of curls which overhung his forehead, but he accepted the pipe from Augustin and, after an uncertain moment's contemplation, put it to his mouth and inhaled deeply.
Christ... He closed his eyes, holding the breath for a few heartbeats before slowly releasing it. He took another long pull, then handed the pipe back to the carpenter. "Gracias."

Re: 6th August - Par un Dimanche au Soir
Augustin smiled, though wearily, at the soldier's appreciation. "You don't have a pipe?"

Re: 6th August - Par un Dimanche au Soir
The word for pipe he recognized, but he wasn't sure about the rest. One of the words sounded like 'your'. Something about his own pipe, then? A faintly rueful smile touched his face and he shrugged. "The English."
Re: 6th August - Par un Dimanche au Soir
The carpenter nodded with a sympathetic shrug. Taking a prisoner's pipe seemed rather spiteful, but that was war, he supposed. Tomorrow a soldier might try to take his. He had best enjoy it while he could, and the wine as well. He offered the pipe back to the Frenchman and turned his attentions to the bottle at his side.
"Wine?" he asked after relishing a mouthful. "Good for fever." He was drinking the wine so the French wouldn't steal it, and yet here he was offering to share it with a Frenchman. But he would rather share it voluntarily with this fellow, who was a farmer and respectful to elders and kind to young girls, than have it taken forcibly by thieves.

Re: 6th August - Par un Dimanche au Soir
Paol looked up, surprised a second time by the carpenter's generosity. "Ah—Si. Gracias," he stammered, trading the pipe for the bottle. He swallowed a mouthful, expecting the acrid, bitter taste he'd grown accustomed to from Spanish wine, and was pleasantly surprised. "It's good," he remarked appreciatively, setting the bottle down between them.
There was a noise which sounded something like a small, ill tempered dog, and Martita emerged from the house. "Papa!" she cried, catching sight of her father, and came bounding across the stones. She did not slow when she drew close, but ran straight into him and threw her arms around his neck.

"Ooof!" Augustin exclaimed softly as she barreled into him. He wrapped his arms around her and held her a little closer and a little longer than usual. "Is that my little girl? I thought there was a dog coming to attack me."

Martita's giggle was muffled by her father's shirt and she pulled away just a bit. "I was talking to Señor Dog," she told him, as if this should have been obvious. "I told him 'Don't steal anything or I'll bite you! With my sharp teeth! Grrr!"

Augustin laughed and kissed the top of her head, holding onto her tightly again. "Good girl." He handed the pipe back to the Frenchman to free up his hands, and explained "The man who is servant to the captain is named Dog. You know a dog? Martita, show him what a dog is."

Re: 6th August - Par un Dimanche au Soir
"Dog," Martita enunciated slowly, then proceeded to bark and pant in enthusiastic imitation of the animal in question.
Laughter caught Paol by surprise and he half choked on a breath of pipe smoke. "Perro," he repeated carefully once he had recovered.
Martita seemed to accept his attempt, albeit reluctantly. "Señor Dog is working downstairs. I watch him, but he is boring. What are you doing?" she demanded, trying to climb into her father's lap.

"I'm smoking a pipe and drinking some wine," her father answered simply, pulling her up into his lap. Then he sighed. "Your slave Paol says more French soldiers will come tomorrow."

"More?" Martita made a face. "Will they have to stay in our house too?" She looked accusingly at Paol. "Why are more soldiers coming? We already have soldiers. Lots of soldiers. Three! Just in our house! And Manuela had three in her house!" she continued, oblivious to the pained expression on the soldier's face. "Can I smoke too?"

Re: 6th August - Par un Dimanche au Soir
"No, of course you can't smoke. Smoking isn't for little girls. And if soldiers ask to stay in our house, we'll just get Señor Dog to tell them we don't have any more room. All right?"

Re: 6th August - Par un Dimanche au Soir
With a resigned sigh, she nestled closer against her father's chest. "Alright." Then, after a moment's pause, "Can I have wine?"
Paol smiled, watching the two of them. "You're lucky," he said suddenly.
