The midshipman eyed the young marine sceptically. He did not leave an impression of an able seaman, but rather a very unhappy landlubber who would have given anything to be allowed a trip to land right now. He turned to Sewell and nodded sharply. "Good." His eyes were again on the masts. The winds have increased to the point that it seemed all sail would need to be taken in, or else risk damage either to them, to the masts or worse.

"I'll see you...don't loose the boy. "He said quickly, already turning to head off to fulfill their new task before masks would splinter onto the deck.

"I can see that," Thompson replied, unable to keep from raising an eyebrow. "Any partic'lar reason you're comin' on deck in a storm?"

"I don' want ter drown in the wooden coffin.." Whyte answered quickly readjusting his grip where he might not tarnish a corporal's uniform. He appeared less convinced that on top of a wooden coffin drowning was impossible. "...is this our end?"

"Ain't nobody goin' to drown, not in this here bit of a blow," Thompson said. "Terpsy's the best found ship in the Navy. But you'd best stay on the gun deck if you don't want to get washed overboard."

"Report to the pumps. Betters your chances to stay afloat. Also a big piece of wood to grab onto", Sew suggested with deceptive mildness. He wriggled the shark he still held.

Whyte watched the two for a few moments then took a step to the side. He would let them pass and then, he might retreat somewhere. Neither of the men gave him an order on where he was supposed to be, which meant that he had a choice, some leeway.

The midshipmen he could hardly hear, and most of the times the wind was too strong and too loud, with the dangerous creaking of Terpsy, to allow hearing anything at all. They did look as though they were trying to raise their voices, as the lieutenants that watched over them. The ship was trying its best to stay afloat. Still, it looked all too much like she was just trying!

"Aye, sir - down below." Thompson was having to shout to make himself heard over the storm. "Whyte, pumps. Now!"

He turned back to the officer. "Orlop deck - I'll show you, sir. Might need a hand with that'n an' all!" he added, with a wry look at the shark, a look that probably could not be seen through the pouring rain.

Whyte remained out of the way. he would follow below right as the two officers cleared the gangway. He did not want to be in the way, nor trip one, nor did he think he was entitled to go before the two officers. It was just not the order of things. Holding fast so that he would not be washed away while he waited fro the two men to clear the shark, he looked back over his shoulder. He saw the number of tails now bound, but there were still some waiting their turn. The noise was terrible and made him feel that the ship might just break apart at any moment! He gulped.

Sew took a better grip on the shark - even though the skin wasn't slippery, the form was. He carefully balanced it down the gangway, but even his usual grace and sure-footedness couldn't prevent him from overbalancing when then ship suddenly lurched. With no hands free to compensate, the lieutenant was forced to cover the last bit in one big step - only different from a fall in that he managed to stand at the end. He managed not to knock down Thompson himself, but he couldn't prevent the shark from slamming into the poor Corporal's back.

"Apologies!", he muttered, inwardly resolving to throw all future uninvited gifts from the sea straight back in.

While the marines were still occupied with their shark, there suddenly was a unexpected moment of quiet. From somewhere below and to the right, only a single wobbly baritone broke it with a slurred:

"... these three drunken maid..."

Then the next wave rushed closer, someone called out on the upper deck and the usual noises of a ship in a storm drowned out the drunken singer.

"Flamin' hell!" Thompson ejaculated, startled by the unexpected weight that whacked him from behind, nearly jerking him off his feet. Now, if this was a calm day -!

If this was a calm day, they wouldn't have the damn thing at all, of course.

"Beg pardon, sir," he said, realising he had come within an ace of actually swearing at the officer - never a good idea, even on the best of days.

"D'you want a hand with that, sir?" he added, feeling faintly ridiculous at letting the officer carry it unaided - especially with the weather as arsy-versy as it was today!

"Dammit," he added, hearing what sounded suspiciously like a group of drunken revellers. "Where'd they get the rum?"

The young marine blinked. He may have imagined it, with all the howling and the cold and the creaking and the shouts , drowned in the rest, but he could swear he might have heard a man that sang. The man in fact, that sang as if he had not exactly had his mind of sound and sober type.

He coughed and spluttered as water withdrew and then tried to listen in. If there was a drunken man.. he was under no conditions allowed to come on deck or else he would be swept away and drown!

He began the quick descend. He was small but determined!

Felling the curse to be very appropriate, Sew only nodded his acceptance of the apology.

"Even worse to carry by two - just keep the way clear. Whyte, locate that drunkard. Careful if there are more!"

He shrugged.

"If they'm drunk, where'd they get it from, that's what I'd like to know, sir," Thompson said darkly. He would be checking on the sentry at the spirit room as soon as... ah. They'd pass him on the way to the carpenter's store.

Perfect.

"Spirit room, five finger prize from the French ship, smuggled aboard."

Sew listed what he could think of in order of likeliness.

"Find, not confront, Whyte!"

He was relatively sure that many drunken sailors would not be intimidated by Whyte into submitting to their arrest quietly, so he prefered to have the boy not do anything of that kind alone.

"Yes, sir!" Whyte shouted back and then he was gone. If there were more than one sailor that got drunk he would find them, each and every one of them. Then they would be clapped in irons and they would be taken to be punished later. Just because they were doing what any sane man thinking they would die moments later, might think of doing, it did not mean it was right. The ship could succumb to the weather because they were not in the right place at the right time! To Whyte this was inexcusable!

Further down the line, the man standing sentry at the spirits room, would have been found leaning against the wooden wall, as if asleep. Rather than standing his massive frame had been finding the support of wall and floor, and another recent tilt had just tipped him further to the side.

The door that lead into the spirit room was closed.

He seemed very young to Thompson's way of thinking... though he'd probably been very much the same when he was new to the Corps.

"He'll settle down soon enough, I reckon, sir," he said to the officer, with a shrug. "No reason why he shouldn't become a good Marine."

The man outside the spirit room was not a good Marine, however; he seemed to be asleep.

Thompson sighed. "Atten-SHUN!"

Sew nodded in agreement and hitched the fish higher again. When he saw the sprawled Gunn, he sighed, however, and put the shark down onto the floor and straightened into a proper officer's stance. He hated when something like this came up.

Gunn did not so much as stir at the shout. A few moments later it appeared as either the man had actually moved, or the ship's own tilt had caused the body to shift. Either way the man turned a little. If one took a closer inspection the bump on the top of his head, under all the hair, with the faintest trace of blood, could also be visible.

The man was still breathing, which was some relief.

That was not good. Not by any stretch of the imagination. Thompson was very conscious of the officer's presence behind him and that this was his first real test as a Corporal.

He unhooked the lantern so he could take a closer look, not an easy thing to do with the ship's violent motion. He was still warm, which was a good sign. Still breathing - even better.

There was a lump on the back of Gunn's head, and Thompson's hand came away a little sticky.

"Out cold, sir," he reported, looking back at the officer. "Bin clouted from behind, I think, though how the bugger got behind him is anyone's guess."

The lantern light gleamed off something on the deck, and the Marine let out a breath he didn't know he was holding. "Well, his musket's still here, anyhow, at least, sir."

Sew took a step over the unconscious man and tried to open the door to the spirit room. It gave way easily, and the lieutenant unhooked a lamp and took it inside. Testing the caskets inside, he stated:

"All unopened ones are here. That open one should be half full. Seems emptier. Gunn coming around or should Whyte run for the surgeon?"

C'mon, Gunn, wakey wakey - show a leg," he said, shaking the comatose Marine's shoulder.

Gunn uttered a quiet groan and muttered something in gaelic. He stretched one leg out slowly. It was then that he seemed to get somewhat more aware for his eyes opened and then widened at the sight of the corporal. They might just have grown wider when he heard the officer and a thrust backwards - attempt to straighten - made him curse in his tongue again, for the bruise was struck yet again.

He slowly struggled to his feet, though attempted to be quicker anyway. He was not quite certain whether the ship was tilting and moving at odd ends or whether it was all just in his head. "Corp'ral... " He had to steady himself and yet he looked wildly to see where his musket was at, remembering he should have had it, and he should have stood sentry and that was ..rather awkward right now. He glanced to the side and saw the door open.

That was becoming more than just awkward. Worse.
