4th July: Responding to Invitation.
An outing, he said. Serviceable clothing, he said. Assuming George's constant trouble with messy clothing and Torrington's propensity for sarcasm, he would be better off putting on his dress uniform. It may cause some eyebrows to be raised, but never particularly cared for such things. In fact, it was fun when people raised eyebrows at him.
He went forth to meet Torrington, thinking that perhaps he fashion for such tight breeches was a little misguided. Sometimes he was convinced it was doing things to his blood supply.

Re: 4th July: Responding to Invitation.
Torrington was waiting for him immaculately turned out in his blue dress uniform, a virginal white cravat and a dress cloak over his arm. He had even taken the trouble to secure his cravat with a diamond pin.
When he saw Hunter, he formaly bowed, obviously having no trouble at all with the very well-fitting breeches.
"Captain Hunter. I'm honoured that you wil join me tonight!"

Re: 4th July: Responding to Invitation.
"Of course you are, Torrington. The unrestrained red of my uniform sets off your calm and refined Engineer's dress to advantage."
Hunter noticed a diamond pin and smirked. "Are we going a-wooing then?"

Re: 4th July: Responding to Invitation.
"No, my dear friend, we are going to see a wooing."
He looked Hunter up and down with a twinkle in his eyes.
"I must say, the restrains placed upon it by green riverweed did not do it credit - without it, you look much more dashing than I do."

Re: 4th July: Responding to Invitation.
'Well, really, Torrington, you have some peculiar tastes. I must admit I never found it interesting to watch a courtship. And if I do look dashing, surely we should put that to good use?'

Re: 4th July: Responding to Invitation.
"I intent to. As you already have pointed out, my somewhat understated uniform shows to advantage in contrast to yours, your golden lace gives us glamour, while your status as ADC to the commander-in-chief will give us standing."
He had managed to organize a phaeton for tonight - or rather the Spanish version of one - and ushered Hunter towards it.
"We have a few miles to go, but I hope you will like watching this courtship - it promises to be very amusing!"

'Very well, I shall place my trust in you.'
Hunter allowed himself to be ushered into the carriage, settling in the seat gingerly.
'Do you ever find that the more formal the wear the less practical the breeches are?"

Re: 4th July: Responding to Invitation.
The corner of Edward's mouth quivered.
"It depends on your definition of 'practical'. You will have to admit that they show off your leg to perfection. If you were hanging out for an heiress, that certainly would be helpful."
He tossed the soldier who had held the horse a coin and released the break.
"I must apologize - this turnout could be better, but while it is easy to come by a coach here, four or even two matching horses are nearly impossible to find."

Re: 4th July: Responding to Invitation.
"Please, Torrington, it's been a long time I have bothered about such things,' Hunter waved away Torrington's apologies.
'If I were hanging out for an heiress, Torrington, then perhaps this would be practical, however when I talked of practicality, I really meant one's ability to sit and to walk without having to worry that one's clothes will come apart at the seams."

Re: 4th July: Responding to Invitation.
Edward deadpanned: "I will certainly not cavil if you should choose to wear less perfectly cut breeches ... it can only add to the impression my own legs can make."
He guided the horse at a brisk pace down the road towards the next settlement.
Even more seriously, he added:
"And of course I had the forethought to bring a cloak, should my own garnments find themselves unequal to their task."

Re: 4th July: Responding to Invitation.
"Sit and walk. In contrast to my usual wet buckskins, this satin will not feel cold even with holes in the sides."
Another vehicle, belonging to a native farmer, came towards them. Without slowing, Edward steered close to the edge of the road, tipping the whip to his hat in passing greeting.

Re: 4th July: Responding to Invitation.
George smiled vaguely in the direction of the farmer. 'Frankly, Torrington, I suggest you neither get your breeches wet nor treat them so holes appear. It would look highly indecent."

Re: 4th July: Responding to Invitation.
"If I do not get them wet, I don't get into them, which would look even more undecent!", Edward retorted. The road was clear and in decent repair now, and he dropped the reins, letting the lively carriage horse have its head.
With a quizzical smile, he said:
"And here I thought all the ADCs wore dress uniform all the time, danced with all the signorias, and generally lived the life of exquisit dandies, and here I find one who does not like his dress uniform. Are you sure you do not want to give up this live and go back to your regiment?"

Re: 4th July: Responding to Invitation.
"My dear, you clearly don't know your Commander-in-Chief. I doubt he would mind the signorinas if that did not interfere with duties, but I very much doubt I would get away with strutting around like a peacock." Hunter sighed.
"I have to admit, the thought has crossed my mind, but since my regiment is not with the army here, I would be missing all the fun!"

Re: 4th July: Responding to Invitation.
"Don't do it then. It would be such a sad loss. Life would be dull and dreary and drap without you."
Torrington assumed such a mournful expression that it wanted only tears to make him appear like his best friend had died. And even those slowly began to gather in his eyes.

Re: 4th July: Responding to Invitation.
Hunter leaned over and slapped Torrington's knee, just hard enough to sting.
'Stop making a spectacle of yourself!'

Re: 4th July: Responding to Invitation.
"Awww, but I just wanted to gradually ease you into tonight's pleasure!"
Edward grinned and blinked the tears away.
"We are nearly there, so don your most respectable persona! I have assured the mayor that my guest would be of the highest consequence and a perfect English gentleman!"

Re: 4th July: Responding to Invitation.
'Oh, well, if it is respectable you want... Shall we have a little wager, Torrington? I shall don the persona of a respectable English officer that a mayor will expect to meet, should I slip even once, I lose. And if I don't, then I, of course, win."

Re: 4th July: Responding to Invitation.
Edward's eyes gleamed appreciatively.
"I could of course point out that it is unlikely that you would have survived under the eagle eye of our esteemed commander if you could not support such a role for a certain length of time, but where would be the fun in that? What shall we wager?"

Re: 4th July: Responding to Invitation.
'Oh, dear, if only you knew how many times I was convinced he would strangle me himself...," Hunter shuddered.
"Well, well. Money is boring. It has to be something that causes at least some inconvenience. Oh, should I win, you will teach me to draw."

Re: 4th July: Responding to Invitation.
"Depending on your aptitute, that will either be a great pleasure or the reason for my departure from the peninsula!", Edward muttered darkly.
"But agreed. If I should win ... you will have to behave perfectly at any other function of my choosing."

Re: 4th July: Responding to Invitation.
Edward solemnly shook it.
"I hope you don't believe that I will make it easy on you tonight, though."
He grinned and turned into a small town, obviously knowing his way around well enough to find without fault one of the larger plazas.
"Remember - you engaged to be the perfect officer and gentleman all the times - whether the mayor is looking or not!"

Re: 4th July: Responding to Invitation.
"Of course, my dear, let's see if you have imagination enough to come up with something that will shake my façade". Hunter assumed a less relaxed position on his seat, back perfectly straight, face suddenly growing serious.
