Re: Over the Hills?
It seems that pretty much everyone has dropped out of playing anything to do with the bridge on the British side because they don't agree with stuff, which leaves me on my own, and I'm not too happy with being the only one with a PC character... especially as I've kind of lost interest myself after the way the debate got so heated.
At this point, I don't know that I've got anything to say that's going to be of much use, speaking purely as a player.

Re: Over the Hills?
The rat poison solution (or: what was in the cask of the Spanish waggoner at the beginning of the 'Holding a Bridge' thread):
The cask did indeed contain a selection of rat poisons or rodent repellents of the time.
The sausages contained poison, mostly arsenic or cyanide, and scrap meat to attract the rats.
The plant parts in the sacks with barley were from different varieties of Helleborus and Veratrum album (false hellebore). Black (true) and white (false) hellebore were known for their toxic properties and used as common household poison as well as for medicinal purposes. Once again, the barley was to lure in the rodents.
Dried laurel leaves stuffed into the entrance of their burrows were supposed to prevent mice from getting out.
The most charming idea lies behind the sand: Mixed with corn (probably meant was seed corn), it would prevent rodents from burrowing there, because it would get into their ears.
(I have no idea how effective any of these methods are, by the way.)

Re: Over the Hills?
All the things you say about the rat poison sound reasonable enough to me, I admit to knowing almost nothing about such stuff. However, that isn't the problem in the thread, it's having any British show up. So I guess this plot is over.
Now I guess we wait til summer for the big battle then.

Re: Over the Hills?
It was not meant as solution, just as explanation for the strange collection of items. I thought I'd post it here where it had some connection with the thread it is referring to. Sorry for the confusion.
You could of course make a British PC/NPC and advance the British part of the thread yourself. Then people probably would play along.

Re: Over the Hills?
Aiee, please do not make us wait until summer for a battle. I myself am not crazy about battle threads, but I know they are part of the big draw for RPGs about war, and lack of excitement may be why players keep drifting away.
(I'm just looking forward to Talavera prisoner stuff, myself.)
PS - Wow, that's cool about the rat poison! Especially the sand. How strange!
Edit: Right. Gfic, you will get your battle, even if it just ends up being you and me. WE FIGHT.

Re: Over the Hills?
The way things stand now, I vote the British time-skip to the actual fight, and then blow the bridge up.
If people want the majority of French forces already there (must admit to not keeping up with the French threads!) then maybe that would be for the best, rather than dragging it out too long.

Re: Over the Hills?
Doesn't matter to me, I can go with either way at this point. Whatever works for those interested in still doing it.
But yes, I'm for timejumping to the battle.

Re: Over the Hills?
Outis and I wrote some riflemen scoping it out and they're ready to report back to Vickery. Will that work? Then Vickery can get everyone to go over the hill and attack?

Re: Over the Hills?
I am going to draw a line under this conversation.
Firstly: the British will timeskip to arrive at the bridge. They will number in force Vickery's company and a couple of light guns (I think that anyone who has PCs outside of this has decided to drop out of the thread.)
Secondly: Unless I am mistaken, the full French force is at the bridge, so no messengers need be sent.
Thirdly: There is a skirmish or some sort of fight which the British will - eventually! - win, allowing them to set charges and blow the bridge. Seviere is mortally wounded during this fight.
Fourthly: Charges are set and the bridge is blown up, the British and French return to their own army (this last march may well not be played out and will be understood to have happened).
The British march up to the bridge will occur off-screen, anything written already with regards to this will be archived, unless anyone strongly wants to play it out?
Edit If only 30 or so French are at the bridge, then I will have it so only half (if that) of Vickery's company goes on this expedition. Even numbers and all. (His Company musters about 88/90 men, so half of that would be about 44 men or so, which would make the numbers roughly equal without any more faffing about.)
If anyone has anything else to add, state your points clearly and in a calm, rational manner. I will then modify this plan based on that, because otherwise we run the risk, again, of plotting in committee, which is why things went so badly wrong earlier in this thread.

Re: Over the Hills?
In the current French thread, there is only the 30 man detachment at the bridge but if someone playing in the thread would prefer the French to have garrisioned it more strongly including cannon, I have no objections.
I have been rping Sgt. Brunet running things for the detachment but again if someone wants to rp a French officer or two commanding bigger units, go for it.
I do have a question just out of curiousity.
When are the British launching the assault? At the dawn of a new day or late in the 19th? I am not sure it's that important one way or the other but like I said, I'm curious.

Re: Over the Hills?
Oh Lord. It'd make more sense, I think, for it to be in the early morning, just before dawn - because then they've got the daylight to set charges &c &c.

Can we say it's early morning now, then?

Ok, I think we're battle ready now. (Hope it's ok that I made them already go over the hill. If not, I can change it.)

Re: Over the Hills?
Yes, early morning makes perfect sense to me too. Try and take one's opponent by surprise.
Sounds good!

Re: Over the Hills?
And I've made it so Holding a Bridge is also happening shortly before. Our riflemen have spied the French taking the guy's cart and drinking the wine and stuff. Hope that's ok. Let's go go go.

Re: Over the Hills?
The French are retreating from the bridge now, so please don't just kill us all as we run. You can maybe kill one or two of the more unpopular unknowns if you want, but please don't slaughter us as you easily could. Go faff around with your injured officers or something, or walk cautiously off of the bridge which has been hit with an artillery shell (I think).
Or kill outis if she'll let you. (Don't let them, outis!) Just don't kill me.

Re: Over the Hills?
The shell hit the side of the bridge, trowing some dust around, but before it exploded, it rebounced into the water. At least, that's what I figured as nobody used the shell in their posts
König and me were discussing an conversation between Delacroix and Fraser (Delacroix being wounded and in his first battle). Torrington is more then welcome to join - I'd like to show him Frasers more professional and experienced side.
