In the gardens
Some time later, after extracting himself from that roomful of curious strangers, Barton found himself wandering down a hallway decorated in wallpaper. There were photographs and paintings on the walls and he stopped at each one to study it closely. Art had been an interest of his as long as he could remember but it had been some time since he'd held a pencil or brush. Seeing works like these made him wistful.
Before too long he came to the end of the hallway and was faced with two doors. One stood partially open while the other was firmly shut. Barton chose the partially open door and cautiously eased it completely open. The room was small and narrow, with another door directly opposite the one he'd just opened, and by the look of it, the second door led outside. Curious, Barton crossed the small room and opened the outside door. He found himself looking out on a handsome, well-tended garden.
Despite the light nag of nerves, he grinned. A good garden was something to treasure. He hitched his rifle a little higher on his shoulder and stepped out onto the lawn. The grass looked healthy, if a bit in need of cutting. It reminded him a bit of home but this was a thought he quickly shook away. No sense in wasting energy on memories and impossible things. He reached up to adjust his helmet then walked slowly toward the garden.
"Hello?" He called as he got nearer, not wanting to startle anyone who might be here enjoying the grounds.

Re: In the gardens
Cotton had come out into the garden for a bit of air - it was rare enough that he got to see a proper garden these days, after all, and had found himself pausing to pull up a weed or two... or three...
Some habits died hard, after all.
And then a strange voice made him straighten up, grasping the rifle that was never more than arm's length away.
The challenge was automatic. And somewhat out of place here, of course. "Who goes there?"

Re: In the gardens
He stopped short upon hearing the challenge, for he recognised it for what it was. A threat. An indirect threat, granted, but still a possible danger. His rifle was down from his shoulder and in both hands before he was aware of the action, but he stopped short of putting his finger near the trigger.
It occurred to Barton then that he did not know if there was a proper challenge and reply in this place. He swallowed and called, "Private Barton, Eleventh Sherwood Foresters."

Re: In the gardens
Well, that didn't sound like a Frenchman, at any rate. Cotton came cautiously around the bush separating them, and blinked at the strangely-dressed man in front of him.
"Well, you ain't no Frog, anyhow," he said, nonplussed.

Re: In the gardens
Well, no. "Nor you," Barton said, lowering his rifle when the man who'd challenged came into view. It was another of those oddly-dressed fellows. This place was crawling with them. It made Barton feel hopelessly outnumbered.
"Who are you, then?"

Re: In the gardens
He lowered his own rifle. "Rifleman Gabriel Cotton, 60th Rifles."
What the hell was the other man wearing on his head?It looked like a smallish tin bowl, or something. And from the colour of his clothes, he'd spent the past day crawling through a particularly muddy waterlogged field.

Re: In the gardens
What was that supposed to mean? He frowned. "Sixtieth? The Rifle Corps's only got twenty-two battalions."
Though they wore no uniform like this fellow's. Barton did know that much.

Re: In the gardens
Only got... twenty-two?! Cotton gaped. No regiment had that many battalions!
"60th's got ten battalions - on paper, any'ow. Only got six marchin'." He pulled himself straight. "Fifth Battalion, Sixtieth Royal American Rifles, it is prop'ly."

Re: In the gardens
Only six battalions? What an absurdly low number. And the Fifth of the Sixtieth... what?
"Militia?" He asked, frowning in confusion. But it couldn't be. The concept of a 'Royal American' anything was completely baffling. It was a crime considered not far off from treason for Americans, like himself, to go to fight for the British. How, then, could there be a regiment with a title like that?
That was no accounting for this fellow's uniform, though. Barton could have boxed his own ears. "I've never heard of such a regiment," he said apologetically.

Re: In the gardens
Cotton shook his head. "Regiment of Foot," he added, helpfully, leaning comfortably on his Baker. "Bin around since '97." He took in what the other fellow was wearing, and tried to make it a bit clearer. "Seventeen-ninety-seven, that is. What did you say your lot was, though?"
Re: In the gardens
He'd nearly asked what this Cotton fellow meant, but his question was answered before it could be spoken. Maybe this confusion was a regular occurrence for Cotton?
"Eleventh Battalion, Sherwood Foresters," Barton supplied and wondered what earthly purpose that green bit on Cotton's helmet served. Except for a mark for the Germans to shoot at.

Re: In the gardens
"How the... Eleven?!" The Sixtieth was the one regiment with more than three battalions - even the Guards only had three. Eleven battalions, and twenty-two earlier... "You must have an awful lot of swaddies in your army," he said carefully. Sherwood Forest - he knew that, from the stories of Robin Hood that he'd been told as a kid, but he didn't know of any regiments from there. Or did he?
"You mean, the 45th?" he said, hoping he'd got the Nottinghamshire Regiment's number right. Only, when had they started calling themselves the Sherwood Forest Regiment instead?

Re: In the gardens
"Eleven of nineteen, last I knew," Barton said. "Yes. Most of the fellows are volunteers. Whole battalions raised in some cities, in fact. Lord Kitchener's New Army." He said with pride, surprised he could still feel it in such strength.
The Forty-fifth, though? That needed a moment's thought. "They... were part of what the regiment was formed out of, I believe."

Re: In the gardens
And that made things about as clear as mud.
"Formed out of...?" That made no sense; the 45th were still around somewhere - Cotton had an idea they'd been at Oporto. And something about the other man's accent and way of talking had been niggling at Cotton. Except for the fact there was no sash, he sounded like an officer. With a Jonathan's accent.
"Sir," he added hastily, straightening to attention and hoping he wasn't going to get a tongue-lashing - or worse! - for his impudence.

Re: In the gardens
"The Forty-fifth and the Ninety-fifth," he confirmed, pleased that he'd remembered the other regiment's number. "Merged in eighteen-eighty-one to form The Sherwood Foresters."
Maybe this was a sign he should look into his own regiment's history a little more? Most likely.
The other fellow's abrupt straightening to attention had Barton reacting similarly. Was there an officer nearby? Hopefully not one of his own. Being bombarded with questions about the whereabouts of his platoon and its state was not an event Barton wished to experience. Not in this place, at least, where so much was so exceedingly strange.

Re: In the gardens
"The Ninety-Fifth Rifles?" That was surprising enough but... "Eighteeneighty-one?" How could that be?!
A memory stirred - hadn't there been someone here from the war with America, a while back, with the old-fashioned long coats and three-cornered hats? He couldn't ask what year it was where the other soldier was from, though, because he'd just come to attention too. Maybe there was an officer around who Cotton hadn't seen, as well as the other soldier himself? Must be a pretty senior officer, if that was the case.
Though why would the other man be carrying a musket if he was an officer? This was getting to be really weird.

Re: In the gardens
It was a long moment before Barton relaxed his posture, having satisfied himself that there was in fact no officer in the vicinity. Fortunately.
"Rifles? No... the Derbyshire, I think. I don't know anything about - "
" 'Scuse me, lads," a new voice cut in. "Can you point me toward the NAAFI?" The voice belonged to a woman wearing a suit that was three shades of tan and a black lump of something that looked like wool on her head. Barton's eyes alighted on the dark green strip of cloth in the middle of the woman's shirt and he came sharply back to attention out of pure instinct.
It did not dawn on him until after he'd done so that the woman was wearing tall boots and trousers, she was wearing a first lieutenant's rank, and he had no idea what in the world a NAAFI was.

Re: In the gardens
What was all this? Martin peered warily around, feeling more than unusually apprehensive. The garden was nice enough, he supposed, but it was set within a place he was not in the least familiar with. He clutched the sling of his musket and wondered if he should have it in his hands instead of hanging from one shoulder.
There were voices up ahead, by the sound of it, which might be a good thing. It could very well be a bad thing as well, of course, but Martin wouldn't learn anything about this strange new place if he didn't attempt to find out more about it.
"H-H-Hello?"
