Re: 8th June, Guarding prisonnières at night
Polly was slightly startled when the other man grabbed the bottle of wine, but she found herself giggling as the two French soldiers tussled over it. They seemed like the English lads playing around. It was a reassuring thought.
Re: 8th June, Guarding prisonnières at night
Charcot heard the girl's laugh, and his scowl transformed to a delighted smile as he turned toward her again. "Yes, little Mouse! My mouse that smiles, my mouse that laughs!" He paused. "You don't speak French?" Probably not. Almost certainly not, in fact, or else she would have understood his conversation with Couture and would probably not still be here. But it was a shame she could not appreciate his witticisms. He tore off another piece of bread and held it out to her. "No French?" he asked again, more simply.

Re: 8th June, Guarding prisonnières at night
Taking the piece of bread, Polly smiled sweetly at Charcot. It was really pleasant to learn that some of the soldiers could be nice. Part of her wondered if she should perhaps save some of the bread for Jenny or Janet.
She just wished she knew what he was saying! Tilting her head to the side, Polly asked, "D'ye know English?"

So it was like that. She only spoke English, and he only spoke French. But that was all right. They didn't need to talk.
He handed the bottle to her. "Some wine? It's good. Good wine." It wasn't really, but it was better than no wine at all.

Re: 8th June, Guarding prisonnières at night
Polly looked curiously at the bottle, and sniffed it. She had never actually had wine before. It smelled interesting. With a shrug, she took a careful sip.
It was disgusting! Polly swallowed with a shudder, her face twisting with distaste. She handed the bottle quickly back towards the two Frenchmen.

Charcot laughed at her reaction. "You don't like it?" Though it was a disappointment too. The wine might have loosened her up a bit, made her forget her timidity. Still, perhaps there were other things to make her forget. "How about some cheese then. Cheese? Mice like cheese, don't they?." He held up a piece so she could see it, but she would have to draw closer if she wanted to take it from his hand.

Re: 8th June, Guarding prisonnières at night
Cheese certainly looked better than wine. Polly came forward to take it, smiling again.
"Thank ye," she said shyly. She took a small bite, very pleased with this turn in fortunes.

Re: 8th June, Guarding prisonnières at night
Such a sweet and innocent pretty little thing. Like a bird, Charcot thought. A bird that has never seen men before and doesn't know any reason to fear them. She was sitting quite close now. What did he have that could keep her there? He smiled and held up a finger. "Wait just a second." And he began digging around in his bag. "Ah ha!" he exclaimed triumphantly, pulling out a little bundle of precious dried apple. "Have one. It's sweet. Like you, sweet mouse."

Couture rolled his eyes and made a barely audible retching sound.

Charcot picked up a small pebble from the ground where he was sitting and chucked it at Couture.

Couture, as ever lacking in subtlety, pulled up a clump of dirt and grass and flung it at Charcot.

Re: 8th June, Guarding prisonnières at night
And now they were acting like her brothers. Polly giggled again. Clearly all boys were children.
Re: 8th June, Guarding prisonnières at night
Charcot heard her giggling and he laughed as well. All at once, he took her hands and pulled her up to her feet, dancing and spinning her around to a tuneless laughing song. "Da da da da... Dance with me, little mouse!"

Re: 8th June, Guarding prisonnières at night
Being pulled into a dance was surprising at first, and she almost pulled away. Then, Polly started to laugh again. She had not danced in a very long time - probably not since before she had left England, and Johnny had been alive. It was fun!
Re: 8th June, Guarding prisonnières at night
Charcot grinned as he twirled her. He had been right about his mouse. He had picked the right flower and he was happy with his choice. When had he last had a girl? He hoped that Couture was watching and feeling jealous. Encouraged by the girl's laughter - she was a welcoming girl, a willing girl, warm and ready for anything! - he pulled her in hard against his body and kissed her mouth almost as if he would devour it.

Re: 8th June, Guarding prisonnières at night
A high, sharp voice cut through the darkness, rather like a scalpel slicing across the night. "Unhand that girl at once!" The French was perhaps not the best but the meaning was unmistakable.

Re: 8th June, Guarding prisonnières at night
Polly let out a small squeak of surprise at Charcot's sudden kiss, and struggled to pull back from his grasp. Panic flooded through her - this was not what she had meant to happen at all.
Re: 8th June, Guarding prisonnières at night
Charcot turned his head for only a moment at the harsh sound of another woman's voice. "Couture, shut up that blubber."

Re: 8th June, Guarding prisonnières at night
There was the sound of brisk footsteps approaching them, accompanied by business-like swish of skirts. "Have you ears that work? Unhand that girl!"
Fury gave Missus Tolliver's voice an edge like a cat-o'-nine-tails and to help this French pig understand her meaning, she grabbed for his collar. He would mind or she would make him!

In his surprise at being collared, Charcot lost his grip on the girl, but he turned (with some difficulty) to grab the woman instead. "One at a time, missy! Wait your turn!"

The woman's response to this was quick and firm; she released the man's collar and boxed his ears.

Re: 8th June, Guarding prisonnières at night
Charcot staggered slightly with the painful shock. There was a ringing and a dullness and a burning in his ears, all at the same time. But while one hand reached up to cover an ear, the other hand swung a wild backhand at the old putain. Charcot did not generally hold with beating women - he usually had no need for such measures - but he had no scruples about violent self-defense when it was called for.

Re: 8th June, Guarding prisonnières at night
"No! Stop!" Polly shouted. Well, tried to - her voice seemed stuck in her throat, and it came out more of a frightened whimper.
Still, she grabbed at Charcot's arm, trying to stop him from hitting her rescuer. How could she have been so stupid! And now, another woman was in trouble on her behalf as well.

Re: 8th June, Guarding prisonnières at night
Couture, recovering from the mute surprise which had temporarily rooted him to the spot, jumped forward, grabbing for the woman's arms and trying to pull her away from Charcot.
