Re: 11th June: Returning with gifts
"Just as long as you don't go for a man's crown jewels.." Zachary murmured, holding back laughter. "They are better left put, be it from a live one, or a dead one." He looked innocently at Cotton.
Re: 11th June: Returning with gifts
"I was nie long in a town. Were you? Als Kind ... children?"
Freddie blew his fringe out of his face to look up. He tried to find his favourite constellations - not that he knew any of the official ones. But he had drawn lines between some of the stars for himself, and an old farm hand had once pointed out the Little Dipper to him. After some time he found it - it turned out that where he had supposed north to be was actually the wrong direction - the he pointed to it.
"There! Der Kleine Wagen!"
He looked at Pye, a question in his face. There was some kind of joke in his words that he didn't get, but perhaps the lad would explain?

Re: 11th June: Returning with gifts
Cotton shook his head. "Nope. Was bred and born in the country me - that's where I grew up." He grinned. "Wagon?" 'Kleine' was 'small', he knew that much, and the younger Rifleman was pointing at the Little Bear.
"I call it the Little Bear, me." He shifted and pointed up towards the Big Dipper. "That's the Big Dipper, or the Big Bear... I allus thought it looked like a saucepan, though."
He grinned at Pye's joke. "Ah, crown jewels... weddin' tackle..." Maggie was nowhere near them, not that he could tell from his position on the ground, and he indicated his crotch, quickly returning his hand to his mug of tea. "Though I heard 'em called family jewels more'n crown jewels."

Re: 11th June: Returning with gifts
"Where do ye see a small bear... or wagon.. or anything." Pye wanted to know. He saw the stars. Twinkling little things, lights. Small lights that were not like the sun, but were greater in number. Like soldiers to one general.
He saw the moon too,and knew that it shone a bit differently to the stars but he could see it sometimes in the day, or so he thought. "..There's three in a row." He agreed, thinking that they were only special because they almost felt like they made some order. He grinned as Cotton explained. "It's...well, as Gabe showed you. It's not t' kind o' jewels you'd want stealin'..though it is t' kind you'd want protecting!"

"That's Orion. Them stars are his belt," Cotton said, and moved his hand up, pointing to the other stars that made up that constellation. "The one we was lookin' at... Here."
He sat up, then got up and moved till he was kneeling next to Pye, and pointed at the sky again. "See, the one that looks like a saucepan - there's the handle and there's the pan. And them two stars point north. You can allus see the Dipper, unless it's cloudy, and it's one of the easiest ones to learn. Know that an' you'll allus know where north is, so it's real useful, too."

Re: 11th June: Returning with gifts
Freddie's eyes grew wide when he realized what his friends meant.
"Oh..., no, no stealing Crown-jewels!"
He pointed up to another constellation.
"Can you see this cross up there? I think it is a Vo... bird. Or vielleicht ein Drache. It flys the sky and looks down ... And there, that is Mars. The Herr Pfarrer says it is not a real star, but it is ... nice, isn't it? A bit red and so hell!"

Re: 11th June: Returning with gifts
Cotton looked up at where Rottländer was pointing. "Yes, it's a swan. Um..." He tried to think of the German word, but couldn't. "Huh? Don't think I know that one - I only know some of 'em, see, the real easy ones."
Re: 11th June: Returning with gifts
"Swan, Swun ... Schwan? White, and long ...?"
Freddie placed both his hands under his jaws and mimicked pulling his neck longer.
"That one is fast. It goes up and down every night!", he explained proudly.
He had no idea why a star would do this, but a star that was faster than all the others surely was good, wasn't it?

"How do you know which starts go together and which don't? Couse... I can't see it 'ere.. 'cept for those three.. the rest are just.. tey can, but they couldn't. .they might look like a saucepan or.. or things, but what about if we..." He hesitated. "Why do you need to know which one's are which?" He glanced at the two, who grew in his eyes as highly educated men.
Freddie knew, and Cotton knew about stars. To him, they had been merely the shiny spots of light in the sky, that appeared only during the night, but never during the day. They were not bright enough and without the moon being full, the night was a very dark place to be in!

Freddie grinned.
"I make the most together-stars myself. Say what they are, I mean. Take the stars that are very good to see and make lines zwischen them, and then see what it is. But the Kleine Wagen is a real one. One that is in books. We could manchmal go heimlich out of the Waisenhaus at night. Then I looked at the stars. Or we goed to the fields when it was dark to start with the sun. Have you not look...ed before, Zachary?"

Re: 11th June: Returning with gifts
"Up there? I looked a'right. Didn't want that 'un. "He pointed at the moon. "To shine too bright, else I'd be seen...and those.." He waved to the stars. "They wasn't much help when you was out workin'..I knew t' streets b' heart. Didn't need ter know else." He shrugged. "Though out when ..well later. Yeah, I looked at 'em sometime 'couse there was little else to do sometimes. They were shiny.. pretty , but if those sparklin' diamonds, they was way too far for me to fetch 'em ter earn a fortune."
Re: 11th June: Returning with gifts
Even though he became more and more familiar with his new friend's speech pattern - this was beyond Freddie. So he kept silent and continued to gaze up to the stars.
Re: 11th June: Returning with gifts
"Um... " Freddie looked like he'd just gone and spoken in a completely different language. Pye paused ,then tried. "What I meant is.... not long enough... ter make more sense than them being up there?" Would this make enough sense to Freddie or did he need to try and find a different way to tell him what he had meant?
Re: 11th June: Returning with gifts
Cotton chuckled, looking between the two lads. "All I know about the stars is what Mas'r Comport told me - he was the shepherd, see, back home, an' he knew a mort of stuff. All them stars are part of pikchers, sort of, from old stories a long time ago."
He looked up and pointed at Orion. "Right... you see them three stars right close together in a line? That's Orion's belt, an' if you go up, there's two stars for his shoulders, an' down's two stars for his feet... they make a sort of box shape. An' that's Orion, who's a hunter."

Re: 11th June: Returning with gifts
Freddie squinted his eyes to make the blurred dots of light come into some kind of focus.
"Why has he a belt and a sword, and not a ... Bogen ... bowen ... bow? Or a musket? Do you know?"

Re: 11th June: Returning with gifts
Cotton shrugged. "I think folks first made up that picture a long time ago, afore there was muskets an' all. He's s'posed to be carryin' a lion skin or somethin', but I'm blowed if I can ever see it."
Re: 11th June: Returning with gifts
There was another Word Freddie had not heard before.
"What is a 'lionskin'?", he inquired. He supposed it must be some kind of weapon, so it would probably be a good word to know.

Re: 11th June: Returning with gifts
Cotton himself wasn't too clear on what a lion was either. "A skin... um." He rolled over and sat up before holding his hand out and tugging at the skin on the back of it with his other hand. "Skin. A lion... I think it's a big cat - bigger than a man. Lives in... in India, or Africa or somewhere."
