Introduction to the 60th
The 60th's bivouac probably wasn't quite the sort of thing that Lieutenant Ferrero had expected. Although, for one newly arrived in Portugal and who had made his own way up to the army, maybe it was better than he'd expected. Vickery couldn't be sure.
There were small fires scattered around, being tended to by moustached Germans. The only men in the Company who were clean-shaven were Vickery and the small handful of Englishmen under his command; the Germans had permission to keep their moustaches.
"Most of my British Riflemen are missing after the recent skirmish, Lieutenant," he told Ferrero. "I presume they were captured; they remain otherwise unaccounted for. And I know for a fact that Rifleman Cotton, my own soldier-servant, was taken prisoner."

Re: Introduction to the 60th
Quite a few heads turned around to see the Captain and the other young man coming.
The place looked...well, pretty much the way a military camp should look. Nothing out of the ordinary, thought Alberto. Except for the Germans. But he guessed that since he was a foreigner to the English too, there shouldn't be much difference in his approach to the moustached soldiers.
"Sir, i expected most of the riflemen to be Germans" said Alberto "And to hear about those Englishmen captured really touches the heart. I hope those French will treat them fairly"

Re: Introduction to the 60th
Vickery nodded. "I see no reason that the French would not treat our men fairly. After all, we would treat French prisoners with all due courtesy so there is no reason to expect that they would not do the same."
He acknowledged the Riflemen who were getting to their feet with the characteristic politeness he had come to expect of the Germans as he and Ferrero approached them.
"I don't believe I asked earlier," he said, the thought coming to him suddenly. "Do you speak German at all?"

"I'm afraid not, Sir." said Alberto looking quite embarassed "Do the men speak some english?"

Re: Introduction to the 60th
Vickery hastened to reassure the Lieutenant. "Not all of them, but the Sergeants do - although you may find them a little hard to understand at first, simply because of their accents." It also meant that he would have to find Ferrero a batman from among the English members of the Company.
"I am sure you will pick some German up, even without realising it. It is quite hard to be surrounded by people speaking in a foreign language and not learn something, after all - as you already know, of course."

Re: Introduction to the 60th
Ferrero smiled "Yes, Sir"
"If the Sergeants speak english, i think we will not have problems."

Re: Introduction to the 60th
Vickery returned the smile. "That's good, then. I presume you are aware that as a single Company on detached service, the officers' mess will just be the Company officers? Even though we are nominally attached to the Second Foot Guards, that is."
It would be a small mess, with just three officers in the Company. It was important that they could all get on with each other.

Re: Introduction to the 60th
"Sir, that means the officers' mess will be quite...restricted, with the company detached?" said Ferrero.

Re: Introduction to the 60th
Vickery nodded, smiling ruefully. "I am afraid so, which means it is imperative that we all get along with each other. Of course, there will be the opportunity to entertain guests while we are with the Coldstreams - and the rest of the Second Division - but when we are on detached service, social opportunities will necessarily be restricted, as you say."
Re: Introduction to the 60th
"Understood Sir, we will have to postpone the social interaction until we send the French back over the Pyrenees." Alberto crossed his arms behind his back and looked around "Shall we continue with the introduction?"

Re: Introduction to the 60th
"I don't know if we will have to wait quite as long as that," Vickery replied dryly. He led the way over to the nearest fire, where young Cavender, the Company bugler, had been talking animatedly to Roper. The lad fell awkwardly silent as the two officers approached.
"Lieutenant, this is our bugler, Joe Cavender, and Tom Roper, one of our Chosen Men," Vickery said.
Roper straightened up from where he had been tending the small fire, and saluted. "If you don't mind waitin' a moment, there'll be a cup of tea, should you want, sir," he said, looking between the two officers.
Re: Introduction to the 60th
Ferrero stood in his more martial pose andsaluted back. He then looked the two men in front of him thoroughly. One was definitely too young to be there. But if that was acceptable for His Majesty's army, his age was just fine for Alberto. The other one looked almost german...Vickery already said his name and of course it slipped through Alberto's mind, but it didn't sound german at all. Oh, damn he always forgets names.
He was about to answer the Riflemen when he thought about letting Vickery answer.

Re: Introduction to the 60th
Vickery glanced at Ferrero, who seemed to be waiting for him to take the lead. "I don't think I could turn down a good cup of tea, Roper," he replied. He smiled at Cavender, who had gone shy under Ferrero's scrutiny.
Re: Introduction to the 60th
Taking a step forward Ferrero spoke to Roper, taking a glance at the fire "Riflemen Rowper, how long have you been in the army?"

Re: Introduction to the 60th
"It's Roper, sir," the rifleman said, correcting the officer's pronunciation slightly self-consciously. "Been in, um, about six years or so, I reckon. Most of 'em in the 60th."
Re: Introduction to the 60th
"Good, mmhh, good." Ferrero hesitated for a second "Long enough to know what is needed to run things smoothly. The Captain said you are one of the Chosen Men. That means you are a good shot, am i right? Who would you say is the best rifle in the company?"

Re: Introduction to the 60th
He grinned. "Oh, I'm a good shot right enough, sir. Ain't a patch on Cotton, though. Dunno as anyone here is as good as him." He shrugged, glancing at Captain Vickery. "Reckon he'd be a Corp'ral by now, if he wasn't the captain's own batman, sir."
Though of course he was missing, presumed captured, so it was a moot point now.

Re: Introduction to the 60th
Roper nodded. "Aye, he was, sir." He shrugged. "Though if I know Gabe Cotton, he won't stay captured for long, if he can help it, sir."
Re: Introduction to the 60th
"God knows, rifleman. We will see." nodded Ferrero with an unusual serious look on his face. "Is the tea ready?"

Re: Introduction to the 60th
The kettle was boiling now, and Roper wadded his forage hat up to use as a pan-grabber to lift the kettle off the fire, before rummaging in his cartridge pouch for some tea-leaves.
"D'you have a mug, sir?" he enquired of the officer.
Re: Introduction to the 60th
Instinctively Ferrero looked around, like a mug would pop up magically.
"Mmmh..no, i have not brought it with me..."

Re: Introduction to the 60th
Roper did his best not to sigh, and dug out his own battered, tea-stained mug. "Hope you don't mind usin' mine, sir," he said, giving it a quick wipe with his jacket-tail before adding a handful of tea-leaves and pouring in some water from the kettle, before holding it out to the Lieutenant. "There y'go, sir."
Re: Introduction to the 60th
Ferrero swallowed a bit louder that he wanted. "Thank you Rouper...". He took the mug and sipped touching the mug with as little lips as possible.

Re: Introduction to the 60th
Roper had to hide a grin. "It is clean, sir, though I know it don't look it." He put the kettle back over the fire again and beat his forage hat against his leg before putting it on.
"It's 'Roper', sir... More of an 'oh' sound."
