Leveque shook his head. "Though...I hear that Rousseau is something of a musician. Perhaps he knows something of your mysterious young woman."

His spoon scraped against the inside of the bowl, seeking out the very last bits of porridge. "A fine meal," Blanchard declared thickly, refraining from using his fingers to clean the bowl.
He was oblivious to the shift in conversation.

A look of amusement crossed Chevenier's face as he watched Blanchard finish off his breakfast so happily. He schooled his face to polite neutrality, however, as he asked mildly, "Your compliments to the chef, Blanchard?"

Re: English breakfast at Beckwith
Lechat took his empty bowl to the shelf where the dirty ones have been collected and dumped it there. With a stretch of his limbs and a yawn, shielded by the palm of his hand, he announced himself full. Though the porridge was only partially to thank, not for the taste but for its rather 'sploshy' amount.
Rousseau yawned: "...We are useless here." But for the teaching of the populace of art and of music, and of their own language, if any could speak both.

Re: English breakfast at Beckwith
Jarreau gave a short bark of laughter, "That's the point. If they thought there was still the possibility of us being useful, we wouldn't be here. We'd be at the bottom of a ditch somewhere on the continent or, in the case of our new friend here, the bottom of the ocean.”

Re: English breakfast at Beckwith
Daubigny shot Jarreau a frown. He did not like thinking of such things. However... "I still intend to make myself useful," he announced. "I don't want to spend the war sitting here doing nothing. Getting fat and being idle. Or... Well, being idle at any rate." Not much likelihood of growing fat on Beckwith Castle's food.
Re: English breakfast at Beckwith
Jarreau snorted. "You do that."

Re: English breakfast at Beckwith
Daubigny gave him a full fledged scowl. "Well it's ridiculous staying here! We ought to be getting out there, and doing our part, and all that!"
Re: English breakfast at Beckwith
"Oh, wake up!" exclaimed Jarreau impatiently, "It doesn't make a damn bit of difference what you do."

Re: English breakfast at Beckwith
"It isn't so easy to get out of here though." Lechat leaned forward, glancing at Daubigny. "Anyway, you gave them your parole. Didn't you? Have to respect that. Or so they say." He frowned.
Rousseau gazed at the men but said nothing more at that moment. He was certainly listening though, his attention raised when Daubigny began to have the speech of duties and of escape.

Re: English breakfast at Beckwith
Daubigny continued frowning but did not answer. He did not feel he had to respect anything concerning the English, including his parole, but this crowded mess hall was probably not the place to say so. It occurred to him that there might be spies, men willing to betray their fellow captives to the British in return for greater privileges.
"I suppose you're right," he finally said. He would have to find out who he could trust before continuing this line of conversation.

Re: English breakfast at Beckwith
"The British have an interesting idea of honour," Chevenier put in. "It does not seem to include one's responsibility to their men."
He shrugged. "At the very least, their thoughts on it are something to contemplate with the time they leave us."
With a show of dusting off his waistcoat, he changed the subject. "What can you tell us of the state of the war?" he asked, smiling wryly. "I'm afraid that you would have the most recent news."

Re: English breakfast at Beckwith
"You don't get much news here?" Daubigny asked, grateful for a change of subject, even though it was an awkward question. He had no idea how the war was going, apart from ships in his own squadron being under constant attack. He answered evasively. "Well I'm afraid I can't tell you much about the army side of things. That would be Blanchard's area of expertise, eh Blanchard? But as for the navy... We're winning. Yes, definitely."
Re: English breakfast at Beckwith
"Well, that is good news, indeed," Chevenier said with a smile, the corners of his eyes crinkling in private amusement. He raised his eyebrows at Blanchard. "I take it that the war is the same for the army as the navy?" he asked. "Wins all around, save our respective captures?"

"Certainly," Blanchard said with obvious pride. "The Grande Armée has swept all before it."

"Seems as though it's swept you under the rug," Daubigny remarked, though without malice. "Shame our beloved Emperor can't see his way toward exchanging us. I know our prisons are full of British officers."
Re: English breakfast at Beckwith
"I suspect that the Emperor is using his leverage for people slightly higher in the chain of command than you or I," Chevenier said drily.

Re: English breakfast at Beckwith
The peace by the door was disturbed. It opened with a jerk and an armed guard stepped in, another remaining outside. Between them a man entered. At first it was not clear that he was indeed an officer. His coat was missing, his boots borrowed, his trousers indeed his own, and his shirt again gotten from his captors, replacing the one in which he had been found. He wore bandages across his left eye, and stood not fully upright. He gave a slow nod and cautiously murmured a greeting, while their captors simply left.

Re: English breakfast at Beckwith
That was a rough looking fellow, Daubigny thought to himself. Though perhaps it was only the bandage over his eye that gave him the appearance of a lame beggar intending to pick your pocket. "Who is that?" he asked his neighbors at table.
Re: English breakfast at Beckwith
Lechat arched a brow, then grinned. "Don't know. But we've got a new fellow!" He studied the young man who appeared less keen on taking a seat though he might as well have been deserving of a bed. "Somebody ought to ask him for an introduction." Which he was not volunteering for. Let someone higher in the ranks do it.

“Capitaine Rene Leveque, at your service, sir,” said Leveque, rising and approaching the newcomer, “Won’t you join us?”

Re: English breakfast at Beckwith
"Capitaine?" The man visibly straightened, even though it took effort. "Sous-lieutenant ..." There he hesitated as if debating in what to say. The truth, a lie, but not a lie because of the French but rather because of the British. "You ought to call me LeFevre." He said and added a proper address to the capitaine.
He smiled, have a short nod and moved towards the indicated tables. "I shall be honoured to, if I may."

Re: English breakfast at Beckwith
“At your ease, sous-lieutenant,” said Leveque gently, leading the young officer towards the table, “Not much need for that here. Come, I’ll introduce you: Capitaines Jean-Fabrice Chevenier and Rousseau. And Lieutenants Nicolas Daubigny (newly arrived, himself), August Rougeau, Sebastien Jarreau, Henri Blanchard and Lechat. Gentlemen, this is Sous-lieutenant LeFevre.”
