Looking for a needle, 25 may
he moved away from where he had just bin ordered from to find some needle and thread an odd request really but an order were an order though he were abit tired of all this running around he should have rested when he had, had the chance instead of taking a stroll, he sighed but non the less were better then doing nothing. he looked for the first random women to ask about thread as he headed around the camp

Re: Looking for a needle, 25 may
Sitting crosslegged against the frame of one of the wagon-wheels, Lucy turned the shirt she was working on inside-out to examine the seam she had just finished. It had come out well - it was almost impossible to tell, from the outside, that the shirt had ever been torn here. Good. Between this and the breeches she had already done, that was another ha'penny earned. She set it down, folding it carefully next to her workbasket, and took up the next garment in line.
She caught sight of the fellow just after that. It was a young man in the uniform of the 15th Hussars - the musicians, she thought. He was looking for something, or for someone. Lucy watched him sidelong, warily. Her pile of work to do was smaller than she'd like, today. This lad could be an opportunity.
"Can Ah help ye?" she asked. "Seems ye're lookin' fer summat."

Re: Looking for a needle, 25 may

Re: Looking for a needle, 25 may
Lucy raised one eyebrow at the hussar. She was holding a needle and thread in her hand right now; hadn't he seen it? But she wasn't about to just hand it over to him; first of all, needles weren't come by so easily as all that, and if he ran off with one of hers she'd probably never see it again. Besides, from the sounds of it, there was work to be done.
She hopped upright and approached him, gathering up the mending she'd already gotten, along with her workbasket, which she put over her arm. "If there's stitchin' te be dyun, give it tiv us, an' Ah'll tyek care of it. Ah'm a canny good hand wi' a needle."

Re: Looking for a needle, 25 may
being half in his own world still abit tired of somereason he finally put two and two together when she had the needle in her hand, he werent quite sure what she said so he were silent for a short moment trying to decipher what the young girl had said before he answered "oh... ehm it aint me who need something repaired its Captain Broderick"

Re: Looking for a needle, 25 may
Captain Broderick, was it? It was too good to pass up; an officer often paid a little more than the rank and file. She took a quick look around to make sure she had no competition in the immediate vicinity - good; the hussar musician didn't have any other options at the moment. She could make a small demand. "Champion. Then Ah'll gan wi' ye te find him," she announced. "Canna just gis ye wor needle, can Ah? Hoo waad Ah get it back?"

Re: Looking for a needle, 25 may
wonders if she is paranoid or its just her sense of competition that stroke through somehow it amused him as he tryed to conceal a smile then he answered "ah capital!... i think its best if ya hand it over wouldn't wanna miss ya needle" he scratched his eyebrow happy that he didn't have that silly hat on "right this way miss?" he motions in the direction of which he came.

Re: Looking for a needle, 25 may
He still seemed to want her to hand over the needle, but he wasn't going to get it. To make that clear, she set the implements in her workbasket and closed the top. He conceded, then, apparently, and made a gesture to her to go ahead. "Ye lead an' Ah'll follow ahint," Lucy answered. She didn't like having people walking behind her, where she couldn't see them; it made her nervous.

Re: Looking for a needle, 25 may
he looked at as she packed up the implements and thought for a moment not all that sure on the idea of a girl weren't really his strong side, but she looked pretty in her own way he thought he nodded as a respond "right this way miss..." he walked forward in a slow pace trying to be sure she could keep up he felt like he just had to ask "so... got a name miss?" he thought that she probably were just trying to make a living like most camp followers and that she probably didn't like the cavalry with their upper class look and nice uniforms.

Re: Looking for a needle, 25 may
He started forward, and Lucy followed after him, workbasket and mending in hand. He was going slowly, though, slower than he needed to; she caught up with him quickly, walking half a step behind and to one side. She supposed he was dragging his feet for her sake, but she could step faster than this. "Haway, man!" she urged him to go a little quicker. "Me nyem is Lucy. Ne need fer 'miss,' ye knaa's." Courtesy wasn't something she was offered much; she didn't really know what to do when it was.

Re: Looking for a needle, 25 may
but surprised she caught up so quickly he still had to get used to it not being the snop high class people he were around which somehow made it more glad not that he much like the high class for his own reason, as she said 'haway man' he guessed she wanted him to go faster so he did so. as she introduced herself he nodded "alright then lucy, im William" he reminded himself to rid the habbit of courtesy.

"Hoo's ya fettle, Will?" she inquired. He seemed interested in making small talk, and so she'd keep it up as long as he wanted to. Even if he was here on behalf of an officer, he might have business for her of one sort or another himself, afterwards. A private soldier generally didn't have much money, but he was in the Hussars, and his uniform looked rather new. He might still have something left of his signing bonus. "Weor are we gannin', and what's it needs mendin'?" she added.

Re: Looking for a needle, 25 may
He looked at her blankly in response to her query, seeming not to comprehend, and she repeated her question in words he was more likely to understand. "Y'areet? Ye doin' good?" She tried not to slip too far into the dialect, usually, in an effort to be understood. Though she didn't have the gift of imitating other folks' gab, and couldn't drop her accent. She'd never talk like a gentlewoman, but she tried to knock a little of the Newcastle out of her vocabulary.
"Summat mixed up wi' a Froggy?" she inquired.

Re: Looking for a needle, 25 may
"Ah'm areet. Bonny the day, mar," she replied. She was well enough, and not one for complaining much. She would rather hear about his day than talk about her own; there wasn't much to be said on it in any case. "Odd one is't?" she prompted him, when he seemed to have trailed off.

Re: Looking for a needle, 25 may
he nodded thinking that his silence were probably awkward atleast that is how he considered it hating that he were a better listener then talker but he'd have to get along with that afterall he were best at just following orders but non the less he though that he might be able to learn this girl better to know as she said that in almost a questioning tone he decided to answer "aye odd would be an undersatement" he chukled thinking of how it would sound to a strangers ear "i found a baby while i were ridin around" he shook his head amused

Re: Looking for a needle, 25 may
With that slight prompt, he spoke up again; there was something strange about his speech even to Lucy's ear. When he said 'odd would be an understatement,' that sounded almost posh. But then he lapsed back into a different way of talking, more like what she was used to hearing. She watched him out of the corner of her eye, a little suspiciously, when he wasn't looking at her.
"Foond a bairn did ye?" she inquired. "A Froggy bairn?"

Re: Looking for a needle, 25 may
he nodded still amused "aye found a baby not sure if it were froggy or not it didnt speak and an english cry or a frog cry all be tha same ta me... bit seemed tha frog were its mother" he restrained himself from laughing but it were clear he thought it amusing or maybe it were the lack of him knowing how to react to it

Re: Looking for a needle, 25 may
The story still didn't make much sense to Lucy; there was a baby with a French mother, and this lad had found it, but where did the Frenchwoman come in to things? Where'd she come from? What was she doing in the English camp? "Bairn divvent knaa hoo te taak Froggy or owt anyways," she agreed, for lack of anything else to say - and it seemed to her from the way he was half laughing to himself that he expected a response. She didn't laugh with him, though; she didn't understand what was so funny, or what was going on at all, really. Besides, Lucy never laughed much.
"Weor's this Cap'n, leik? Wi' the bairn an' the Froggy lass?"

Re: Looking for a needle, 25 may
he cleared his throat thinking how little sense it were making to her comåared to how little sense it made to him "eh... last i saw him he were by his tent trying to help the frog lady with somethin' not tha i know."
he werent quite sure if that were what she meant but he answered it anyways

Re: Looking for a needle, 25 may
He'd not understood what she meant, again. "An' weor's the tent, Will?" she clarified. She wanted to know where she was going, instead of following blindly; she was starting to wonder if he'd somehow managed to get them lost, or something. Of course, it could just be that the tent was a long ways away, but she did want to know how far it was.

Re: Looking for a needle, 25 may
He had stopped, so she stopped as well. "Abacka beyont, leik?" she said, offhandedly. There were a load of people gathered up around the tent, several hussars and what looked like an officer encircling another group of people in the middle. Lucy tried to peer past them, but she couldn't see what was going on in the center of the knot of hussars. "Crooded too," she commented.
He was smiling at her, she noticed when she looked away from the tent and back at him. Lucy, however, did not smile back, but looked at him, calculating, with her usual neutral expression. "Aye, what?" she asked, wondering if he wanted something - he was still only standing there.
