Post  HMS Terpsichore Mon Apr 20, 2009 10:50 pm

Thursday, 18 May,

Middle watch
- larboard

Mr Crozier returns to ship and makes preparations for the arrival of Dr. Maturin and the other guests.

Morning watch
- starboard
The mares are loaded onto the ship sometime between the Morning watch and First Dog Watch.

Afternoon watch
Padstowe, Raoul and Dr. Maturin make final preparations to leave for harbour. , Dr Maturin having given his report on the espionage network to the British Headquarters, and then visited the hospital at Belem with Raoul.

First Dog Watch - evening tide

Mr Crozier waits impatiently at the wharf. Chase and Dyer, as boat crew, wait for signal and then enter boat, Cartwright arrives first time to replace Brandeson, Quinn prepares the quarterguard for passenger arrival, Cartwright oversees the preparations, Thompson is let to be present as well. The passengers come aboard, in the process there a discussion is held as to who shall be first and last. Sailors observe till Leat sends them back to work. Padstowe goes up in a Bosun's chair, marines greet them according to formal procedure.

The passengers wish to present themselves to Bolitho.Maturin, Padstowe and Crozier talk (while Raoul is on deck). Bolitho asks Leat about the arrival of guests, and is presented with Raoul. Elsewhere Quinn scolds his marines, after overhearing their comments about the French passanger.Later Dr. Crozier is asked to go to sick bay by Bridgens. Dr. Crozier arrives in sick bay to check on Thompson's ankle. Thompson permitted to use the roundhouse, although he is granted permission to recuperate in the Marines' mess, is given a crutch and asked about Dr. Maturin. M'Clure comes to help Thompson back to his berth.

Thompson meets Branning after coming to the marines' berth. Allen joins them, tired out but glad the loading is no more. Grog is stopped for Thompson, till he is off the sick list, but the marines know how to solve that problem. Bakewell shares his wisdom on tots and mathematics Wink Johnson appears in a sour mood, but is quickly joined by Cartwright, who has been searching for him, asks for a tour and scolds Johnson for not reporting an injured marine. The marines have seen the first proper introduction of Cartwright, and seem impressed. Emily arrives for some marine attention.. Johnson doesn't like the new lieutenant at all. Drummer boys - Oxley - aren't exempt from fretting over Miss Emily. Bakewell seems to be the only one who doesn't like her as much though, or other animals for that matter.Ware wakes up and agrees the new lieutenant is better than the old.

Second Dog Watch - starboard

The Terpsy leaves her moorings on the Tagus - Sunset at 7.10pm or just after 2 bells on the second dog watch.

Supper - later because earlier preparations and need to set sail and catch the tide
Halley goes to eat with the Tars, Barrow helps him find the way. Seward does not approve the arrival of a landsman among them. Squeak and Donald have their own opinions too. When Seward complains about De Guarde and some other things, Keane has a witty response. De Guarde accuses Seward of a mutinous talk, which doesn't sit well with the man. Mr. Slater , the new Midshipman, appears out of thin air to surprise the Tars. Seward leaves though several try to stop him. More is known about Halley, where he hails from, with young Oates joining in, all while the Tars eat. Westdale and De Guarde try to convince Halley that landlubbers can sense storms coming and prank him some more. Samuels takes pity and De Guarde is to do his duty as mess cook. Teasing ensues, De Guarde snaps, Chase warns and then gives a peptalk. Chase nicknames De Guarde, Buckles. They clean up together and agree to meet in the hold.

First Watch
- larboard

Chase arrives below to see the horses and isn't very eager to touch Copenhagen. They talk about the French passenger and disagree. Probably part ways sometime later.

The officers and passengers eat supper, and the midshipmen talk and play cards (Normally those off watch would be sleeping by now - we can blame the late departure for their staying up late)

Introductions are made, they talk and after a while they start arguing. De Guarde throws the first punch. Names are called and the boys start fighting. Oxley's wrist is being twisted, which prompts him to knee De Guarde. He faints from the pain and Shepherd arrives. The two conspire together and use the given opportunity.

De Guarde comes round and Oxley is up already also.

Up all hammocks

Dyer
notices De Guarde gone, Chase bolts to find him.Flying slops are discovered. And Dyer finds the boy. Chase is informed of the culprits - marines. The Tars and marines line up for

Cartwright introduces his steward Foley, who is going to oversee Oxley's punishment duties. First duty, polishing buttons. While he works, Oxley recollects the events that lead to the punishment. And then they talk about Cartwright. Oxley gets some candy - perks of a steward! Starts brushing the coat next. Cartwright comes from drill, to fetch a new shirt, while Foley is out. Oxley feels wretched, while talking about the event with Mr. Cartwright. Foley returns and they head on deck with shirts.

- Mr. Leat sends De Guarde to Dr. Crozier who then tends to his eye. Dr. Crozier encourages De Guarde to do better. is told that there be no Grog (poor thing) for three days and then sent back to Mr. Leat who gives him first punishment of the day - mucking out what falls under horses (- for a week, but the horses leave sooner Very Happy). Does not notice Mr. Cartwright and Oxley at the time.
Mr Crozier has a cup of coffee, after leaving sickbay.
De Guarde leaves for the hold.
Thompson goes to inspect what truth lies in rumours, after Johnny Stenhouse gleefully reports De Guarde's predicament. When the marine arrives, the boy is happy to see him. Thompson offers to cut down a shirt for the boy. There's no price. There is talk of the fight, and of apologies, Thompson is offered to be taught to write, De Guarde reveals Chase's new nickname for him and lessons on leadership follow.

- Mr. Fletcher is picked to knock on Bolitho's door for middie lessons and does so, Mr. Yates takes notes, Fletcher makes shorter, Kinsella and Chandos just listen. Dr. Crozier comes from the wardroom to water the plants and interupts the lesson.
The middies are scribbling away in silence. Dr. Crozier departs to go organize his stores with Bridgens.

Dr. Crozier arrives in the hold and is surprised to see Thompson there. Dr. Crozier is interested in the horses. The stallion spooks. Thompson warns, Dr. Crozier
moves to pull De Guarde out of the way, the horse rears and kicks out. Dr. Crozier gets kicked in the head. De Guarde gets the horse out of the way, Thompson helps and moves to keep Dr. Crozier safe even with his injury (his head out of the muck). Barrow and Bakewell appear and rush to help.

Dr Maturin is called to help, and Dr. Crozier is brought to the sickbay.

He is visited there by Thompson, de Guarde and Raoul...

Monday, 22th May [Battle of Oporto] - might be best to drop the watch system for the day, since it it is time for battle and it is not used. )

The ships send their boats and landing parties. Oxley is scolded, but it might not be the same Oxley! Oxley is just fidgeting too much. Even Quinn thinks so.
A man is shot, De Guarde takes his oar. Captain's boat reaches the shore, Bolitho's out and calling to the others.
