Re: The Riflemen's sheds
"Sorry, I'll try to!.. I mean not to!" He flushed red, and propped his pack upright, taking a seat beside his rifle. With a frown, he had to rummage into the pack yet again for what he'd been wanting earlier, and once the rag was changed, he sat down again.
" It's not.. well it is in a way. It's.. better here." He looked at Mommsen uncertainly. "Better.. uh. .sergeants, from 'least some of them." He dropped his gaze again and placed his rifle across his knees. He didn't know most names, didn't think he remembered what that man's name was. "Pye.., I'm.. Zachary Pye.. though.. though you probably know that already."

Re: The Riflemen's sheds
"Mommsen - Johann, but Hans, otherwise.... " He looked meditatively up at Fischer and Stierli. "They are not bad men - Stierli is Swiss, but as honest as a man can be, who lives always on a slant."

Re: The Riflemen's sheds
"Zack's me.. fer short." He followed Mommsen's gaze towards the sergeants. Swiss but an honest man? Were there Swiss and dishonest? Maybe. "N' the other sergeant?" He asked studying the barrel of his rifle and then its lock.
"They's good sergeants.. " He murmured, well, more like whispered: "Hakeswill's not." He busied himself around the lock and pan and then looked quickly up at Mommsen. "Well... well you say they's not bad."

Re: The Riflemen's sheds
Beside Mommsen another rifleman had finished unrolling his bedding. He settled down and looked up.
"I'm Hanssen." He jerked a thumb at Mommsen, "ve ust to vork togeder. Before Koalition. You vere in Sgt. Hakesvill's squad?"

Re: The Riflemen's sheds
"You n' Mommsen?" Pye folded his legs under him balancing his rifle still across his legs. He nodded and nudged his pack a bit further to the left, leaving it leaning against the side wall. " Yes. I was. He's not...not a good man." He shook his head pulling his rifle up a bit. It was not many men he would speak of at all, let alone speak ill of.
Re: The Riflemen's sheds
"..His generous.. .gen.. generosity.. 'tis at a price." He shook his head again , his frown deepening. " Nothin' is fer free with' 'im...N' price... is usually bad." He looked at Mommsen and for once seemed more concerned than he tended to be timid.
Re: The Riflemen's sheds
"Eweryding comes at a price." Hanssen did not see what was to be worried about. "Noding is free, not for de likes of us."

Re: The Riflemen's sheds
"Yes but..." He turned to look at Hanssen. " Not like that. It's worse." He tried to think of a good example. One that could possibly mean anything at all to the two men. "..like.. wantin' your lass. " There were rumours, observations but there was never enough solid evidence that could condemn the men. And that was just as well, else he would not be there any more, prancing around on his donkey steed.
"..There's just... a .. normal 'price n'.. one that will give you nothing but trouble. " He had to say it though, remembering that evening. Say it before it was too late.

Re: The Riflemen's sheds
"I meant.. I didn't mean the women." His cheeks were growing read a little at the suggestion. ".. I meant him.. he's got trouble for a price. ..his words.. is.. they'um sweet as honey, but they might..might cost you lots more than what you are willing to pay. " He lowered his rifle and propped it beside his pack.
"He could threaten ter have t' skin of your back, if you don't give 'im what he wants..." He felt uneasy. As much as he wished to warn these riflemen against placing their trust with the sergeant, he just wasn't used to doing something of the sort. Listening was one thing, but talking... "And that's a light thing he could do. He's a..very smart man, is why he's not gotten caught at all..ever. "

Re: The Riflemen's sheds
"No sergeant can have you flogged, less you do somthing real bad, so the officers will back him. Like stealing a man's watch."

Re: The Riflemen's sheds
"Or disobeying orders or being insolent or trying to shoot an officer and getting caught..." Hanssen looked pensieve.

Re: The Riflemen's sheds
"True.. but .. whose word will they listen to if.. if you are accused of somethin'? Even if you didn't do that?" He looked between the two men. "...is bad talk saying 'bout t' officer shot." He added with a frown and dropped the volume of his voice a little.
Re: The Riflemen's sheds
"Why so, Zach Pye? If you try to shoot an officer, you get worse than just flogging, but. You get shot, or hanged. Same for looting. But Harm here ain't talking about shooting our officers - only about what would happen if some daft soldier did. Or shoot at a sergeant, mind."

Re: The Riflemen's sheds
"Is because if some hear it they may think we was thinking it, when none of us was. See, they might think wrong without even us saying that, but if we speak of it... it's easier for them to think wrong." He nodded quickly. "'Though.. though we are just talking it, would be a silly fool thinking to do something like that. A very dead one, yes." He frowned remembering how there had been plans to do away with the sergeant they spoke of and his frown deepened. He hadn't said it to anyone.
"Our sergeants are good though. ..and officers too!"

Re: The Riflemen's sheds
Hanssen blinked and tried to make sense of the torrent of thinking. He was quite surprised, their new messmate didn't seem given to deep thought before.
"You dink... dat you are a silly fool for dinking and dat dinking vill get you killed if anyone hears you dink?"

Re: The Riflemen's sheds
Zachary looked at Hanssen for a moment his accent causing him some trouble to decide what 'dink' meant. But then, he'd started with it and it seemed most possible that he asked whether he thought and then of course all else meant that dink was think.
"..Something like..that." He began holding his hands out as if to explain or perhaps emphesize a point he would make. " I meant..Thinking about those things..that would cause trouble if there was an ear that would open their mouth to a wrong man. And they'd think we had intention, that we were planning it to be done when all we were, were having a talk like we would be talking about them weather or rabbits or..or what our um..hopes are for the food to be the next day." Now could he not have spoken simpler? Quickly, before he'd have confused himself as well.
".. thinking.. it wasn't wanted in the foot regiment, where I was. Captain Vickery wants it though." He did, said so!
"But that's not what I meant.. just thinking with our mouths. Some would think that we are making an intention rather than just a musing..just talk."
He frowned and looked hopeful at Hanssen, perhaps he understood? " And.. if we was talking about it.. and then something happened to a man, and another had heard us talking about it beforehand... they could say it was us. Even if it wasn't!"

Re: The Riflemen's sheds
Mommsen tried to imagine an ear with a mouth, talking to men ... It did not bear thinking about. "That is daft, lad. Unless you are going to go and tell your friends in the 33rd we're planning to kill - who? Who do you think is going to be killed? One of the lieutenants? Captain Vickery?" He considered for a moment, then shook his head. "You may have rats in the 33rd - we don't have them in the Rifles."

Re: The Riflemen's sheds
"No.. I wouldn't!" He looked from Hanssen to Mommsen and wondered if that was the way German names were but then dropped the idea.
".. and I don't think you would do ..something bad.. either." Pye spoke defensively. He frowned as Mommsen seemed to think that he was up to no good or that someone would be at least. "I don't think anybody will... just.." He waved both his hands in frustration. "You don't always talk with Rifles.." And he dropped his gaze.
"..there's.. good people in the 33rd too. You know." He added as an afterthought.

Re: The Riflemen's sheds
"No, we talk with other Germans - and with English soldiers. But we know deserting - and what happens when a company is ... split. As this one was ..." Mommsen thought then looked surprised. "Just six months ago, but, when we had all the desertions. There were floggings and hangings then, lad. So be warned."
Guest- Guest
Re: The Riflemen's sheds
"..Warned, Mommsen?.. why warned?" He looked confused. At the same time perhaps he looked just as disturbed by the mention of hangings and floggings due to desertion. Adjusting his coat he felt the gift of the civilians still there, though warmer. The later, though, had happened rather unintentionally.
Re: The Riflemen's sheds
"We talk of desertion because we know that men have deserted today - you hush us up, and talk as if there is danger. That is foolish talk, Pye. We are good soldiers, and no one gets a flogging here who does not deserve it."
Guest- Guest
Re: The Riflemen's sheds
".. Sorry." The lad lowered his gaze. He hadn't meant to hush anyone up, though warn them, yes. Perhaps he should've been less outspoken, but it was the talk he'd overheard that had him so tight on edge.
"They... people deserted from the rifles?" He asked instead and sounded as surprised as he looked. He knew about the red coats, but not about these.

Re: The Riflemen's sheds
"Ja. Last year. Newcommers to the rifles."
Hannsen was quite sure that his grasp of the English language was not up to discussing last year's events, but he tried.
"They ran avay vhen they vere on guard. To go home."
