18th May - Camp at Avelăs.
The house was meagre and ramshackle, but it would do for the night, and Wellesley saw no logical reason to finding better accomodation. That the house had been given over to him and his Staff was a kind enough gesture from the townsfolk, and he would leave it at that. Hill was in the ajoining stable, and the other generals were dotted about where they could find something resembling shelter.

Re: 18th May - Camp at Avelăs.
George had no intention of sleeping in the cramped space that was given over to him, even if it was a generous offer on behalf of the locals. But for now he could not leave the what for this night was the headquarters.
He'd not had dinner yet and had no intention of dining with anyone else. Now he was in the kitchen, surprisingly spacious for the size of the house. Jacket, sash and sabre thrown on the bench, he had his sleeves rolled up and was chopping onions. Fernao might not be a real servant but he was good at procuring food, even if George had to pay rather steep prices for it.

Thornton was supposed to be bringing Wellesley his supper, which would not be anything particularly special, but thought he might look over the rest of the house before he did so. He had not been through the downstairs rooms and thought to look into the kitchen - perhaps actually to check that Thornton had thought to make something hot. He left the room he would be sharing with Brandon and Murray and descended the rickety stairs.

Re: 18th May - Camp at Avelăs.
George didn't register the sounds on the stairs, as he hummed and put the chopped onions aside, starting to cut up some carrots, humming softly to himself. Cook, eat, wash up, make sure he was not needed anymore and go find a better place to sleep. Sounded good.

Re: 18th May - Camp at Avelăs.
Sir Arthur semi-hopped off the last two treads in an short, abstract moment of humour, and turned to where he thought the kitchen would be located. He was more of less right, and after poking his head into a couple of wrong doors he found what he was looking for. Thornton was nowhere in sight, but there was a small cauldron bubbling away over the fire. He stepped over the threshold to investigate, noticing at the same time Hunter cutting up an onion at the table. Again, they had not parted on the best of terms, but that was by no means a reason to be uncivil.
"Good evening, Hunter," he said as he crossed to the fireplace.

Re: 18th May - Camp at Avelăs.
George looked up at the General, pausing his actions.
'Good evening, sir.'
Deciding it was best to behave as if nothing was wrong and get on with his work, George continued to chop the rather meagre looking pile of vegetables. After a few seconds he goes back to humming a tune under, though very quietly.

Wellesley peered into the cauldron, trying to decide whether what was already in there was somebody else's or something that Hunter was about to add to.
"Is this yours?" he asked, indicating the pot.

'No, sir.' Points to the deep frying pan he has heating on the stove. 'That's mine. I am not sure whose that is.'

"Hope to God whoever it does belong to returns soon," Sir Arthur murmured, wondering where on earth Thornton could have got to. There might be some bread around... ah yes, here was some left on the sideboard. He cut himself a slice, knowing though that he would probably be stuck for butter.
"I would have thought your servant would be doing that," he commented, putting the knife down.

Re: 18th May - Camp at Avelăs.
'He doesn't know how to cook, sir. Besides I don't mind.' Having finished chopping the vegetables, George layed them aside and started to slice up a beef joint into smallish pieces.
Throwing a sideways glance at Wellesley eating the bread, George asked quietly. 'Have you had dinner, sir?'

Wellesley hastily swallowed the mouthful of bread - which was not easy, as it was of a rough sort.
"No, I have not. I did in fact come looking for my cook, but you will not know him to tell me if you have seen him."

'True. I am so sorry to say, I've not seen anyone here for a while now, sir.' Beef now sliced, he wiped his hands on a cloth and added matter of factly. 'This should be ready soon and there is more than enough for two.'

Wellesley waved his hand to dismiss Hunter's suggestion, if it was indeed a suggestion, although his stomach did give a quiet pang at the smell of frying onions and meat.
"I am sure whoever you are sharing with shall enjoy it. Thornton should be back soon from wherever he is - probably seeing what he can procure - if he prefers his hide in one piece."

Re: 18th May - Camp at Avelăs.
'No trouble, sir. Besides, if that is his cauldron over there, I rather think even the rats will refuse to it what's in it now.' George poured some liquid into the frying food and covered the pan to let the whole thing stew. Washing his hands in a bucket of water, he straightened and turned to face the General. 'I can send someone up with a plate.'

Re: 18th May - Camp at Avelăs.
"There is no need," Wellesley said firmly, though not unkindly. "And on second glance I do not believe that is one of his pots, so I shall be saved from what the rats rejected."
He cut himself a second slice of bread, though he had not finished the first, to take with him.

Re: 18th May - Camp at Avelăs.
George resisted the urge to bang his head against a wall.
'Very good, sir.' Checking that his sleeves were rolled up well, he picked up a spoon and uncovering the pan, stirred his stew. For a few moments everything was quiet, and then Fernao came bounding in.
'Hey, George, I've found a perfect spot for you! It's close by, and there's a tree that'll be good protection if it rains!' He stopped short and became rigid as he saw the General. 'Good evening, sir.'

Wellesley raised an eyebrow at the boy, seeing him close for the first time since Hunter had brought him to the column, and deciding he might have a little amusement at his expense.
"So this is your servant that cannot cook?" he said to Hunter, though not taking his eyes from Fernao. "You really should get him up to scratch, Hunter."

Re: 18th May - Camp at Avelăs.
Fernao blushed. 'I've never had to cook before, sir.'
George started looking for a plate, sighing. 'He will learn, sir. He is good at other things. Like negotiating surprisingly high prices.' Fernao blushed more, though if the General was not there, he'd probably stick his tongue out at Hunter.

Wellesley's expression did not change at Fernao's colouring.
"Perhaps. Though I would not place any high hopes on it."

Re: 18th May - Camp at Avelăs.
Fernao pursed his lips. 'If George says I have to learn, I will!' Hunter shrugged and placed a plate and a fork on the table, and started stirring the stew again.
'Are you hungry, Fernao?'
'N-no, the woman I bought the food from fed me.' Answered the boy quietly, wishing himself out of the kitchen.
'That'll explain the price, then. Sit down, I'll make some tea.' And George set about doing just that.

"Oh well, I suppose you know what you are doing," Wellesley said to Hunter with a theatrical sigh, picking up the spare piece of bread to take with him; he would not stay here to eat it. "I hope you enjoy your meal, Hunter."

Re: 18th May - Camp at Avelăs.
'Not sure I do,' muttered George and then added louder. 'Would you like some tea to wash that bread down, sir?' George took the pan off the stove and uncovered it, letting the stew cool down.

That made the General pause. He frowned.
"If there is some already on; but if not then I will leave you to eat in peace."

Re: 18th May - Camp at Avelăs.
'There is, sir. Fernao, why don't you find a cup for the General and for yourself?' The boy started rummaging around the kitchen, relieved at no longer being under the General's scrutiny.

Re: 18th May - Camp at Avelăs.
After a moment's hesitation he sat down stiffly on the wooden bench on the the opposite side of the table to Hunter with a murmured "Thank you". Courtesy now demanded that he stay whilst he drank the tea, which meant that he was stuck with the awkward Portuguese boy. Had he known it would be so he would not have made fun of the lad, but now it just meant it would be more awkward for all three of them - unless someone arrived to call him away to something.
