Re: Avelăs - 18th May, Night.
Hunter frowned at the bits of conversation that he overheard and tugged the cloak firmly around himself, making sure his white breeches and red coat were well covered.

Vickery raised an eyebrow. "Someone was chasing you? Well, if you weren't imagining it, there's nobody there now, and you should be quite safe. If I were you, I'd get back to the baggage if you're worried, though, rather than running off out there."
Re: Avelăs - 18th May, Night.
José Ramon Calderón wrote:In English, he said "The safest place is with the army. There are French patrols out in the night, and others as well. Certainly you should know that?"
[OOC: For the record, the French are, according to Calderon himself, three miles north of the Vouga, and we will not reach the Vouga until tomorrow night. He has not seen any patrols close to Avelăs. And in real life, there are supposedly none south of the Vouga. He is just trying to frighten the young lady, I suppose. There are of course v Lossow's patrols out there ....]

"Yes sir." And if the man left he'd be in the similar predicament to the earlier. He debated on the options, while gazing at the officer. "Could you... oh.. no, what am I thinking. I am sorry. I've taken enough of your time!" She lowered her head again.

Re: Avelăs - 18th May, Night.
It seemed like it was time to act. Or Widmayer would be getting away without answering any of his questions. Pretending to look suitably distraught Hunter strode out from the shadows with a relived: 'Josephina! You are here! Thank God!' He nodded to the rifleman. 'Thank you, Captain, for finding her.'

Vickery looked between the girl and the new arrival, who he recognised as the eccentric young man who had recently joined the General's staff.
"I am sure that he is a perfect gentleman - he is an officer on Wellesley's staff, after all. You should have nothing to fear from him."
Could he extricate himself from this mess? He had his own problems to think about after all.

Re: Avelăs - 18th May, Night.
Josef inwardly cursed. But he couldn't press against being accompanied by Hunter. Wouldn't be right, an offense to the gentleman, a suggestion that it was he who did wrong and it would at last mean he were to jeapordise himself. If Hunter felt his reputation was harmed he could betray him. Already he thought himself lucky that that man chose not to have him arrested.
With a generous smile, a soft nod she spoke. "He is. He is. Sir." She spoke gently, as if so glad he had come and she was now safe, with not one but two officers of proper character. "My apologies again sir, for running so improperly into you! I hope you are well. .. Mr. Hunter." She turned to the captain. "This man protected me, till you came."

'Ah, I am very grateful to you, Captain.' Hunter came closer and offered his hand to the girl. 'Come, Josephina, it is not safe to run around alone in the dark, you might take a fall.'

"I'll be fine. Just remember in future that not all soldiers wear white crossbelts to be seen half a mile away in the dark."
He nodded politely to Hunter. "Good evening, Captain."

Re: Avelăs - 18th May, Night.
She smiled warmly and had small little chuckle: " I shall remember that, sir." She gave him a small bow. She looked at Hunter and though Widmayer felt anything but willing to take that hand, she did, placing her own lightly in Hunter's. She did squeeze it hard and while she held the hand out of sight, did some more to show that irritation.
All smiles on the outside she stepped closer to Hunter, as if finding her new protector. "Good evening to you sir." She added more quietly, more timidly.

Hunter smiled at Vickery fighting hard with himself not to kick Widmayer who was hurting his hand. 'Good evening, Captain.' He turned and tugged Widmayer to follow.

"Good evening, miss," Vickery said, touching his hat before turning to head back to his own camp. What a strange couple that was, he thought, before all thought of them were driven out of his head by his concern for Cotton and his own girl.
Re: Avelăs - 18th May, Night.
Josef walked alongside with Hunter, all hope that he could have used the other captain for an easy escape had been wasted now. The captain was gone, and Hunter was leading him away from the camp. He glared at the man coldly.

Hunter held Widmayer's wrist in a hard grip. 'Now, tell me what the hell you are doing here?'

"...When you unhand me." He answered coldly in a harsh whisper. He pulled at the hand with a sharp jerk, and reached to his dress to help himself walk without stepping on it.

'Start talking, or I'll take to you to the camp women and make sure you'll have to stay with them.'

"And I will scream and accuse you of improper intentions." He answered simply tilting his head, so that he could observe their surroundings. The further they went, the darker it had gotten. The camp looked much more alive, much brighter in comparison.

'If I remember correctly, you were the one to kiss me, and you know how British look upon a man kissing other men, don't you?' George stopped thinking hard how to get rid of Widmayer and not create too many questions.

"You wouldn't reveal my identity. ..It would not look well for you, with an officer and that peasant as witnesses. " He smirked and stopped when the hand holding his, prevented him going further.

'And why are you so sure I would not, Widmayer?' With a free hand George tugged his collar open revealing the congealed blood. 'Did it occur to you I might not care what would look well for me?'

Re: Avelăs - 18th May, Night.
Hunter laughed quietly. 'I like you, you have guts to question me when you are at an obvious disadvantage. Remember, I am an officer here and you are no one. Who do you think they'll rather believe, especially if I give von Dorn to them? Sir Arthur is very perceptive, it took quite a lot of effort for me to cover up for von Dorn.'

"... I would not know what you speak of. .. After all, I am a mere servant." He smiled, ignoring his present type of dress. " Now.. let me rephrase that. You shall answer my questions and you may return to your camp without further ado." He reached up with his other hand so quickly that a waft of air followed his motion, and gripped for Hunter's injured neck.

Re: Avelăs - 18th May, Night.
Hunter winced and staggered backwards. 'Let's see if you are really a girl..'he gasped and brought his knee up, aiming between Widmayer's legs.

The layers of cloth cushioned some of the strike, but not enough. He hissed sharply, his grip tightening on the neck while his legs buckled a little.
He released the neck and shoved against Hunter to have him stumble back and bid himself some time to regain his senses.
