Re: 18th May - Camp at Avelăs.
George poured the tea for the boy and General, then pulled a couple of apples and handed them both along with the mug to Fernao.
'Why don't you go and give our horses a treat, eh?' He too sensed the uneasiness and decided that Fernao was best out of the way. The boy bounded happily out of the kitchen.

Wellesley took up his mug and warmed his hands about it. He would burn his mouth if he tried to drink straight away.

Re: 18th May - Camp at Avelăs.
George sat down opposite the General and studied the cracks in the table for a few moments. 'Do wills need two witnesses, sir?'

Wellesley looked up at that with a frown. It was an odd subject to raise suddenly, but then Hunter was not exactly reknowned for ordinary conversation.
"Ideally yes, but depending on circumstances and whether made out in the correct form I have known them to get through with only one."

'Ah. Never knew that. Never written a will before.'Geoge smiled and sipped the tea carefully.

Re: 18th May - Camp at Avelăs.
Wellesley silently calculated that he had probably written about four by now, clauses and beneficiaries changing with the expansion of his own family and better fortune. It did stand to reason though, that Hunter had not consisdered such a document as a necessity - he was young, unmarried, not even engaged and with no cares but his own to consider.
"I would make one out before too long," he said. "And give it to somebody you will trust to see it to your solicitors, should things go awry for you. That or send it home by the next dispatch. Especially for your mother's sake, as I suppose she does not have much of her own to live on?"
Hunter might be offended to suggest his mother would want for anything if he dies, yet Wellesley had been on the receiving end of a father dying and leaving little but debts. It had not, at all, been pleasant.

Re: 18th May - Camp at Avelăs.
George nodded thoughtfully. 'Thank you, sir. I will do just that.' George shifted on the bench. 'Some people think if they write their wills then they will die soon. I wonder if there is even a grain of truth in that.'

"I should think not, no," Wellesley said flatly. "Unless they convince themselves they will die, and therefore go out of their way to be killed."

Re: 18th May - Camp at Avelăs.
'I dare say you are right, sir. If you go looking for something, one of these days you are bound to find it. Major Winwood went looking for absolution, I hope he's got it now.' George frowned, looking into the cup.

Re: 18th May - Camp at Avelăs.
'Not very well, no. His sister and I are childhood friends, and his father always showed great kindness to me, and managed to get me a commission in the same regiment as Winwood when I just started in the army. We were friends more out of necessity than anything else.'

"But still friends."
And perhaps an understanding with the sister? Though that was Hunter's business, and so Wellesley would not ask.

Re: 18th May - Camp at Avelăs.
George grimaced. 'I suppose so. It's his sister I am worried about now. And his father.'

Ah.
"Then I hope Winwood was sensible to their concerns; but even if he was not, then thankfully the young lady's father is still able to provide for her immediate future."

Re: 18th May - Camp at Avelăs.
'It's not the material side... His father loves him so much, I am afraid the news might kill him. He is not a strong man physically. And Helen loved him despite the fact that she knew of his.. his weakness. Sometimes such love is even stronger.' George sighed. 'Financially, I can always support them, but emotionally I can't.'

Re: 18th May - Camp at Avelăs.
Wellesley's eyes flickered across to look skeptically at the young ADC.
"So," he said carefully. "There is no possibility of your taking the young lady into your protection?"

George stared at the General speechless. 'Marry her? Good Lord, she'll box my ears for even suggesting it!'

Wellesley turned an icy glare on the boy.
"It was merely a question, Hunter," he said coldly.

George stood up and moved away to grab the kettle, turning his back on Wellesley.
'Sorry, sir.'

The General sighed, nursing the mug. It should be cool enough to drink soon.

George shrugged almost imperceptibly.'You have not, sir. It's just that the idea seems a bit, er, incredible.'

'Yes, sorry.' George coughed and turned back to face the General. 'Anyway, I doubt I'll be marrying at all. Considering my chances of survival...' George grinned.

Re: 18th May - Camp at Avelăs.
Wellesley raised a mocking eyebrow.
"Do not be so sure of that, Hunter. Many a young officer has supposed that in his time, and then found to his great surprise that he is in his middling years with a wife at home and a brace of children."

Re: 18th May - Camp at Avelăs.
George's face assumed an expression of mock horror. 'Where were the French last sighted, sir? Suddenly, I have this desire to do something stupidly heroic and die in a blaze of glory.'
