Re: The 60th are up
Newbury nodded, a little jerkily. "Back to the fire," he grunted. The sooner the better.
Re: The 60th are up
"Alright!" He tried to carry as much weight as he could himself, observing, quite worriedly, how Newbury was feeling. "I can, ..I will..." He didn't want to have the man feel as if there was doubt in him, no pride to be hurt! That was the last thing he'd have wanted, but he didn't want the man be in pain for the kettle.
Feeling the small pebbles and stones mix with dirt and stick to the soles of his feet as he walked, he ignored them. He gazed quickly at Newbury again. " Please tell if you.. if you.. need t' pick sumthin' up." Or stop. The later was what he had really meant.

Re: The 60th are up
"I'm all right," Newbury ground out through gritted teeth. They were moving quickly enough, which was good. Even with Pye walking without his shoes!
Re: The 60th are up
Pye nodded, but he was still unconvinced. "We're not far n'more." He offered, with a small smile. A lot more subdued than before. "Then's tea n' then we're near goin' eh?"
Re: The 60th are up
"Aye. Tea." Newbury felt the strain on his side and did his best to ignore it. At least Ben Jacklin was up now, stirring the fire back to life. It wouldn't take long at all to get the water boiling.
Re: The 60th are up
As they arrived back in camp, and were able to set the kettle back down, Pye looked relieved but quite as happy as before. It seemed little of the day could ruin his mood, if anything.
"I'll dart back t' get me shoes now. Yer need any more pebbles like those?" He asked, more worried that his shoes would not be stolen, than that he was walking about without them.

Re: The 60th are up
Newbury was only too glad to set the kettle down near the fire. It was Jacklin's turn to worry over the bloody thing.
"I think that's it," Newbury said, patting his pocket. "Fetch a couple for yourself, I'll get you won't regret it!"

Re: The 60th are up
"I will!" He looked from Joe to Jacklin for a moment then back at the man, just to be sure that he was alright and not going to keel over any moment. With a grin he had added: "Don' drink all t' tea before i'm back!" And chuckled softly as he backed, then turned and run as well as if he had a fine pair of shoes on him. Excited, a bit like a puppy getting ready to explore it's new home.
Re: The 60th are up
The other two Riflemen exchanged grins as Pye dashed off toward the river. He was nothing if not enthusiastic.
"He better hurry," Newbury observed, noting that others were rousing themselves. "Once the lads know there's a kettle boiling, they'll all be wanting a cup!"

Re: The 60th are up
Zachary ran to the river as fast as his feet could carry him and was glad to discover that his pair had dutifully awaited him, no more wet or worse than he had seen them earlier. He waded into the water, so that he would avoid having a sore foot, with something wedged in between it an the sole. While he did so he searched for some nice small pebbles to take with him. One white, a two grayish, and one in some other shade. He tucked them into his pocked and picked one so completely round that he wondered how nature haf mastered it.
Sitting himself on a large rock he worked on first, his left and then his right shoe. There.
Now just a short detour - and at that he'd have certainly to run if he meant to get some of the tea.
++ (if that's allright say, else the little skip shall be erased :3 but tell!!)
He came back out of breath, but with a grin so wide, it could've split his head. He was quick to peer at the kettle, as if afraid that in all due time, there was nought more inside. "Back I am! And me shoes had not run of no place!"

Re: The 60th are up
Most of the company was up and moving around now. Newbury sat near the fire with his cup, both legs stretched out and leaning back on his pack.
"There's a good pair of shoes for you," he said with a grin. "You're just in time, too. Water's ready. First cup for our new lad, Ben!"

Re: The 60th are up
Zachary flushed and bent to his haversack, quickly tucking in the few things he had gotten, and fishing from it his mug.
"No, no. Is ok." He looked at Joe and shuffled on his feet. His cheeks red, his smile bright, by all means there wasn't a need for the sun with all that be set aglow.
" I jus' 'elped Joe 'ere a bit." He smiled, holding his mug as if he'd seen it for the first time.

Re: The 60th are up
The other two Riflemen grinned. "So you did. New lads get the first cup anyway," Jacklin told him.
"Aye." Newbury wiped some dust out of his cup and nodded. "Better hurry then, or the water will start getting cold."

Re: The 60th are up
Zachary nodded moved quickly up to the fire and the kettle with it's water boiling nicely.
"'s anythin' else new lads do firs'?" He asked trying to sound as nonchalant about the question as he could. He was grinning from ear to ear again, eagerly expecting the tea. It wasn't going to be with sugar this time, that he knew, but the memory of it was enough to bring a smile to his face.

Re: The 60th are up
"They might go out scoutin', if Cap'n's in a good humour," Newbury replied. "Probably be with Jacklin here for that."
Jacklin nodded, lifting the kettle to pour some of its steaming contents into Pye's cup. "That's so. Get to hunt rabbits and such-like, out scouting."
Newbury's face flushed but he chuckled, albeit a little brokenly. He wasn't going to live that down ever.

Re: The 60th are up
Pye nodded and looked excited at the prospect of going to do something like that. He blinked startled, not catching what the tease was about and looked inbetween Newbury and Jacklin.
"Oh! So you hunt rabbits on scoutin' then?" He asked, making a mark to remember that when they'd next go! And try his best to bring one back to the lines too.

Re: The 60th are up
He looked at his mug of tea and then up at the gathered collection of men questionably.
Re: The 60th are up
As it was time, they went up to collect the last of their kit and get ready. Pye too went on his face, warmed by the tea he'd enjoyed. He washed the mug, dried it with a cloth and placed it back into his knapsack, making sure none of its contents would rattle as and when he walked.
