The 60th are up

Post  Zachary Pye on Wed Mar 11, 2009 6:31 pm

Pye had woken at about 3 in the morning. Unable to sleep, for he thought that it was moments before they would leave, the youth had gone and scrubbed at his coat again. It was clean now, and not a bit of dirt spread across where he'd lain the other day. He'd shined the buttons next, and that took a while since their number was rather great. Once he had done so he meant to sleep, since it seemed it was not to be morning as soon, but then decided to see to his rifle as well. Though cleaned thoroughly the other day he'd still found some reason to meddle with her. It was still dark when the boy became more convinced it was near the time that they would have to wake. And his canteen had been rechecked as well, though it was as full of water as could be.

He'd noticed the silhuette of some of the riflemen, of which he recognised some.

Re: The 60th are up

Post  Joe Newbury on Wed Mar 11, 2009 6:43 pm

Some day, Newbury thought, he would find it possible to sleep a full night. He had awakened only a couple of hours after laying his head down on his pack, or so it seemed to him. His side was throbbing mercilessly which didn't help. Grumbling to himself, he got up and stumbled over toward the remains of the previous evening's campfire.

There were a couple other lads stirring as well, though for the moment most of the company was still happily asleep. Newbury prodded the faintly-glowing embers with a stick and wondered if he should find some water to boil for tea. Somebody was ambling toward him, the shadow standing out as a darker blot against the slightly-paler night sky.

Re: The 60th are up

Post  Zachary Pye on Wed Mar 11, 2009 6:49 pm

There was someone awake at last! Pye lifted his hand to wave, but kept his mouth shut so that he wouldn't have called out a greeting and awake all the others in one go.

None of the 33rd liked to be stirred awake before their time, and the 60th didn't look as though they were all that different on that account. He took a careful step around one of the sleeping men, and walked smoothly forward with little to no sound.

His shoulders relaxed even more, when he recognised the face as one he knew. "Newbury. 'mornin'!" He whispered when coming close enough that he could speak so quietly and be heard. He was as awake as if it had been middle of the day and already filled with the energy for the new.

"Mornin'," Newbury muttered, half-heartedly returning the greeting. It was the new lad, Pye. It usually was the new lads who were up and wide-eyed awake well before they were supposed to be.

"Bit early to be movin' around, isn't it?"

He blushed and was glad that the darkness concealed the change of colour on his face. He shook his head quickly. "I was jus' makin' right sure that I had all of me things packed n' in order."

He looked at the the remains of a camp fire, glowing very lightly in the dark. "Better early than late!" He grinned, his buttons perhaps needing a bit of 'deshinying' rather than the opposite now.

The lad had a point, Newbury had to admit. Sharp sort, this Pye. Shrugging, Newbury said "S'pose so. Have you seen the kettle? Might's well start it boiling, the lads will be rousing themselves soon enough."

He nodded sharply: "There it is." He had stood and crossed the distance between himself and a larger dark oval shaped object. Every so often it would reflect the little light but mostly it was very much ready to be a tripping stone for someone, as dark as it was. He lifted it up careful not to have it's bottom or sides hit against the ground or any actual stones and smiled, scampering quickly to Newbury.

"'ere it is!"

"Cheers," Newbury said and gazed blankly at the kettle. Of course it had no water in it yet. "Don't s'pose you'd help lug it off to get some water?" He asked as he got to his feet. He couldn't expect Pye to do all the work just for some tea, after all.

"I c'n get t' water sure!" He nodded with a broad smile. He expected that Newbury was still a bit dazed from waking just earlier. He hadn't even considered how the heavy the kettle might be, once it is filled, but only showed his eagerness at a task.

"n' anythin' else ye be needin'." He added honestly. He wasn't a grumbler, that was something already showing at least.

Newbury shook his head. "C'mon, there's no carryin' that by yourself once it's got water in it."

He had to give the lad credit, he was sure keen to please.

"Where ther's a will there's a way!" But he wasn't arguing to share the load, and nodded quickly more embarrassed.

"We go now, yes?" Newbury did indicate it was better to boil the water soon, before the others wake anyhow.

"Aye, we go now." Newbury gestured vaguely and started off, wishing he felt as enthusiastic as young Pye. But it was early yet; the odds were good he'd recover his own spirits soon enough.

Re: The 60th are up

Having woken a lot earlier, the boy had already gone through the phase of the state just after sleep, which showed as much in his step as in his bright and positive demanour.

Newbury did look less cheerful to the youth, which did little to stem his own merriment, though he did debate whether it was better that he says something or that he should keep quiet till the man decided he'd woken enough. He hummed a very subtle and rather quiet tune. Possibly very little remained of it's original melody, but it didn't really matter. He looked up to the sky, then about them.

Re: The 60th are up

Post  Zachary Pye on Mon Mar 16, 2009 5:00 am

As they reached the river (I assume we are filling our kettle there, else it's wherever the source of water should be) Zachary stopped and took down the kettle stretching a little. He'd rid his feet of any garment that kept it dry, safe and warm and waded a little into the river. He paused, observed Newbury for a moment then splashed a handful of water at him.

"Oy, Joe!"

"Aye?" Newbury looked up from where he'd been collecting palm-sized stones from the shallows. The water Pye had flicked at him splashed over his face and jacket front, leaving him blinking in surprise.

"Hey!" His response was, naturally, to scoop up a handful of water and flick it back. Sneaky rogue!

Pye laughed quietly, feeling water splash across his coat and neck, some droplets reaching all the way up to his face. He grinned, the cold water naturally chasing away any last doubts, even the tiniest, that he was awake. He reached down, near stumbling into the flowing water, but caught himself, steadying his footing on some of the round, yet smaller slick pebbles, he had more water sent at Newbury. "What 're ye pickin' up there?" He inquired while he did so. He actually wished to know why.

He spared a moment to splash another handful back after unsuccessfully ducking Pye's return shot, then he held up one of the river-stones he'd been collecting. "Stones," Newbury answered. "Good for skimmin', or bringing along on the march. If they're small enough, you can suck on 'em to keep your mouth from going all dry and dusty."

He tossed one over. "Smooth and flat are the best ones, especially for skimming. Like this." Newbury curled his forefinger around the edge of one stone and flicked his wrist, sending the stone skipping out over the surface of the river. "One... two... ah damn, only two."

"Why'd ye want t' skim?" He turned quiet, for he thought that answer was possibly making him more look rather like a fool. The reason was clear, wasn't it? Silly question! He caught the one tossed, and lifted it up, looking at it.

He grinned running his hand across the dark mess of hair, which was now somewhat wet. With it being run back, some had stood on end, and arched in their own directions as they pleased. His feet were feeling positively cold by now. As he stepped back on the bank, warmth felt rushing to them, while the feeling lingered some. "Here." He held the stone out to Newbury.

" How many d' ye need?" He asked, while taking a hold of the kettle. It needed filling.

"It's something to pass the time," Newbury replied, taking the stone back from Pye. He gave a sharp flick of his wrist and sent the stone skipping out over the river's surface, much like the first one. Three skips that time.

"Not many. Just enough to last until we get wherever we're going. It saves water a little too, you know."

"N' saves yer t' need t' go visit t' bush's. Drinkin' less water n'all!" He grinned, and watched as the stone skipped. Once, twice, three times before it sank into the body of the river never to be seen again.

He bent down, picked a stone. Flat as could be, nice and round too. He lowered the kettle again, and threw the stone. Excited and expectant of a bounce or two he blinked when the stone just sank. He blinked a couple of times startled, then turned quickly. "Too heavy." He uttered with a chuckle.

He then picked the kettle again and lowered it into the water, letting the flow of the river fill it, while it felt the river trying to tug it along.

"They've much t' get their mouths dry, them." He grinned.

"Aye, we will! N' you pick the stones then, please!" He smiled cheerfully and tried to lift the kettle up, now that it was as full as it could get. It was heavy and didn't quite want to budge. With a concentrated look on his face he tried again, a sharp pull and tug till it moved, the water splooshing inside, while the one outside atempted to push the kettle away from it.

Pye put all of his strength in having the kettle from water to ground. He was barefoot, having earlier discarted his footwear for the better of standing the water. He looked quickly at Newbury, hoping the man was alright. " All well Joe?" He asked anxiously.
