6th August 1809, afternoon: Meanwhile ...
[This thread runs parallel to Preparations for Extractions.]
Colonel Beuret was leaning against the canvas of his tent, smoking - not a pasttime he had often time and leisure to indulge in. But on this nice afternoon, he was pretty confident that for once he was on top of all his regimental business, disciplinary matters and paperwork, the British were miles away and seemed lazy and content to stay behind their own lines. Puffing on his delicious cigar, he occassionally called out a comment to DeChagney, who was trying to study some text on tactics.
Captain Sourette came limping by, saluting his superior, but did not disturb him. Instead, he was fully intending to find his two junior officers - for some reasons they had been out of his sight the whole day, and that always made him very wary.

Re: 6th August 1809, afternoon: Meanwhile ...
Josef did not have a lot of problems entering the French camp. Perhaps it was thanks to the knowledge gained when he had come across the last of the 'exploring officers' of the French side, perhaps the reason lay elsewhere.
He passed several groups of soldiers, before he was pointed towards an officer. No longer dressed as a Hussar, he reminded more of an average man. The hair was darker again, a hat covered it, a nondescript coat of dark grey embraced his shoulders, and the rest of the clothing appeared well put together but simple. He did not appear poor, nor rich. He just seemed like someone one could see one moment and forget the next.
With a calm, albeit purposeful stride he approached Colonel Beuret.

Re: 6th August 1809, afternoon: Meanwhile ...
When the colonel saw the man whom he knewn as a french exlporing officer approach him, he straightened with a weary sigh.
"Capitaine. Do you want to talk to me? Or can we offer you a tent to rest for the night?"

"I would like to talk to you. " Josef answered in French and glanced briefly at the other captain. "I have found something for your men to do." He added shortly.

Sourette stopped and came over, the thoughts of Prayon and St.Hilaire forgotten for the moment.
While he greeted the other man, the colonel carefully extinquished his cigar and opened his tent flaps.
"Then let us take this inside. Can I offer you a brandy? What can we do to help our intelligence gathering colleagues?"

"Thank you." Josef ducked into the tent and took the left side of the table. "A glass would quench my thirst." He answered amiably, though his eyes never lost its seriousness.
"It isn't anything grand this time." He said as if apologising for it. "But it might be an amiable exercise for your men, while it should cause a painful sore to the the English dogs." He tilted his head slightly.

Re: 6th August 1809, afternoon: Meanwhile ...
"Then we are of course all for it. Capitaine?"
Sourette nodded and was given a glass as well. After having served his guests, the colonel settled behind his desk. Meanwhile DeChagney had set chairs and brought Josef a pitcher full of water - not as tasty, but better for thirst.
"Then sit down, Monsieur, and tell us what we need to do." The colonel rolled out a map of the current French and British lines.

Re: 6th August 1809, afternoon: Meanwhile ...
After having sat down and accepting the glass, he peered briefly at the map. He leaned closer, took a sip and then placed his brandy on the edge of the table. "The main body of the army is presently stationed in this section, as you probably already know. They will not proceed anywhere today." He began with confidence. He had given them some numbers, observations of the army, that were equally useful, albeit not for the mission.
Then he proceeded to tap on one spot on the map which had some trees, which was a good distance from the main army. "Here." He said simply. " .. you will find cavalry. According to the source there should be about a dozen men, expect a little more. They will be distracted by practice and are not going to be there on a scouting mission. The terrain is favourable to your men. Forest, trees, and uneven grounds. Especially if you can lure them here." He indicated the area on the map, a bit further north.

Re: 6th August 1809, afternoon: Meanwhile ...
Sourette had pulled a sheet of paper towards him and was taking notes.
"That sounds very promising ... but what are they doing there? And ... forgive me, Monsieur, but how certain is it that they will be there? It is rather too close to the British lines to search long for them."
Beuret nodded - he had had the same thoughts. He turned to DeChagney:
"Get Lieutenant Prayon and Sous-Lieutenant St.Hilaire, if you please!"

Re: 6th August 1809, afternoon: Meanwhile ...
"I can assure you they will be there." Josef answered simply. "They have to be." He chose not to elaborate on it just yet, though if the officer would persist, he would consider that option as well.
"They will have a new Cornet with them, an aristocrat. Fresh in the ranks and without much experience how to lead his men efficiently." He did not know Lord Gwydyr well, but he had learned enough about him to know, that he was new in his rank and with that had no fighting experience as the one in command.

Re: 6th August 1809, afternoon: Meanwhile ...
"Ah ... so we would be raiding the classroom so to speak. That Cornet sounds like a good target."
Beuret asked a few questions about the terrain, while Sourette looked up a few things, mainly what other information they had about the troops there.
Meanwhile, young DeChagney was searching for the lieutenants. Knowing that Prayon had a tendency to be found in other people's tents, he first went for St. Hilaire's tent - undoubtedly the nicer of the two anyway.

Re: 6th August 1809, afternoon: Meanwhile ...
A muffled sound answered the inquiring youth after a few moments of silence. Another one followed, somewhat less muffled one which was finally followed by half a sentence confirming his presence in the tent.
A thump was heard, and later a groan, that must have come from the same source. "Give me a moment, what is it?" Saint-Hilaire asked. "What do you need?"

"Sorry, Monsieur! The Colonel wants you to come! And is Lieutenant Prayon with you, monsieur?", DeChagney called out, blushing slightly. He did not really like to disturb anybody, especially one of his heros, but the colonel's word was law, of course.
Re: 6th August 1809, afternoon: Meanwhile ...
"...don't laugh.." Saint-Hilaire did not find his earlier mishap and the making an acquaintance with the floor amusing at all. He had not meant to fall asleep during the day, nor during the dreaded paperwork. All he intended was to take a nap while his friend took a look at what he had done. A few hours later he found himself wakened up by a call of his name.
Without thinking that the lieutenant could answer on his own he answered: "Yes, he is here."

Re: 6th August 1809, afternoon: Meanwhile ...
"Yes, he is!", the man himself answered nearly simultaneously. "Is the Colonel screaming for us to come, begging for us to come, or tiredly sending you off to get us because most likely we have caused whatever problem is preventing him from getting an early dinner?"
DeChagney closed his eyes for a moment, trying to find a good gauge of the colone's state of mind and words that would produce the best results according to it, and then offered:
"Politely but steely asking? He has a guest."

Re: 6th August 1809, afternoon: Meanwhile ...
"Whom did you anger this time?" Saint-Hilaire asked, arching a brow at Prayon before slowly dusting himself off. He still looked ready to curl up back under the sheets and sleep a little longer. He rubbed at his eyes not having even noticed that his friend was hard at work while he was doing the complete opposite.
He yawned and stretched as far as his tent allowed him, wincing slightly. His body was much better, just not yet perfect. "How fast does he want us there?" He asked. He had to tilt his head so that his remaining eye could see most of the things scattered infront of him. He snatched the patch off the pillow and quickly put it back on concealing the empty scarred side where his other eye used to be.

Re: 6th August 1809, afternoon: Meanwhile ...
All hard work had of course mysteriously vanished the moment DeChagney made himself known and Etienne woke up. Laughing, Bastien snatched his jacket with one hand and Etienne's collar with the other and more or less dragged both out of the tent.
"Nothing, to my knowledge. He won't take that slight adventure yesterday that seriously, won't he?"
DeChagney, who had been privileged to Captain Sourette's bitter complaint about the unscheduled excursion, even though it had produced a nice dinner, was less sure there, but kept his opinion to himself and instead answered dutifully:
"As soon as possible? Right now and instantly?"

Re: 6th August 1809, afternoon: Meanwhile ...
Once outside Saint-Hilaire began to adjust his shirt again to make himself more presentable and less crumpled. He did manage to set his hair in a less ruffled up fashion and then reached out to snatch his coat from Bastien.
"Our sacrifice of yesterday brought good to the people!" Saint-Hilaire complained goodnaturedly though a little more withdrawn than his 'loud' friend. "He surely could not punish us for that!....well....are we to make the greatest haste then, lieutenant Prayon?"

Re: 6th August 1809, afternoon: Meanwhile ...
"Certainly not!", Prayon protested, although he was quite quickly walking to the commander's tent. "We would look guilty! We go there at a perfectly dignified pace!"
He payed attention to the little dance DeChagney mimicked, though, and straightened his collar. The colonel's young aid hovered at Etienne's side, not knowing whether an offer of assistance to Etinne would be appropriate or taken as an insult.

Re: 6th August 1809, afternoon: Meanwhile ...
"If that is your dignified pace, I fear to need to catch up with you at a faster one!" Saint-Hilaire smiled while trying his best to keep up with the other and walk in stride, side by side with him. His legs still felt stiff and it amplified a limp a bit. He of course tried at best to conceal it and the discomfort the strain to the leg caused. It was better, certainly. It was improving day by day, which he was quite proud of.
Once he heard his footsteps, while unable to see him, he turned around to look at DeChagney.
He did lately try to walk in such way that the others were on his seeing side. "What?" He asked, trying to read the youth's face. This action alone however meant that he was not keeping his eye on the path they were taking, which in turn lead to the next near accident. His foot met a patch of uneven terrain that had a distinct dip. He stumbled, his leg stomping hard into the ground, trying to find its balance again while his whole body came forward.

Re: 6th August 1809, afternoon: Meanwhile ...
DeChagney, who had already been in position, managed to sling his arms around Etienne, stopping his fall long enough for Bastien to spin around and steady them before Etienne's weight could knock the boy down as well.
"Etienne?", he inquired worriedly at the same time as DeChagney's anxious "Monsieur?".

Re: 6th August 1809, afternoon: Meanwhile ...
"I'm fine!" the sous-lieutenant's voice was a bit harsher than he intended to, but judging by the colour of his cheeks he felt rather embarrassed and ashamed of his earlier mishap. He straightened and then murmured a quiet apology and a thank you.
"Damn pothole." He muttered as ways of explanation and also because he was angry with it.

Bastien considered for a moment, then put Etienne's arm firmly around DeChagney's shoulder.
"There! And now I run and you follow at a reasonable pace. That way the Colonel sees that we can be quick and sensible! That is something like an order!"

"I don't need to be babied.. I am fine,..sir." Saint-Hilaire protested, though he did not shift his arm from the youth, if for no other reason than to respect the order as it was given.
He looked no happier doing it though."...Hurry ahead then..." He relented. "We'll be there right after you."

Re: 6th August 1809, afternoon: Meanwhile ...
"Right!"
Bastien turned and sprinted as fast as his legs could carry him, then stopped sharply before the Colonel's tent and walked in with his usual swagger, only slightly out of breath.
"Here as ordered, Colonel. Saint-Hilaire will be here in half a minute."
He looked with unabashed curiosity at Josef and the maps spread over the colonel's desk.
DeChagney menawhile tried to find the most dignified way to help Etienne. In the end, he had to be content with the arrangement Bastien had made.
"Sorry, Monsieur", he whispered. "But I think he meant it as an order, so ... is that okay? You really can tell me."
