Ines had been ready quite early and chose to wear one of the dresses that she had asked to be made in England and which had been delivered the other day. The colour was perfect for the evening while not too bold. She had been assisted by a maid to have her hair done. She had decided that she would assist her friend then in achieving a presentable look as well.

Estefania seemed to favour gold embroidery that was simple, but pleasant to the eye. She had picked a mantle of sorts, or a pelisse which she was told would be suffice for an opera type of wear. It was long and reached as far as her dress did. It was a bold red with gold embroidery along the collar, the front along the edge and with details around the sleeves and upper arms. It folded open at the top, with the embroidery mirroring that of the rest of the garment, there as well.

Beneath this garment which promised to keep her warm, until they were at the theatre, she wore a simple, light gown of finer material, as seemed appropriate for the evening. She had been told so by her friend who in turn had council thanks to another of Burlingame's relatives. The pale pearly hue of her dress was embroidered as well, with flowers that climbed up the dress in a band diagonal to the ground, coming from the left of her dress all the way to her right side. the sleeves had been edged with a smaller ring of detail, just as well as the hem of her dress.

She thought it quite silly when a female relative of Burlingame's insisted that she should wear a few ostrich feathers in her hair. She was told that it was what fit with the attire, that it was right for that year too and the occasion and that it would not do, should she not adorn her hair in some way. After some initial arguments she had given up and given in. She did however stubbornly insist on taking no other coat than the one she had picked, though she was open, should a blue one be brought forth and that she could borrow.

When she was ready, she and Ines still had some more time to drink a cup of tea before they were to board the carriage with the family that had invited them to the event of that evening.

The carriage arrived very punctually, with Lady Gleve and her youngest daughter inside. A liveried groom jumped down and ran up to the door to knock while another one helped the coachman to keep the horses standing - although the coach horses the countess usually used had been a special gift from her husband, at her special request, and were as calm and safe as a matching pair of Fresians could be.

When the door was opened, the groom gave the butler a friendly smile and announced:

"Lady Gleve's coach for Senora Lopes and Senora Manrique!"

Estefania stood from her seat at almost the same time as her friend. She placed the cup back onto it's small ornamented plate and turned to the door. "We are coming." She answered.

Lady Ines as first led the way, then gave some final instructions, which had Estefania pass her and be the first through the door. There she waited though for the few moments that it took her friend to follow.

They both walked to the carriage then, warm in their coats and elegant in their gait. Estefania was at that time first to greet the arrivals, smiling politely at them though she could not help but cast a longer glance at the horses, which she did seem to admire.

The groom folded up the stairs and closed the door while Lady Isabelle introduced the two ladies to her mother. The countess was arrayed in a round dress of finest gold tissue over a satin underdress in a becoming shade of brown, and trimmed with a broad frill of finest Mechlin lace and a white applique stomacher with gold latticework, continued in a straight line down to the hem. Her hair, although shot with grey as luxurious and troublesome as her daughters, was tamed in a gold net caul and a veil of corresponding lace, and a large shawl of heavy white silk with a graceful golden border kept her warm. Her jewellry was simple and elegant, but the diamonds in it were perfectly matched and priceless - another gift of her husband, although this one he had decided on completely by himself.

Her daughter wore a round robe in a delicate shade of blue, with a demi-traine and short sleeves of lace and gold beading, and rather military frog closures of colden cord at the front. She had matched a white pellerine with swansdown lining and golden cord and tassel, and bound her hair up with matching golden cord and lace. Her usual pearl necklace and matching drops on her ears and long white evening gloves of french kid with a delicate gold border completed her elegant outfit - apart of course from such necessary items as slippers (crimson), fan (white with gold trimming and ivory sticks), reticule (satin, just a shade darker than her robe, and with similar golden details) and so on.

As soon as the greetings were done with and the coach well on its way, Lady Gleve turned to Estefania and inquired politely:

"Senhora, are you by any chance a relative of Donna Leonor de Oyenhausen? She is a born de Almeida, if I recall correctly."

Estefania looked surprised as a familiar name was mentioned moments from their first departing from their rented house. More so was she surprised, as she had not heard from her or of her aunt, since the war had caused many of the communications to be torn and as letters could hardly reach the people they were intended for, even if they had been sent to the Peninsula.

She had not known where she remained, nor even if she was well or whether she had been caught in the whirlwind of events. This was the reason why it took her a moment to regroup and also another, as she wondered whether answering the question in the positive would be a good or a bad thing. When she finally spoke, she first nodded and smiled. "She is my aunt, or was...well, might still be. I have had the misfortune of loosing contact with her." She said quite softly. "A very dear aunt I can only speak most fondly of. Do you know her?" She asked more eagerly and hopefully, for indeed this woman might have been essential in her learning many things, including the languages that she could now confirm, knowing.

The countess looked slightly surprised herself.

"Yes, certainly, senhora, she is rather well-known for her literary saloons here. She is not in London at the moment but gone to Bath, I believe, but I would imagine she will return before the end of the month - if not sooner; the papers have quite successfully announced your visit here."

"They have. I apologise for the inconvenience they might have caused you by my name." She said politely and honestly, as she did not seem particularly inclined towards relishing in any sort of scandal, real or imaginary, nor to pull with her other innocent souls.

She smiled to brighten up though, her smile appearing rather radiant because of the news that her aunt was in fact still alive and even in the country! She repeated the name again, and asked if it was indeed this woman that the countess meant and once she was certain said: "I do hope she arrives soon. It has been so long!"

"We are neither engaged, madame, nor has he proposed to me not here, nor in Spain or Portugal. I am a respectable lady just as he is a respectable gentleman, so you need not fear that indecencies have been committed. I do not know what other rumours you refer to, but at the very least I can assure you that there is nothing there to soil either his name, or mine." She of course had been aware of some of the rumours, have tried to ignore them at best and fight the onslaught on her own. It was not easy of course.

Her expression was serious though she did not allow for more of her emotions to show. She would defend her own honour however if need be. "You may inquire and ask anything you would like to know, and I shall answer.." She concluded.

Lady Gleve held up a calming hand.

"I did not meant to say that there would be any cause to doubt your word. Forgive me. If there is no basis, the rumours will die down quick enough - especially once your aunt arrives and that ridiculous notion that you have come to England without any family or protection there are refuted. Were you aquinted with your aunt's husband? Even if he has passed away some time ago, unfortunately, he still has a name here."

"Well....." While if one sought to find basis in fact that they've actually done something, or have even married, she could confirm it there not being any, it was more complicated however, should she involve emotions and feelings. She hesitated and was silent, her gaze averting briefly to study a particularly dull, but suddenly interesting ornament then briefly the world that she could see through the side window.

She nodded. "I knew her husband and have had the privilege of living with them while in Vienna, if for a short time." She answered softly though looked saddened at his passing. "It is no lie that I came, believing not to have any family here any longer, but yet that story changes and improves. " She smiled politely.

Estefania smiled at Isabella and nodded "Oh yes! It was my mother who decided to send me to see my aunt in Vienna, she and her husband were residing there at the time. Mother thought it essential for my education." Her smile broadened.

"And it was so interesting, and different, nothing like Portugal, or Spain or even England. It was grand and we attended many concerts and events. She was and I should not be wrong to suppose that she still is, a very big fan of music! I have had the privilege to see Beethoven there and Haydn." She barely kept herself from grinning at that. "I was much younger at the time and barely knew who they were, without being told, but I still remember it as if it was yesterday." It was quite clear from her voice how fondly she remembered those memories when she was void of worry and when life had been so much simpler.

"That niece was me." Estefania straightened a little rather proud, though equally surprised at having been remembered. "I did follow her to London as at the time was .." She had not been told at the time, but later did learn of it. "The war of ...oranges?..well Portugal was not stable and they thought me safer to travel with Aunt and stay in London than to return home." She nodded lightly.

"It was very educational for me. I was able to learn and practice more English and experience a little of the society here as well. How do you remember her.. me though? Did we meet then?" She was young and knew that there were so many faces to remember!

The countess smiled. It was funny how you sometimes met people again after a long time, and in completely different settings.

"Yes, I believe we actually did, though you will hardly remember me. Your aunt held a dinner party ... in honour of Lord FitzGerald's appointment as Ambassador to Portugal, if I recall correctly. After dinner, you and the other schoolroom children came down to join us for a short while in the drawing room."

"Oh, yes. I do remember the event though." Estefania smiled. "It was the one where we performed a little play. Each of us sung their piece. We've prepared for it for so long. We even made our costumes.." She hesitated. "Or helped the elder children, while they made them for us." She remembered having congratulated Lord FitzGerald in Portuguese, and after that during their play, she sung in English. It was almost like a sort of display of how much she had learned in her time in England. She was such a proud child then.

"Oh no. I have not yet. The rumours have been unkind enough to me so far as to, as it seems, prevent me from being able to attend any event of greater importance." She smiled. "Though, I hope that they might cease soon." She had held up admirably and although she had made impossible for any of the so called journalists from having an audience with her, it did not prevent further, more malicious rumours from spreading.

"I will be honoured to meet her, should the opportunity arise." She smiled softly and studied Lady Bella, as if trying to recall if there had been an opportunity in which she might have, as a young child, seen the other girl. She tried also to guess how old the other girl might have been at the time of her visit. Had they met at one point? Perhaps when in the country, when the season was not in full swing? It was much harder to compare the face with one from her youth, as age changed children a great deal.

"They certainly will as soon as your aunt appears", Lady Gleve. "The whole affair is so ridiculous that it might amuse the public for a short while, but once something new happens, it will be forgotten in an instant."

Bella smiled back, but she had been too young still to remember much of the various dinners and similar entertainments her parents had held and she had been allowed to briefly join before being herded off to bed. The things she remembered most vividly from that year was the excited bustle surrounding her sister's wedding, and later the devastation of her brother's death.

"Let us hope so." Estefania smiled inclining her head. She paused and then, as if a thought had just popped in her head she said. "...I may be completely mistaken... but during the time in London in 1802 did Lady Isabella venture on several occasions with her nanny into the park? ..oh, silly question." She looked a little embarrassed but then continued at least:"...and, I remember there was much talk of the wedding of..." She tried to remember the name. "Of your sister." She still searched her memory for it, but the word escaped her.

As images returned to her so did the memory of meeting a handsome, most charming, young man. The little lady would have struggled to forget his face even if she had seen plenty of others in her time in England.

"Elizabeth - now Lady Thine, of course ... ah, we are here, my dears!" The countess made sure she had her shawl and ridicule, just as an older copy of Estefania's young man approached to help the ladies out of the coach.

The groom bustled for a moment until the door was open and the steps down, then Lord Torrington, for once in impeccable civilian dress, bowed to the ladies and extended a hand to assist them.

"Good evening, Mother. Senhora de Almeida, a pleasure to see you again!"

While he gripped his mother's arm quite firmly, and ddin't let go before she was safely on the steps of the theater, he merely offered his support to Estefania, leaving it up to her to dictate the extent and duration of it. The last member of the company he did not so much support as gently restrain from hopping down all alone.

"Hullo, Bella - sparkling as always."
